CELC is what, I believe, every parent would want for their child: a bully free and truly challenging (individully titrated, another miracle for a school) learning environment. Melinda Alcosser and Maria Mortali are the two exceptional forces that lead the learning process at CELC: for kids in grades 5th through 8th. Why CELC for my family? Coming from a fantastic public school in Shaker Heights, Ohio, (Onaway elementary school) we moved to the shoreline of Connecticut into a school system with high ratings. The bullying was so unexpected and frightening. Worse, my child was "viewed" as the problem. We moved him to a private school (in the same community), and found the same dynamic continued to occur in this private school. He continued to be bullied and he fell through the cracks with regard to academics. My husband and I had a difficult time getting him to do his homework, and as a result, teachers disregarded his abilities and did not challenge him. We moved him to CELC in March of 2012. The second week he was there, on the way home he said, unprompted, "I love being there. It is like something was missing in my heart before, and now I am complete." Since moving to Connecticut two years ago, my son is finally happy. He loves going out the door in the morning to CELC, and he comes home at night and completes his homework!!!!! It is only believable, because I have seen it happen for my son. At CELC, he is not only accepted for who he is, he is valued. He is challenged. He is doing his homework. He is finally happy. That makes me and my husband happy. Connecticut Experiential Learning Center takes my breath away. A truly miraculous school program on the Connecticut shoreline.

The amazing, dedicated teachers have created a nurturing environment, where the students really get to know each other. As a result, they have created a unique space where kids feel comfortable to learn, grow, and to be curious. Students are advanced and challenged according to their abilities and interests in a small class environment where they stay engaged and connected. The school provides wonderful breadth of activities beyond the core academics, including twice a week field trips, a Kingian nonviolence class, music, theater, cooking, community service, student run work shops, and other enriching experiences. Our son loves going to CELC, and CELC has inspired him to learn and to be his best self there.

She had gone through a few tutors within the city however her son's practice scores were still hovering around the same average score. Since I am closer in age to her son, and well versed with many different testing centers- considering I've taken the SAT, ACT and the DAT (for dental school) as well as NBDE I,II (both for dental)- she asked me to help her find one that could help her son's learning style out. After some research and conversations with her son, I realized he needed more one on one tutoring rather than the online and classroom modules other companies utilize. With some good google searching I found tutor me NY and they were really personable and straight forward. The personal one on one touch was what my cousin's son needed and his scores greatly improved. Tutoring can be a tricky thing to find the right fit since its not a "one size fits all" type of service. Luckily for us, money was not a main factor in deciding the best tutor, however, we were more concerned with finding one that was really experienced. We hired multiple companies that were supposedly "highly rated" and charged an arm and a leg but found the the tutor did not fit what we were looking for. Low and behold, a friend recommended Tutor Me NY and after seeing there great reviews online, I immediately decided to give them a call. Tutor Me Ny was fantastic from the get go. From explaining things, to not pressuring me, and even making sure that the tutor was to our standards - the whole experience was perfect. The tutor we were matched with was a Columbia graduate and she was able to work with both children back to back. She even met with one of them at a coffee shop in Manhattan which was extremely convenient. It has since been a few months and my nieces have both received their scores back and they did extremely well. In fact they are now working with another tutor for college apps and statistics. Very quickly, on their site, I was able to watch a selection of tutors pitch their skills. One tutor in particular stood out for me; I called Becky who runs Successful Students and within a few days my son was having private classes with this tutor. Needless to say the tutor was excellent - my son worked with him online weekly for 5 months and established some excellent writing habits and skills. Beckie and her team know their stuff (executive functioning, math, Ela, science etc) but they also know how to earn a child's trust by working on weaknesses and leveraging strengths.
