Very drab and outdated, can hear anyone above you walking on the creaky hardwood floors, some of the double beds are just smaller ones pushed together (and not very comfortable), no bottled water in the rooms, no phone to call the front desk, no hair dryer (thank god I wasn't staying long, as I wouldn't have been able to wash my hair the entire stay). The Shankly Hotel is named after Liverpool legend Bill Shankly. As I have absolutely no football knowledge whatsoever this part of the experience was a bit lost on me. However, for those in the know, from the first step into the foyer there are tributes to him and memorabilia of his life and career everywhere - even in the floor! We stayed here in a group of 14 as part of a hen weekend. The apartment at the top of the hotel was already booked for the weekend so we had 3 rooms for the weekend. These were pure luxury. There was a massive leather couch that turned into a bed, a generous sized wardrobe, huge comfortable beds with a beautiful tan leather trimmed headboard, a kitchenette and a jacuzzi bath. YES! A JACUZZI BATH! This was worth the stay alone and I definitely spent way too long in there on Saturday morning. It was full of the latest technology too including a bluetooth connectable soundbar that played in each area of the room, an XBox on request and a large flat screen TV equipped with lots of movies and radio stations. Everything was luxurious and I was in love with our surroundings. Even the rooms were adorned with Shankly memorabilia, including some bathroom wisdom in the form of Shankly quotes and a story about him on the roof from many people who had encountered him in their lives. Even if you're not much of a football fan you can appreciate the tasteful tributes to him at every turn. A massive plus for me was that the rooms were practically soundproof! When I decided to go to bed earlier than the rest of most of the hen party on the Saturday night I couldn't hear a peep as soon as I shut the door. Great news for their neighbouring room too I'll bet! On arrival we were given vouchers for drinks at the bar, which made our first round super cheap! There was also breakfast in the morning with plenty of hot and cold options, served until 11am. I never go for breakfast because I'm never up in time so this was such a nice change from the norm and I got to enjoy two days of delicious cooked breakfasts in the Bastion restaurant on the bottom floor of the hotel. You're only a five minute walk from Liverpool One and a ten minute walk from Concert Square. You're also right next to some shops, a Five Guys and local takeaways, and if you can't be bothered going out you can order JustEat/Dominos and the hotel reception will call you when it arrives. Heaven. It is definitely any Liverpool fan's dream hotel here. On the Friday night a Liverpool legend was at the restaurant while we were getting drinks and he had the FA Cup with him - which I'm told is a pretty big deal. However, even if you're not a Liverpool fan this hotel is a dream. It is modern, stylish, comfortable and all of the staff were amazing during our stay. There are so many little touches that made our weekend extra special and I'd definitely consider staying here on my next visit to Liverpool. Such a beautiful hotel in the heart of the city!

The bed was firm and comfortable (though we should have asked for extra pillows), and the bathroom is cool and clean, with a large bath and a shower 'wet room'. The toiletries are really good. You have a smart TV with lots of channels, and wifi is free (though we didn't test it, having a good 4G signal on our phones). Room service was poor during our stay, and we would only comment that cold pizza that looks less than 'luxury' is not worth £23. We sent it back, and the room service manager was very professional and apologetic. Breakfast is good, with a selection of cooked or Continental goodies, often made fresh rather than served in hot containers. I had waffles with banana, with melted Nutella served in a small copper pan. My partner had bacon and egg English muffins, which he enjoyed despite the eggs being overcooked. We washed it down with cappuccinos and fruit juice. Other than the poor experience with room service, and almost being charged for two breakfasts instead of one at checkout, it's an exceptional hotel with friendly staff and nice places to hang out, such as the brasseries and the 2nd floor hallway, which includes a yellow submarine suspended from the ceiling! Two down only 8 to go :-s but not to worry, an adventure awaits......I am particularly looking forward to visiting the one in Oxford which used to be a .....wait for it....prison... yes folks your rooms used to be someone's cage. I'll have to pass judgement once I have had the pleasure. The other thing I can remember is how much I enjoyed showering here. It truly feels like you are bathing in the rain and the inhouse shower gels are just so refreshing. It is the attention to detail which makes the experience so fulfilling. I couldn't sum it up much better than that really. Fulfilling.... The funny thing about hotels is that you actually don't spend that much time there. It is testament to a good hotel therefore if you do remember little things, it shows that the short experience was worthy enough to leave some good memories..... My stay at the Mal pool was as good as it gets.... Apart from perhaps Hilton I would say this is arguably the best hotel in Liverpool, so break the penny piggy bank and stay here instead of a budget B&B and you will not regret...

The highest of ceilings. Behind the front desk is their lounge/bar area, and beyond that is a full restaurant. It never seemed to have anyone in it during our time there however. We took the elevator to our assigned room on the second floor. Hallways are quite dark, and not so welcoming. In the room itself, everything just seemed to be cheaply done. The bathroom vanity was simply a table, the shower tiles were wobbly and not secured, there were cracks in the ceiling/wall, and even the paint and caulking looked sloppy. The room also lacked any good lightening- both my husband and I pointed out how wildly dark one side of the room was despite all of the lights being on. Also, when I went to open the curtains, the whole thing (rod included) literally fell off of the wall. All in all, the room was clean, but again just felt so cheap. Here me out, I realize these could sound like petty things to complain about, but when you're paying extra in hopes of a higher-end stay, it's a real bummer when it turns out being "meh." Location wise however- fantastic! Right in the heart of Liverpool and walkable to truly everything. Shops, restaurants, the city center, and the docks. Also the staff were all very sweet. Most of the staff (including the manager) was very friendly, warm and polite. We would definitely seriously consider this hotel for a future visit to Liverpool. So really the point is - why only 3 stars? Well there are a couple of reasons that could be addressed and bring them up to 5 stars in a heartbeat: 1. The woman at the front desk when we checked in desperately needs a little hospitality training. 2. They need to give more attention to maintenance. The room was magnificent but the taps on one of the two sinks was in need of serious tightening and (worse) the lovely walk-in shower only delivered ice-cold water because a part had failed preventing hot water mixing - and the part had to be put on order 3. The website says parking is £12 per night - well this is misleading. Actually it is £12 because you have to drive to a nearby NCP garage where it costs £24.99 for 24 hours and they give you a "discount" ticket which lowers it to £12. It is somewhat awkward if it's raining or if it involves there in rush hour (the walk is only 3 minutes or so but with on way streets and traffic lights the drive can be much longer). The worst part is that you get no in and out privileges and you only get one discount per night so if you need to use the car then it could become pricey 4. The breakfast restaurant was disappointing (use Moose coffee around the corner). Luckily our suite had a bathtub also (with hot water) but since we only ever shower this was not our first choice... Hoping to return soon, it is a lovely hotel!

If you look at TripAdviser reviews you will see many other people with same complaint. It's not a 4star hotel, it's a cheap wedding venue. Our 4 year anniversary was ruined by this. The offer of compensation days later when we'd returned home was a one night stay there on a Sunday which we found offensive as we would 1) never stay there again, 2) have to pay £173.80 for train tickets to get there, and 3) use annual leave from work to take a Monday off work to use the shoddy offer. We deserved a full refund for our night of no sleep (you book a hotel to sleep!!) DO NOT STAY HERE THEY TAKE YOUR MONEY DESPITE KNOWING YOU WON'T SLEEP

By all means, it is not a 5*lodging but a hotel which caters for all types of tourists and hosts special events during evenings. The silver service of dining will certainly spoil you and make you feel special. The function rooms are immaculate too. In terms of the location, it is situated right opposite Lime Street station making it convenient for travellers. Receptionists will put you at ease when you check in and ensure you are treated well during your stay.

Now that is not a criticism, in fact it's a compliment. You see you can always rely on them having vacancies and not costing a bomb which any half decent hotel inevitably does. It is also always crawling with European tourist from my experience which isn't a bad thing at all. I actually like the simplicity of it all actually. It's almost like when you go shopping at Tesco's or Asda's and you have not much cash on you and you go for the tesco branded bread loaf rather than warburtons. Heck it tastes the same but comes in a more bland package. Every once in a while you gotta eat the Tesco bread don't you. Similar case scenario here. On an away trip or night out with the lads this is best option probably if you've been stuck with the responsibility of sorting out accommodation. Holiday Inn we salute you for providing us with this no frills option indeed.
