After a train ride from London, we checked in and were immediately escorted to our rooms. It is a gorgeous, well appointed, old white cottage with seemingly unending English charm. The room included a queen bed with comfortable linens, en suite bath with a standup shower, in-room toiletries, coffee/tea service, and incredible views of the town of Windermere. Overall, it was very well appointed with modern features throughout. For dinner, we enjoyed the restaurant's evening special of sirloin and chips. We ordered it medium rare and it came cooked to medium. Prior to that we broke from English tradition, and ordered a very nice fruit & cheese plate for an appetizer. At the end of the meal, their sticky toffee pudding was quite rich and among the top four I've had in my life. They have a very lovely outdoor setting, complete with comfortable tables, that allow for glorious views of Windermere, both the town and the body of water. Angel Inn also has a guest lounge area, with comfortable sofas and chairs that allow you to warm yourself by their wood burning fireplace. It is within easy walking distance to the post office, co-op, Laundrette, and mere. It is a 1.6 mile walk, all downhill, from the Windermere train station. As an anniversary treat my partner took me here for afternoon tea over the weekend. We also wanted to have a look at the legendary Lake House which is a mile from the hotel next to its own private lake, with private spa and grounds. We booked in at 5pm for afternoon tea .. A little later than I wanted but it's seems they just serve late afternoon. When we arrived it seems we drew upto a private residence rather than a hotel... which made it more appealing! We were seated quickly in the gorgeous lounge area (if it hadn't have been raining we would have been out on the gorgeous terrace) the whole room oozed class. The coffee table was laid out ready for us and we decided to have cold drinks to start with our savouries. Not a single member of staff went by without seeing if we were ok and needed anything.. attentive isn't the word! So we set up our tour of the lake house after we finished our afternoon tea very quickly! The savouries were frankly delicious. . Sausage and choritzo rolls, egg mayo, roast beef (cooked medium rare.. as it should be) and horseradish, smoked salmon and watercress and ham & wholegrain mustard sandwiches. .. then the most perfect part.. A pot of light, creamy salmon mousse with roasted brioche. Being a savouries person this was the best part and wish there was more ... but as it's afternoon tea we needed to leave space for the cakes. The cakes arrived beautifully presented and obviously made by a master of baking! Toffee and cream profiterole, chocolate slice with many layer of creamy mousse and chocolate ganache.. Victoria slice.. sponge, cream and jam in perfect layers, raspberry cheesecake.. perfectly light and creamy.. The scone was to die for... With all the trimmings. The choice of teas was lacking many fruit teas but only Earl Grey and English Breakfast in traditional teas.. After we finished we drove down to the lake house for a look round... it was classic, beautiful and entirely an elegant way to host a small wedding or special party. I feel this hotel is a little overlooked being just out of the tourist area... but it is a gem. Our room was wonderfully clean (and I'm a stickler on cleanliness!) and the bed was so comfortable, especially after a long drive. It was such a comfortable and clean place to lay our heads for the evening. The hotel has a restaurant that I would also recommend. Breakfast was incredible - one of the first hotel breakfasts where I haven't had to douse in pepper haha. Well seasoned and well cooked, high quality ingredients. Jonathan is a wonderful chef. Plenty of wardrobe space, good sized room with chair and tables (plus tea and coffee) and little balcony, accessible from patio doors. Not really used in October, but it would be handy on a summer's night. As part of the wedding, we ate in Room One-o-One, the hotel's upmarket restaurant. The food was excellent, with a crab and lobster starter, guinea fowl main and panacotta pud. All dishes were cooked to perfection and packed full of flavour - surprising for a hotel restaurant as often dishes can be a bit 'meh' and over priced. The service from staff was friendly and helpful. Breakfast is in the main dining room - a huge selection of cereals, continential breakfast items and a full English you can help yourself to. I was pleased to find they offered gluten free bread toasted :) I was booked into the Burnside as part of the wedding but I'm currently investigating it for a return visit as I would like to explore Bowness and the Lakes further. I did notice that some people were registered as having KGB deals for £49.50 for a room and breakfast so that would be a great option. There are lovely grounds too - looking out over the Lakes and there is also a leisure centre. Sadly I did not have the chance to try the pool and the jacuzzi but other guests used the facilities so worth taking swimming gear with you. The hotel has two parts, one old and one new. The older portion of the house is decidedly more charming--unsurprisingly!--yet the newer side is equally warm and comfortable, if not as lovely. Enjoy beautiful views out on to manicured gardens, the countryside, and the lake from your room and from all the main gathering spaces in the old house. Two well-stocked bars will serve up a tasty Hendricks and cucumber, or just about anything else you might fancy, along with crunchy bar snacks. But don't fill up--dinner is their pièce de résistance. Menus are dispersed and orders are placed over drinks and canapés, which might include mini pesto cream tarts and mackerel rillettes on brown bread, in front of a raging fire. One evening, our table's chosen starters included seared scallops and a goat's cheese and red onion flan, followed by an asparagus and cauliflower soup. Mains included pan roasted salmon, seared corn fed duck breast, and a lamb rump steak cooked to perfection, all rounded out with tasty accompaniments including roasted carrots, potatoes dauphinoise, inter alia. The fresh bread basket and chilled butter was overly tempting. Dessert was between perennial favorites such as tiramisu and a decadent chocolate brownie, to local delights such as sticky toffee pudding and a cheese platter. I opted for the latter, and was thoroughly impressed with the variety--and the quantity! The meal is topped off with french press pots of coffee and homemade chocolates. The beds are spacious and comfortable and the grounds offer short walks (nearby) and the location affords long walks, hikes, and treks in the vicinity. And then, there's always Beatrix Potter's house... Charming, indeed. And I highly recommend this comfortable, cozy English countryside getaway.
