I spent a week at The Lord Nelson Hotel in November 2014 and found it to be very good value for money. It's a budget hotel to be sure, so don't expect **** furniture or a large room. I had an en suite single which was just about 7-8m2. The bathroom was fully functional, clean and and surprisingly modern. There was no actual closet for the clothes, just a rack that you could hang your stuff on. Since I only slept there and spent the entire days in Liverpool and other towns within reach (Manchester, Southport and Chester), the slightly weathered furniture did not phase me one bit.
In England, when evaluating real estate, they say: Location, location, location! And this is the greatest plus of The Lord Nelson Hotel in my book: It's very conveniently located just a stone's throw - and I do mean a stone's throw - from Liverpool Lime Street, the city's major train station (Liverpool Central is just a regional/subway station!). A three minute walk, max. Which comes in handy if you want to explore places outside of Liverpool and return late at night.
It is also very close (less than 10 minutes) from the so-called Museum Quarter with its wonderful Walker Art Gallery, which I visited three times during my stay. The shopping area is also about 10 minutes away, and it's about 20 minutes to Albert Dock/harbour), the major tourist area with the Tate Liverpool, the Maritime Museum, The Museum of Liverpool and the Museum of Slavery (all within 5 minutes of each other).
The more than adequate continental breakfast buffet was included in the modest room price, and tea & coffee were served by the young and friendly staff. The buffet included three kinds of jam, cheese, cold cuts (usually 1 kind), white and brown toast, yoghurts, fresh fruit, orange and apple juice and various crisps. I was pleasantly surprised. The large breakfast area (which is also the bar area) could get busy around 8-30 a.m.
The bar, which I frequented a couple of times when I did not arrive at the hotel too late, offered a large range of alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, including a few ales and lagers.
All in all I was very happy with this hotel. Don't expect too much in terms of room style, and you should be better than okay. And again: It's location, location, location - on a budget. read more
