We were in town recently and decided to check out R Place after it changed ownership (formerly…read moreChances R). Upon arrival, we were greeted by a security guard at the door--no issues there. A woman seated near the entrance informed us there was a $10 cover charge for males. My friend and I paid, while our wives were allowed in for free. Not even ten feet inside, the same security guard stopped us and said the cover was actually $20 per person. I pushed back on this, and he ultimately let it go. Once inside, we realized we were the only customers in the entire bar. The music was extremely loud--so loud that we couldn't hear each other speak--but we ordered drinks anyway. My wife later approached the security guard to ask about the inconsistent cover charge, given that the bar was completely empty. When my friend's wife went over to join her, another security guard intervened and told them they needed to relax and that they were not allowed to touch each other, even though they were simply holding hands. After witnessing this interaction, we stood up and approached the security guards to understand what the issue was. Unfortunately, the response we received was rude and disrespectful, especially toward paying customers. To avoid further confrontation, we chose to leave. Based on this experience, we will not be returning to R Place.

But when we got there, we felt completely safe the entire time we were there. We've been in many hoods before. The bar is on a major and very well-lit road, with plenty of street parking. We were there looking for somewhere to get some quick Chicago Stepping lessons. We got there and the bar was just opening around 5:30 pm. There was no Chicago Stepping instructor there, like it had been advertised. However, Linda, the main bartender made us feel so welcome that we decided to stay, have drinks and wait for the cook who came in at 7 pm. The drinks were good and strong and the prices were right. The DJ arrived early and played good grown folks R&B music. There were TVs. So my partner was good watching sports clips between our conversations. There's also three bar counters in the place so there was no need for people to crowd one spot to get drinks once the crowd grew. I loved that. The food was worth the wait. The wings, shrimp, and fries were fried to perfection. The crowd was an older crowd... older as in 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s. But everyone was in a partying mood and out to have a good time. We watched several couples Chicago Step on the dance floor just enjoying themselves. I danced once with a regular who taught me a few steps. Then my honey and I had our chance. We had a blast. I would definitely go back there again when I visit the city.

When we pulled up to the venue, we were a little uncertain as to where to enter, as the venue had several stages. A it turns out, the show we went to see was in the "nightclub", interior of the venue. When we walked in, we noticed that many of the tables were reserved. However, it was not yet crowded, so we found an open table still close to the stage. The venue is really pretty small, so no seat is a bad seat. We got drinks right away. They had a full bar and a decent drink menu. We chose the Vieux Carré, which was pre-made in large batches by their bartender, but still very good. It was nice that there was a cocktail server serving us all night. It was also nice that they served food from the restaurant in the nightclub. We were able to share some appetizers before the show. All in all, it was a great venue with an enthusiastic crowd. They had good food and good drinks. I do think I would have been better if they had a larger dance floor, as some of the reserved tables (which remained empty) took up dance floor space. We were still able to find space to dance, but it would have been crowded had there been more dancers.

I Had to walk to her and ask if they were still serving drinks, and order my drinks in a bar that was almost empty (8 people) while she sat there and played on her phone. I was at the bar for an hour, and after walking to her, ordering my drink and finishing it, she still didn't attend us( It honesty had to do a lot with everybody in the bar was light skin and we were brown) If you go, I recommend going when the rooftop is open and the bartender with dark hair is there, she's the best.
