The Magnificent Mile is one of those icons of Chicago. It's the stretch between the Chicago River on the south end and Oak Street on the northern end, and is the dividing line between River North (west of Michigan) and Streeterville (east). The southern end, at Michigan and the Chicago River, is the earliest epicenter of Chicago; home to Jean Baptiste Pointe du Sable, the founder of Chicago, as well as Fort Dearborn. Along the mag mile you'll find upscale restaurants, luxury shopping, fancy hotels, and more. There are multiple malls along the strip; The Shoppes at Northbridge are on the south end, and both the 900 Shops and Water Tower Place flank the north end Michigan Avenue. Tiffany, Louis Vuitton, as well as Burberry's flagship store in the United States and the largest Ralph Lauren in the world. There's also a cafe in that store called Ralph's, and I don't know if it's all for the 'gram or they put something in their coffee but it often has a line out the door. Starbucks Roastery, the largest of their stores worldwide, is on the corner of Erie and Michigan. If you are interested in an afternoon tea, you'll want to see if the Drake is hosting. This hotel has the distinction of hosting many heads of state and other dignitaries, including Princess Diana when she visited in 1996. Some of the cultural landmarks of the city are found here as well. Tribute Tower and Wrigley Building are right at the southernmost end of the Mile. 875 Michigan Avenue, more commonly known as the Hancock Building before that company relinquished the naming rights, boasts one of the city's observation decks (I think it's the better of the two). The Chicago Water Tower and Pumping Station, two of the most prominent and among the few buildings that survived the Chicago Fire, are at Pearson and Michigan on opposite sides of the street and the pumping station is a cool place to check out. You can even visit one of the city's ensemble theaters here, as Lookingglass Theatre is located in the lower levels of the pumping station. You might be surprised to find that there's even a playground right off this famous stretch of road; Seneca Playground is steps from Michigan Avenue if you have kids that need to burn off some energy. There's plenty to do that doesn't include spending money, too. You can catch water taxis near the Wrigley Building to visit other areas along the river (well, I guess that does cost a bit of cash). And there are sometimes events along the street, such as the Lights Parade that happens each Thanksgiving weekend or the art installations that are often found in the green planters along the street. If you're visiting, it's certainly worth a visit as you check out Millennium Park or take an architectural boat tour. read more

Harry Potter is opening up their doors next week! Right off the Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue) in the Omni Hotel with access to Mag Mile. We walked by there and they already had items on their front windows display and it looks so cool! One of our nieces will flip out when I bring her here. She is a fan of Harry Potter! The tulips are just starting to develop their stems and peeking through but not until May will they be dressing the entire Down Town and Mag Mile! I was last in Chicago over 10 years ago, so I recently made a much needed return to the "Windy City." Being a Brooklyn kid, I forgot how much I enjoy being in an urban setting like Chicago. It has a certain energy and vibrancy which cannot be replicated out in the suburbs. I was staying with some friends near the "Magnificent Mile," so of course, we had to spend some time visiting the most famous street in Chicago. The concept for the Magnificent Mile was part of the 1909 Burnham Plan and construction started in the 1920's. Seemingly every decade or so, the thoroughfare undergoes changes as new shops and restaurants rise and fall. No trip to Chicago is complete unless you wander up and down Michigan Ave to check out the array of high-end shopping and the endless variety of restaurants. New York has Times Square, Nashville has Broadway, and Chicago has The Magnificent Mile! This iconic stretch is a great visit for anyone visiting the city. The sidewalks are beautifully landscaped and lined with stunning buildings that showcase both intricate and modern designs. Shopping here can be quite fruitful and fun as there's everything from local shops and standard retail stores to high-end flagship retailers. While I was not interested in the shopping, I was interested in the Starbucks Reserve, which serves booze along with coffee! Majority of the mile is flanked with shopping, but there are a few restaurants along the road, but most of the eateries are just off of Michigan Avenue. Crossing over the bridge offers additional breathtaking views of the river and skyline, making for a perfect photo op. The area is dotted with amazing art installations that add to the vibe of the mile. While it is not art per say, the one-of-a-kind Apple Store and the historic Chicago Tribune building are art in their own right! Overall, The Magnificent Mile is a fantastic blend of shopping, sights, and culture. Definitely a highlight of any Chicago visit! read more

So much to see. You definitely can get some steps in walking around this fantastic City. This mile alone from it's shops to the tulips that looked like they had been freshly planted and awaiting their bloom. Not even to mention the view you get looking down the river from the middle of the bridge. The buildings are so tall and majestic. You can't help but use your imagination to transport you back to what it looked like way back when. If you close your eyes and concentrate you can almost see it and hear it. Within this mile alone you can feed your tummy and get some major shopping in. So many stores; so little time...lol! What a wonderful City and one I will visit again and again just because. We dined last night at Althea inside Saks 5th Avenue ~ renowned celebrity chef and plant-based pioneer, Matthew Kenney @althearestaurant on the @chicagomagmile. It was the most amazing meal we have ever eaten in our entire life!! The food was absolutely exceptional! We ordered a variety of appetizers, kimchi dumplings, mac n cheese, jackfruit crab cakes! Every bite left us in awe and it definitely exceeded our expectations. This is plant-based dining at its absolute finest. Gorgeous views of the beautiful starlit Chicago skyline was an added bonus. For our main courses we ordered the vegan zucchini lasagna, spicy udon noodles and kelp noodle caccio pepe. We honestly took turns tasting each other's meals because we just couldn't get enough. The lasagna is a cold dish, but it's so fresh and full of fragrant flavors it's electrifying with each bite. The udon noodles are in a world of their own! Shops, shops, shops, everywhere! The Magnificent Mile is a mile-long stretch in downtown Chicago that features some of the most iconic buildings and, of course, shopping stores. Think of it as the New York Times Square equivalent but span for a mile. The shops range from department stores to very high-end luxury brands. My recommendation to save your wallet from drowning is to visit before opening hours, which is around 8-9 AM. Most of the shops open at 10 or 11AM, so this way, if the shops aren't open, you can't spend your money. Besides the shops on this path, we were mesmerized by the city landscape, the architecture, and the different vibrant views. There are plenty of restaurants and cafes around, and it's even home to the largest Starbucks in the world. It's truly a magnificent (hence the name) place to spend an afternoon and definitely worth adding to your itinerary. read more

This is absolutely a must for anybody visiting Chicago! It's a huge tourist attraction and you also see lots of locals enjoying the beautiful area and the area of art that sprays water so the kids can cool off. I posted some pictures if you want to check it out! It's just really fun, lots to see and it's very clean and safe. I know a lot of people say a lot about Chicago being dangerous but I didn't experience anything like that when I was on the mile. There were lots of uniform police officers around and everybody that I came in contact with was very kind. They have some very interesting art pieces that make for a great photo ops. There's also the famous "Bean" which is just hilarious and you have to check it out and get a picture by it lol. From the mile you can also get to shopping and other tourist attractions like the ice cream museum and tons of restaurants. You could definitely get a days worth of fun in that area alone. read more

Now, I'm not much of a shopper, but I thoroughly enjoyed staying in the heart of Chicago for a few days after Christmas. The Magnificent Mile is a beautiful part of the city and close to everything we wanted to do. It was about a 45-minute train ride from O'Hare, but that was the longest time we spent on the El during this trip. We made our way to other parts of town using the blue, red, and brown lines, easily transferring between trains. Our nearest train stop was just a 5 minute walk from our hotel. My wife and daughter did some shopping. There were plenty of options ranging from very high end to more practical stores. I did actually go into the Orvis store. It's really hard for me to justify spending 100.00 for a flannel, but it was fun to look around. What we all enjoyed were the plentiful bars and restaurants around The Magnificent Mile. There were amazing options just minutes from our hotel. This is a really beautiful part of Chicago and an area that I would definitely visit or spend a few days in again. read more

*** Architecture, art, and history lovers will absolutely fall in love with The Magnificent Mile! *** The "Father of Skyscrapers and Modernism," Louis Sullivan once said, "The problem of the tall office building is one of the most stupendous, one of the most magnificent opportunities that the Lord of Nature in His beneficence has ever offered to the proud spirit of man." It's important to note that Sullivan, a Chicago-based architect who still has buildings standing all across the U.S., was a mentor to perhaps an even more famous architect, Frank Lloyd Wright. I was a bit sad to see so many businesses inoperative, though, during my COVID-19 restrictive visit in early April 2021. I recommend driving down the Mile to get a sense of the towering buildings and later enjoy a nice long stroll on which presumably you'll want to have a camera handy. There are just so many features, designs, statues, murals, and other appeasing characteristics that make it "Chicago." In addition to some pretty fabulous restaurants, there is plenty of shopping for every budget on the Mile. It's so amazing to see these modern marvels any time of the day, but my favorite viewing time was at night. Minimal traffic (compared to L.A. - WHAT?!) Wide sidewalks. Not as much trash in the area floating around as I anticipated for the "Windy City." And finally... the amazing history and people of the city itself... those were my personal favorite side notes from my visit to The MAGNIFICENT Mile. read more

Went downhill from its glory years, and continues to do so year after year. Not the same vibe as pre pandemic. Lots of closed businesses. City seems to want to keep the tourist strip looking cute though, and they're content with letting the entire south and west sides waste away and crumble. Just a faithful showing of what the city of Chicago prioritizes and what they don't. What's the use trying to rake in all those tourism bux if your city is notorious for mismanaging funds. But hey if it screams "spectacle" and pulls the wool over the tourists' eyes, it's all fair right? read more

I used to love walking this strip back in the days. All the high end shops and boutiques hustle and bustle keeping this iconic mile long nom-stop actions. Tourists and local alike, coming from all over the world. The beautiful landscape along the way, seasonally changes, keeping it so interesting, fresh and stunning all the time. During the unrest summer 2020 protests and looting events, unfortunately, this lively strip is no longer the same once it was. On our visit in October 2020, we walked out dog on this strip many times, 80% of storefronts are boarded up still. Cop cars and securities are in every block. You have to sign up or making appointment to visit these high end luxury stores. It's a very unfortunate scene to see. The landscaping still remains beautiful, the 2 iconic churches still standing tall. Looking up to these wonderful architecture of skyscrapers, how lucky to be there. Beautiful River Walk to the Oak Street Beach... Hope for a better day ahead, when things will get better, safer, and nicer for all than the ore-pandemic. Keep on praying and vote! read more

What an iconic (and very high-end) area of Downtown Chicago, they aren't kidding when they call this the Magnificent Mile. Do not miss an opportunity to check out this awesome area of the city if you're in the area - it's super fun to stroll down even if you don't want to shop for anything. Even then, I am sure you will find something you'll end up buying of any kind. The architecture of all the different buildings you'll walk by will leave you in awe. It's not just the shops here that make this area famous - there's tons of great dining options featuring cuisine from all over the world too. Despite this area being one of the more touristy areas of the city, I wouldn't say I felt overwhelmed by the crowds here. And I was here on a Friday mid-afternoon. The sidewalks are quite wide in comparison to what you might find in cities like New York or Toronto. I was also quite surprised to see how clean the Magnificent Mile was. The sidewalks were well-maintained with minimal trash lying around, and safety is not an issue in this area. I wish I had spent more time looking around Downtown Chicago, especially the Magnificent Mile. I will have to make another trip here at some point. read more

Absolutely amazing. Even given the current social unrest, the Mag Mile is a magical walk. There are stores galore to meet every budget or economical background. I walked and enjoyed the scenery and shopping. I dipped in and out without issue to various establishments. Some stores have wood boards up, but are open to the public. I remember my first visit down the Magnificent Mile like it was yesterday. At the time I just so happened to be a tourist in Chicago, visiting family in central Illinois. During that visit, it was like zero-dark-thirty in the morning and I was headed towards a car rental place at one of the hotels. Years later I became a resident of Chicago and my visits turned into bike rides to escape my neighborhood, plus to visit sites like John Hancock Tower and Fourth Presbyterian Church. I view the Mag Mile as my gateway to-and-from the inner city. And I tend to be very bold and in the mood to people watch while cycling down this strip because it is congested with tourists and impatient drivers who just want to get to their destination resulting in relentless behaviors. If you want to shop at well-known shopping outlets like Under Armour, Nike, Saks Fifth Avenue, H&M, Zara, plus visit known sites like John Hancock Tower and Water Tower. Why visit elsewhere when you have everything all in the Streeterville, River North, Gold Coast area. In my honest opinion, the best time to visit the Mag Mile is during the holiday season because it is beautiful with flashy lights along the strip which adds to its iconic architecture. Plus everyone visiting the city being in the holiday spirit, which may make you fall in love with the city even more. I recommend using the cities transportation system (CTA Train, Bus, Cab, Uber, Lyft, etc) if you are staying outside of the Mag Mile sector. Doing so will keep you relieved of having to deal with impatient drivers and expensive, overcrowded parking lots and garages. Keep that in mind and I hope this review assists you in any way. If you find yourself visiting Chicago, chances are you'll stroll along some portion of it along Michigan Ave. Yes you'll find plenty of tourists and foot traffic walking up and down, but it's easily one of the most beautiful and iconic streets in Chicago. Sidewalks are well maintained and cleaned regularly and throughout the seasons you'll nice the festive decor (christmas lights in the winter and fresh tulips in the spring). One of the most beautiful streets to see at night when all the lights are up. While I often find myself avoiding this part of the city, it's definitely worth taking visiting friends and family for a drive or stroll down Michigan Ave to at least see the landmarks and store fronts. One of the touristy need to do spots in Chicago. In all honestly it's also hard to avoid as a local. Downsides it's crazy packed and as a bus bike or car have to stop at almost every block. Upside is that the shopping on Mag Mile can't be beat. The city keeps the street and sidewalk extremely clean, such a refresher compared to NYC and SF. Please also take note of the gorgeously manicured landscaped sidewalk planters, all the different plants flowers decor. I am always impressed!!! read more

The Magnificent Mile on a Friday night is quite busy with tourists as this is the precursor night before the Magnificent Mile Parade. Today at 4pm there was a small ceremony to light the beautiful big Christmas tree outside the old Wrigley building. The small area outside the gothic Chicago Tribune building is filled with tents offering a retreat from the chill of the evening. Eli's Cheesecake is a big attraction with free slices of plain cheesecake. A dollar donation to the Greater Food Depository will get you a snickers or pumpkin cheese cake. $10 will get you a big plain cheese cake. You shoulda seen me window shoppin'! Window shoppin' with eyes a-poppin' along the Magnificent Mile! Who wouldn't give the Mag Mile anything less than five stars!? This place is as five stars as it gets. This is the shopping district for Chicago, and arguably for the entire Midwest. East Coast has Fifth Avenue, West Coast has Rodeo Drive, this is the best it's gonna get in this part of the country! Every major American retailer has a spot along here. Every high end place, that is. If you're into chain department stores, international jewelry stores, multinational conglomerate shopping- this is the place. The place is full of magnificent things to see- the entire street level was artificially raised to make things look better, leaving a sublevel that's where the river is. Wow! There's parks, and old buildings, and new ones too. The architecture is the thing to behold around here. Be sure to check out the Hancock Tower on the north end of the Mile, and the Tribune Tower to the South end of the Mag Mile.
