The Lord Clifden has to be one of my favourite places in Birmingham. It's located a short walk out of the city centre in the Jewellery Quarter area boasting a large well designed outdoor space as well as two fantastic bar areas. For my lunch today I had the 5oz sirloin steak, this was accompanied by some seriously special hand cut chips, watercress and peppercorn sauce. The whole meal was packed full of flavour and fantastically presented. The service was also excellent....I really can't fault it! The Lord Clifden on weekends is a firm favourite amongst my friendship group. If you haven't been before you can take advantage of the varied selection of beers and ales, as well as enjoying the local DJ's playing a mix of classic funk, soul and disco. My advice is to get down early on weekends to get in for free. There is usually a small charge for admission on both Fridays and Saturday nights starting around 10pm.

The best way for me to describe the food at Lord Clifden is pornographic. I've been wanting to go here since sampling their burger at the Who's Got Beef challenge and we finally made it. Seth S. and I chose to walk here from UoB - I'd recommend going here after fasting or a good workout - or at least don't wear your tight pants. Thank me later. I knew Lord Clifden had something special at the challenge when I tasted their chargrilled juicy burger patty. When we visited in-person, I chose the D-Face burger which is topped with caramelized onions, melted cheddar, salad and mayo, and comes with a side of fries. This burger was sheer American Route 66 perfection. HUGE. Tasty. Gooey. Crunchy. The perfect balance of flavors. Sorry Texas, you ain't got nothin' on Clifden. The menu boasts a variety of burgers, steaks, sandwiches, and finger foods. The descriptions are simple and don't sound nearly as impressive as the food tastes. Seth ordered the Fungy sandwich. I got to try a bite and was crazy impressed. Garlic aioli and perfectly cooked mushrooms adorn a beautifully toasted bread beckoning the French countryside. Simple, balanced and flavorful. Another highlight was the cider. The bar has a neat pump that can freeze the cider if you want. It's just like a lovely adult slush drink. Lord Clifden has a variety of seating options. Toward the front there is a bar seating area, in the middle is a lounge, and in the back is a lovely beer garden with TVs for watching sport. We chose to sit in the lounge. The seating was lower and outfitted with moveable stuffed stools and a big loungy booth. It was very comfortable. The mood is sexy and dark, with lighting that feels just right on the eyes. I could waste a lot of hours in here if not careful.

It is not the biggest of pubs I have visited but I have to say it is one of the best. I don't have any criticisms of this pub and I have no doubts I will be back here. There has always been a friendly and family feel about this place whenever I have been here and the staff are excellent with their customers. The Lord Clifden is an excellent place for you and your mates to have a pint at. This pub is a great place to be particularly when it is a warm day. The beer garden is pretty spacious and there is a designated smoking area. You can get free wireless internet access and there is also a function room that can be hired. Regular music and quiz nights take place and if you are looking for a pub with a terrific atmosphere, this is one of them. I wouldn't hesitate in coming back and next time I visit The Lord Clifden, I will try the food on offer. You can have a look at the menus on the pub website to see what dishes are served here. Definitely recommend you give this place a try.

top notch haloumi veggie burger at jewellery quarter gastro-pub!

Great little find on the periphery of the jewellery quarter. Their food wins many plaudits as does the ale, and the prices are reasonable. Plenty of vegetarian options on the gastro pub style menu. My haloumi burger in breadcrumbs on a nicely toasted brioche bun was very tasty. We ate outside in the big beer garden well away from the football fans watching the game on the tvs which were dotted about. Good quality pub food in a laid back traditional pub with a friendly vibe - whats not to love? Recommended!

Perfect start of an awesome night. I got a huge chicken burger which was one of the best that i have ever ate. The location is a traditional pub with a big open air smoking area at the backyard. I would definitely return to this places. It is now one of my favorite places which i would like to show me german friends. Chickenburger...awesome!!!

The Lord Clifden is part of a small chain in Birmingham, the Urban Art Bars (UAB). It's sister pub is the Red Lion (previously reviewed) and both are situated in the Jewellery Quarter. That's really where the similarities between the two pubs end. Whereas the Red Lion seems to cater for more of a "pub crowd" (an older, discerning type who want a relative level of peace while enjoying a craft ale), the Lord Clifden definitely gives off more of a party vibe. Between it's extensive garden (complete with table football, a postbox, graffiti and ping pong), it's vibrant street art on the walls (LOTS of Banksy and punky prints) and it's varied selection of DJ's... it's a great place to have a drink late into the evening. The Clifden serves a good selection of interesting ales (I tried the Rotten Ale last time, named for it's connections with Johnny Rotten) as well as some Ciders, wines and a pretty good selection of Spirits. In the summer they do Slushy Cider and it's fabulous to sit in the garden and enjoy a cold pint whilst taking in the Sunshine. They sometimes do a BBQ too! As expected for a high design pub, a pint aint cheap. You're looking at around £3.50 upwards for a craft ale, but it always seems to be well kept and fresh. They have a food menu too, but this can be quite hit and miss. I have only had great meals here, but have eaten with friends who have been disappointed with their food. Unlike many of the other venues in the area, it shows a good range of sports. If you're a football or rugby fan, you can catch many of the bigger games on the big screens around the whole establishment (including the garden). It's a great pub, well worth a try if you haven't been before. It loses a star for price and inconsistency of food, but it does get an additional one for the large and fabulous garden!

Frozen cider in prep for Sunday!

I loved the Clifden for years - it was the pub where me and my mates would meet to pick over there goings on of the night before. The food is great usually although service can be sporadic on a hot summers day - Which brings to another selling point. The massive beer garden and outside bar ( bbq too in the summer). It has a range of music on over the weekend so something for everyone but does charge £5 in on a Saturday night so I tend to avoid it then as I shouldn't have to pay to go toy local & probably as it has got so popular it doesn't attract the best crowd on a weekend in my opinion. If you go on a sunny bank holiday weekend be prepared for the busyness! On a week night though you can't get much better!

Finding a bar with a good beer garden close to the centre of Birmingham isn't the easiest of tasks but the Clifden really fills the void. (I'm aware of the fact that it's currently hammering it down here and that the season for beer gardens has passed for this year! But this is one of the best in the city) In all honesty the Clifden may be a little 'hipster-y' for some, and in places it is. The beer garden does like a bit like Banksy vomited on it but there is more than ample seating, TV's outside for those of a more.. sporty persuasion and more often than not a bbq going during the summer months. I haven't even touched on the food and drink selections at the Clifden. A regularly changing cask menu is coupled with a delicious culinary offerings (the Sunday lunch is epic!), and if cask ale isn't your thing there's a damn good selection of bottled beers, wines, soft drinks and hot beverages for your delectation. So, when the weather picks up (or even before then for a lovely, cosy drink inside) head over to the Clifden. You won't regret it.

Another excellent Monday night! After a busy bank holiday weekend we decided we needed some good food. We initially went for steak but the sight of the roast dinners were enough to tempt us. I had a mix of beef and lamb and everything was just perfect. The best Sunday roast I have eaten out. Again the music and the vibe was really good. I really enjoy this place and will be returning again and again to sample more of the delicious menu and soak in the good atmosphere.

    Happy steak day!

The Craven Arms was built for Holder's Brewery at the dawn of the twentieth century. Departing from the Victorian red brick and terra cotta style that is so prevalent in Brum, the exterior of The Craven Arms is adorned with lovely blue and gold tiles, making it one of the more colourful pubs in city centre. Inside, the tile and brick switches over to a traditional 'old man' pub style with wood, carpeting, and dark wood chairs and stools. From the outside, the pub belies the tight quarters inside. The pub makes great use of the space though, and the intimacy and cosiness creates a true neighbourhood feel. Once you grab a stool, be prepared for one of the best craft brew and real ale selections in the entirety of greater Birmingham. Black Country Ales is tied to the Craven Arms, and aside from their traditional golden, bitter, and brown, you'll find more real ales, some IPAs hopped to the max, and fun beers like a red hot chili beer. Hard to find bottled beers and cider in the fridge complete the impressive selections. The pub has no kitchen, but they serve up cheese baps (for £1) and allow you to bring in any outside food and will even provide a fork and knife for you. For the serious beer drinker, you can join their beer club and earn your way up toward the '100 club', tasting all kinds of brews along the way. If you are up for an old pub experience with the latest and greatest in new craft beers, the Crave Arms will suit you well.

My friend is entirely obsessed with the Peaky Blinders series, so requested that we checked here out on our Birmingham jaunt. I didn't google or yelp it beforehand, and how I wish that I had! I had imagined a carefully researched themed bar, era appropriate, speak easy vibe, and maybe something special occurring with the final series imminent. However, what we got was cheaply dressed mannequins, t-shirts and waistcoats, oddly placed graffiti, a very run of the mill bar and the weirdest karaoke selection I think I've ever experienced (good on the woman singing Nightwish- 13 year old me would have been very happy, not perfectly executed though, shall we say). It all felt a bit *too* local, which I expect is amazing if you are, mind, and it seemed weird to me that the "speakeasy" behind the big bookshelf was closed on a Saturday night on a bank holiday weekend? It entirely feel like they've simply dibsed a name and tried to cash in on the popularity of the series, with the minimum effort that they could manage. I had themed parties as a skint student that I reckon had a greater budget and craft than this. It's a real shame as it almost stops an amazing one coming along and doing a better job. It's a laugh, but nothing more unfortunately.

I therefore had to give this place a try before I left - especially being a fan of The Peaky Blinders. I had passed by this place a few times when it was known as Confessions and it never really enticed me in. So, this time I was more hopeful! Stepping through the door your attention is drawn to the friendly looking bar tender dressed in (roughly) Peaky Blinder style hat. The next thing I noticed was a mannequin also dressed (roughly) Peaky Blinder style. Now for some the mannequins could be considered bizarre, I however am from a small town which considers one of its prime tourist attractions to be a shop decorated with very bizarre looking mannequins! There are a few more of these mannequins type things around the place adorned with a flat cap, and accompanied by instructions not to touch and that offenders will be instructed to leave! The bar area itself is one average size room, it was relatively clean and populated by older gentlemen of varying mental capacity. There was at least one sat alone having a full conversation with himself. The bar itself had nothing special to offer, just the usual bulk items, Carling, Strongbow (original and forest fruits) and Guinness. A simple selection of bottles were stocked in the fridges, the best of which seemed to be bottles of Magners. As for the "Peaky Blinder" theme. Well, I was pretty disappointed. This clearly just an attempt to cash in on the show, with very little actual connection. A few cap clad mannequin's and few pictures on the wall which seem to be screen grabs from the show. So much more could be made of the theme which would no doubt attract loyal fans. This place just doesn't cut it as a themed venue. Its an OK pub but that's about all it is.

The ambiance and drink were 5 stars. The gnocchi had good subtle potato flavor and the texture was a standard slightly chewy pasta that I've come to expect outside of Italy and the Italian enclaves of New York. I'm always searching for more melt in your mouth pillowy gnocchi, but this was a solid representation of standard gnocchi. The gnocchi was served in a creamy tomato vodka sauce and topped with fresh local mozzarella and a garnish of greens. The portion was very filling and well worth the price. The tempranillo was wonderfully full-bodied with a lovely balance of fruitiness and spice. I like that Old Joint Stock offers wine in small and large glasses or by the bottle. I chose the large glass, which is plenty to accompany dinner and dessert, if you somehow have room for dessert. The dessert menu looked amazing - I'm definitely going back to try something. Old Joint Stock offers a luxurious old-world charm that just beckons you to come spend an evening enjoying good food and drink. Upon entry, the place was almost empty. Perfect. I nabbed a table, turned the laptop on, connected to the WiFi (as with most places in Birmingham, the Cloud Wifi is strong in this venue) and grabbed myself a drink from the bar. As it was a Friday afternoon, I thought a nice glass of white wine would be in order. I was very pleased to note that a glass of house wine (which was perfectly tolerable) was a bargainous £2.75! With drink in hand and equipment ready to go, I settled in to my chat. The Old Fox is a theatre bar which is situated over the road from the Hippodrome, round the corner from Glee Club and just on the gateway to the Gay Quarter. It's lovely from the outside! A cheery old man boozer which looks really well kept and cared for. The inside is worn, but comfortable. It's not a place to go for a posh night out, but I would definitely recommend it if a group of you are looking for somewhere to chat and relax for a few hours. Throughout the course of my swift visit (I was in there for about an hour) more people came in, but it didn't get busy. They also had some music on in the background, but this wasn't offensive or intrusive. The staff were perfectly friendly and helpful and the venue has the usual sort of "pub" paraphernalia inside. I spotted a dart board, a gambling machine and a basic menu of food. I didn't get to investigate the place in too much detail, but it's somewhere I would revisit if I was in this neck of the woods and wanted to grab a decent pint (and avoid the nearby Wetherspoons).

We thought to ourselves, 'don't be put off, that will probably be one of us later'. So we trotted in and were quite surprised by how busy it was. It took us ages to get served but we kept ourselves amused by talking to a relatively old man who only had one shoe on! We only realised this afterwards and we didn't want to ask him where the other one was in case of another 30 minute drunken chat so it still remains one of lifes mysteries until this day. Overall, it's quite a small pub that gets packed on a Saturday night but I think that's because the drinks are cheap considering its location and there's plenty of characters to keep you amused even if you do have to wait for a long time to get served.

I wanted to find something that looked authentic at a decent price. After taking a bit of a walk I found The Sun On The Hill. it was quiet inside, not too many people, but the young lady at the bar was welcoming with a smile and helpful. I grabbed the table and after looking at the menu, I went to the bar and placed my order. Being new to Birmingham, i've quickly figured out that many of these places our pretty much self serve, and pay as you go. I'm okay with that once I figured it out. The choices were Beef, Chicken, Pork, or Vegan, and I chose the pork. The serving came with vegetables a pudding, and covered in a proper gravey. it was cooked well and there was more than enough. I did enjoy my first english sunday supper and would recommend this place for someone looking for a good meal at a reasonable price.

I only have fond memories about previous visits to "The Sun On The Hill", but it's just not one of…read morethose places I visit very regularly. During a catch up over cocktails with Elite Adam S last night, he mentioned that this venue had received a bit of a makeover recently. As it was just over the road from Bodega (the chosen Cocktail venue for the evening), we decided to pay the cheque and wander on over to check it out. First thing to note, it's not that different. You're not going to wander in and be astonished in a "changing rooms" stylee, but it does look smarter. I love the renewed signage on the door and the little design touches in this smart City pub. It's been a while since I had visited, but I did notice that they seemed to have more cask ale on offer than I remembered them having. I went for a pint of "New World" whilst Adam had a glass of the ole faithful "Mad Goose" (with Purity being a fairly local brewery an' all). I do love the mixed seating here. We sat on a table with high stools, but there were comfy booths in the main bar, a sofa area near the door, bar stools and further tables up a level on the mezzanine. It would make a great venue as a "pre-club" stop, a drink with friends, a casual date or even just a swift afterwork pint! Now, I didn't try the food here but I noticed the menu has been updated (as per The Sun At The Station - http://www.yelp.co.uk/biz/the-station-birmingham). They are also offering a "Half Price Food On Mondays" offer until the end of October, so I will try and pop in and catch that to give a more round review of the venue. This is a smart city pub, with a bit of a "younger" and "funkier" feel to it than many of it's nearest neighbours. It plays a good selection of music and has a welcoming and friendly vibe. If you haven't popped in before, make a date to grab a pint with a friend and check out this cool venue.
