All up, the food is worth returning for, but if you want great tea or coffee, you will have to travel further towards the city than croydon.

Being surrounded by furniture stores, advertising companies and creative agencies however keeps this great little café on its toes all week. But unlike other more well known cafes in the vicinity, Amsterdam Café tends to keep a more down key (read: affordable) character which is appreciated completely. One of my favourite places for breakfast when I used to work on Church Street, Amsterdam café keeps its meals interesting and low priced - which is far form what other places in this mixed use area can claim. Try the Mushroom, goats cheese an thyme omelette - it's a delicious rendition for the senses. Or if you have a sweet tooth (like I do) you must have the French toast - generous portions of thick cut bread which are deceivingly light and satisfying. Maple syrup comes on the side so you can choose how sweet you want your breakfast to be.

It is also cheaper than the cafes on nearby Carlisle St, and without the crowds. And on Saturday or Sunday morning, sometimes that's all you want - some scrambled eggs on toast, the weekend paper, sitting outside under the shade of the trees with some sunlight streaming in. Remember to order at the counter and tell the ladies/gents behind the counter where you are sitting.

Part of a cluster of laid back venues away from the Port Vegas end of the burb, it feels like something of an oasis - being set across the road from the Pepper tree lined park at the 109 North Port tram stop. The building has a certain historic cham, once a corner store, possibly a grocer - the buildings in this area are some of Melbourne's oldest, dating back to the mid 1800's. Station Street's old iron verandah arches over the pavement tables and hanging baskets swing cheerfully above them. Across the road in Raglan Street, a local institution, the Railway Hotel, serves up beer, red wine, steak and horse racing to a ruddy cheeked blokey clientele. But at Station Street Trading Co. the menu is small and yet more interesting. I've seen wardrobes bigger than their kitchen, so you'll understand the direction they've taken with the food. Brunch tempters, sandwiches, salads, grills and homemade baked items rule. The little touches like bacon rippled along skewers and grilled tomatoes still on their truss make the food easy on the eye. It's tasty and uncomplicated. The staff are friendly and chatty. So it's easy to while away the time here staring across at the park, especially when the sun's out. A heads up that it doesn't seat that many people indoors, so if you're there on a Wintry weekend and can't get a seat, just use your Yelp Monocle and wander down to Little Rose, New Lots, Pure Pie or My Sister Says. All very fine establishments close by with a certain North Port synergy.

It's a fairly large cafe located on the shopping strip just off Blackburn road with ample outdoor seating. My friend and I were seated on a very wobbly table outside (which also sent a glass of water into my lap after the table tipped towards me) which was rectified by moving. Also a wobbly table, this was fixed by stacking a pile of napkins underneath. Coffee orders were taken promptly but food took ages. I ordered myself the Mediterranean eggs Benedict and my friend had the mushrooms on toast. It was about 45 minutes before the food came out and it was such a disappointment. My food was more tasteless than plain rice. It was supposed to be poached eggs, sitting atop shredded pork shoulder on Turkish bread, topped with jalapeños, coriander and hollondaise sauce. The whole thing was bland and soggy. Hollondaise was too runny and not well seasoned. Eggs overcooked. My pork shoulder was so watery it tasted like boiled pork and sitting atop the Turkish bread just meant the whole thing was soggy. The only flavour I could actually taste was the coriander. My friend who had the mushrooms was also quite unimpressed with her meal. I've added an extra star here because the coffee and ambiance are nice, but I'd recommended just sticking to the coffee and people watching.

If you live around the area, you will know this location is tough and the spot has undergone several changes throughout the past few years and never quite made it. With Glen Waverley becoming busier, it is natural for the overflow of people to move towards Pinewood and with cafe's becoming "the thing" in Melbourne...South Society has taken the bull by the horns. Newly renovated with simple open plan full - wooden tables, dessert display and pot plants... With an all day menu from 7am, I have tried: Pumpkin linguini, red velvet pancakes (strawberries and chocolate drizzle) and the big breakfast (with a cheesy potato croquette). The food is on the pricier side however is in line with other hip places. The chai latte is always well brewed with actual tea and served a brown platter. The coffee always looks pretty and friends say it is an average coffee. I come here as there is always parking, the food is the same price as Glen Waverley Cafes and on par for quality. The food ranges from muesli - bacon and eggs - smashed ago - burger - pasta which caters for a variety of people I enjoy catching up with. Will be back for the convenice however the most recent visit I was a bit disappointed with the floors and tables not being well kept and food order taking some time.

We were there for breakfast but there is everything from buying a loaf of bread and toasting it yourself, pastries to the purchase of three different sized picnic baskets. And if the salads on display are anything to go by I'll certainly be back to order one and stroll through their gardens. They are currently expanding the gardens. But there is plenty to do! From lawn bowls, children's play areas, picnic area and meet bubble and squeak the residents of the pig sty. I couldn't recommend the Piggery Cafe enough. I will certainly be back. The meals took a fair stint to arrive, but we weren't there for fast food and the location is incredibly beautiful so it was a nice chance to stop and breathe. Speaking of breathing - we were seated outside, and every time the wind gusted our way there was a waft of .... I don't know what. Sewage? Pigs? Something on the septic side of the scent spectrum (I know, pure poetry). It wasn't pleasant so I removed a star for that.
