Splashes Cafe is found in the Colwyn Bay Leisure Centre at Eirias Park. It's seperated from the…read moreswimming pool by a glass wall so as you're eating your lunch you can watch the swimmers splashing about next door, hence the name. Although it's called 'Splashes Cafe' it's really more of a canteen. All the tables and chairs are bolted to the floor and all the cutlery and crockery are plastic. There's no table service, you order your food and wait for your number to be called after which you're expected to go back to the counter to collect it. In terms of food the menu is not what you might expect from a leisure centre. You can get a baked potato but basically it's sausage, egg and chips, burgers, hot dogs, beans on toast and the like. There are some 'pasta pot' things which look to be the only food item known to man with a lower nutritional value that a pot noodle. The pricing structure also a bit random. You can get a round of toast for 35p, but beans on toast will cost £1.70. You do get two rounds of toast with your beans but still it means you're paying £1.00 for a helping of beans. However if you buy chips (£1.30) and add beans you'll pay £1.90, i.e. your beans will 'only' cost 60p. So if you're a toast eater bear in mind you'll be subsidising the chip munchers. In fact the pricing structure encourages over-eating. Chips will cost £1.30 but add one 'topping' and you'll pay £1.90. Toppings include sausage, egg, beans, cheese, chicken nuggets and coleslaw. However add a second topping and you'll only pay £2.20 and add a third and you'll only pay £2.50. So the more toppings you add the cheaper they get! One quibble about the plastic knives and forks is that they are a bit flimsy and the knives in particular tend to snap in half if you try to cut food with them. As their sole purpose is to cut food this makes them unfit for purpose. By all means have plastic cutlery but make them rigid enough to cut through a piece of toast. All in all it's a cheap and cheerful place for a quick breakfast or spot of lunch but you won't want to hang around too long on the uncomfortable, plastic seats.

The restaurant attracts a lot of Families who come to use the Brewster Bear Play area and it also serves great value kids meals. Brewsters often run promotions on their meals e.g. Two main courses for £9 so you can always get a good bargain at the Afon Conwy. However the food itself is standard pub grub, mostly frozen then microwaved or fried - so its not the place if your after a Gourmet meal. However its recommended just for the fact that is Good Value, Child Friendly and offers a quick service - you kknow what to expect from Brewsters and Afon Conwy is no different.

It's located just off junction 19 of the A55, next to a Premier Inn and across the road from a petrol station but otherwise in the middle of nowhere so it's the sort of place you have to make the effort to visit. Being a Brewster's the food is obviously mass produced and re-heated to order. Nice as it is to have freshly prepared meals there are a couple of advantages to this. For one thing you know exactly what you're going to get, you don't have to worry that the chef is having an off day or a day off. It also means that the food is served very quickly. It's maybe not the best place for a romantic dinner but if you're after speed and convenience it's a better option than the MacDonalds one junction down the A55. On a recent visit my wife and I opted to take advantage of the two for a tenner option, which includes a varied range of meals so there should be something to appeal to everyone. I ordered a Chicken Tikka Masala and the missus went for the Chicken and Bacon salad. The generous portion of chicken tikka was very tasty to be fair and came with rice, naan bread, a couple of poppadoms and a pot of mango chutney. The salad was huge with plenty of chicken and bacon and went down a treat. There was a 2 for 2 quid pudding option but we passed on that as the main meals were filling enough. We've also recently finally got around to trying one of the evening all you can eat buffets. There's a different theme each weekday including Chinese, Pie Night, Tex-Mex, Indian and the one we tried which was Fish and Chip night. You help yourself to whatever you want from a selection of chips, fish, fishcakes, battered sausage, chicken, meat pie, peas, mushy peas, curry sauce and gravy and once you've got your plate you go back for more as many times as you can. The quality was surprisingly good for the price, the chicken in particular had plenty of meat on it, so we're now looking forward to trying a different night to see how that compares. On all our visits the service has been friendly and efficient and we've always had someone ask if we enjoyed our meals which isn't something you always get in other places.

Set on the picturesque Rhos-on-Sea promenade, Nino's has been a fixture for God knows how long. Always packed on sunny summer's days, it has been very popular with locals and visitors alike. I can vividly remember enjoying a cappuccino in Nino's when a was little more than five years old. It's part of the scenery. The decor has not changed in twenty years, but this gives it some sort of retro charm, for me at least. Unfortunately, standards have fallen spectacularly. I recently returned home and went for a meal at Nino's with family. It was appalling. Really bad. So bad that I felt it necessary to post a review. So bad that I really begrudged paying for it. Not only was the place dirty - flies (both living and dead) all over the place, the food was also terrible. The menu clearly stated that the Pizza was made from 'home made dough', and for £10.99, I expected it to be. What I received was a heated up budget frozen pizza with a few olives thrown on top. There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that this was a store-bought frozen pizza. For eleven pounds. Disgraceful. Others in my party had fish and chips, which is better value, but their reports weren't good. Frozen fish, canned mushy peas, the usual story. It's a real shame because I always held Nino's in high regard and have recommended it to others many times. Personally, I'll never be back. I have never paid so much for something of such poor quality. A definite contender for the 'worst restaurant experience' I have ever had. A real shame indeed.

When you first walk in you find yourself in a fairly classy gift shop. They sell jewellery, picture frames, toiletries etc which appear to be decent quality although I'm not really an expert on such things so don't take my word on this. Turn a sharp left however and you find yourself in the tearoom. It's quite old fashioned which fits in well in Rhos-on-Sea. The tables and chairs are old and wooden and whilst not particularly comfortable they add to the authenticity. Seating along one side of the room is provided by what looks very much like an old church pew. The menu is very much traditional 'British'. There was a specials menu including cod, scampi, gammon etc all served with chips. In addition there are a selction of sandwiches, baked potatos, salads and toasties. There's also traditional afternoon tea if you're in the mood. The prices seemed a little expensive to me. Most of the baked potatos were £5.50 and two hours before going there I'd bought a pack of four in Morrisons for 50p. Admittedly the Morrison's ones weren't cooked or filled. However I suspect that the prices are probably in line with other similar establishments in the area. I opted for the all day breakfast comprising two sausages, two rashers of bacon, egg, beans, tomato and toast which if I remember correctly cost £4.75. The portions were generous and the sausage and bacon looked like they had come from the butchers rather than the supermarket freezer. All in all it was very good quality and I had no complaints. Service was efficient and quick although the tearoom wasn't very busy on the day. So if you find yourself in Rhos-on-Sea and you're feeling a bit peckish you could do worse than searching out La Reina.
