In fact, you couldn't walk along the beaches of Long Island or the Jersey Shore without a symphony of tinny transistor radios blowing out their 9-volt speakers bringing you the top 40 pop hits of the day in glorious monaural sound in unrelenting, repetitive rotation. This wasn't Aqualung, Stairway, Baba O'Riley or Smoke on the Water, WABC force fed you a steady diet of Cat Stevens, James Taylor, Jim Croce, American Pie, John Denver, Harry Chapin and Jagger's Angie that gave you an earworm for a week. Like it or not, this was the soundtrack of my summers listening to wallflower Janis Ian constantly bemoaning her 'At Seventeen' dating dilemmas and Helen Reddy letting a Ms. Magazined, Playtex burning world know she was indeed all woman. After hearing her roar about it 20x a day for an entire summer, I believed her and surrendered meekly to her mob-friendly bleatings. The beauty here were the hyperkinetic, DJ's (Harry Harrison, Cousin Brucie and Dan Ingram) who would talk over half of each song. We didn't know any better? I thought mangling the songs made them better... besides they were our "friends" and who was I to argue if some greybeard DJ wanted to step all over Janis Ian's acne-inspired lamentations. They had 50,000 watts of clear channel power behind them and dammit, they were going to use it. Now of course we're all tucked into our own musical cocoons where a gold or platinum recording is measured in tens of streams and critical mass, shared experience music is about as relevant as a Mood Ring. So be it. I'll always have a fondness for WABC, Musicradiob'77. Soundtracks don't come much better. Five very easy stars. BTW... many thanks for Marianne W's inspiration on this.

I am offering this review after religiously listening to WABC radio since the mid-1960's. I've…read morelowered my normal 5-star rating mainly owing to the departure of Curtis Sliwa and WABC's reputation for "Always Broadcasting Curtis." While I applaud John Catsimitide's decision to at long last dump on-air disasters Anthony "Carlos Danger" Weiner and Anthony "America Was Never That Great" Cuomo, I remain disappointed to frequently hear traitorous and inarticulate Michael Cohen still broadcasting. Similarly annoying are Rita Cosby''s self-congratulatory, screechy and grating "ha, ha, ha's" after she says something that she thinks is funny. But I'm compelled to award two stars to WABC-AM radio, one each for Dominic Carter and Greg Kelly.
