I feel sad writing this review, but I felt just as sad on my visit to the Marketplace at Steamtown. Years ago, when I line shopping took the world by storm, I remember the malls dying. It was a strange time. Since then, retailers have learned what works in a brick and mortar and what doesn't on. Most shopping centers bounced back, even if it was often with different types of shops. I'm really not sure what is going on here. The food court only had a few options open and so many empty booths. The mall itself was just dead and most of the people I saw coming and going were patrons of the crunch fitness. I thought perhaps it could have been the time of day that I visited, but it was incredibly busy outside, so I doubt it. Being a historic landmark, I really hope they figure out how to reconfigure this mall and increase business soon. read more

If you wish to visit a microcosm of the decline of the American shopping center, then look no further than here. The "mall" opens at 10 AM, but that doesn't necessarily mean all the stores open at 10 AM. I guess it's arbitrary what time a store within this marketplace is allowed to open. Various medical offices and a ghost town of a food court/eatery are available. Need an offbrand no name dollar store... they have it. How about an old Hallmark store that's been retrofitted into a discount beauty supply?They have that as well. But what if you want an advertised Mexican restaurant coming soon that has had brown paper up on the window for over a year? They can make that happen as well! Empty store fronts that are available to rent now? They're there! But, surely the escalators work? I wouldn't count on it, especially since multiple escalators have been non operational for 3+ weeks. If it wasn't for the gym, aquarium and Boscovs department store, I doubt there would be much foot traffic if any. read more

The Marketplace at Steamtown is basically dead from a retail/shopping perspective. When you first arrive, parking is either in the parking garage below the mall or the parking decks on either side of the anchors. They now charge to park and it's not cheap, but there is some sort of validation system if you go into the mall that I do not totally understand, as it's unclear if you need to purchase something. Upon entering, it's very clear the whole mall is in deep trouble tenant wise with a tremendous number of vacancies. The lower-level primarily houses a social security office, Electric City Aquarium which seems to attract a significant amount of foot traffic, and other space being re-purposed. Delta Medix occupies a former anchor's whole floor. Boscov's has entrances on both the lower and upper levels. The upper-level is worse off in many ways as a large portion is being re-developed into medical offices for Geisinger. Scranton Pubic Market, which was supposed to be the Marketplace's new centerpiece, has failed and is almost totally empty. The crossover bridge to the Steamtown National Historic Site appears to be permanently closed. Luzerne County Community College occupies part of a former anchor. This floor also contains Crunch Fitness. Steamtown used to be the good mall, a mall that you visited once a year if outside of the area. I visit once every few years to see how it's doing and it gets sadder and more disappointing each visit. Realistically, I can't tell you a good reason to come here unless you need one of the few services the mall offers. Viewmont actually offers shopping options, and shockingly, is easier to access with better parking. That's really saying something. I continue to wonder if The City of Scranton or The University of Scranton could have better utilized this space if they would have won the mall at auction. read more

Walking in this mall reminds me of retail shops getting eaten up by online shopping. There's plenty of parking and any store can validate your parking ti ket to get it free just buy even as low as a $1 in any of the stores. It's a place for the folks to buy their things but for a tourist it's not worth visiting. read more

I love the Steamtown Mall I have been going there for many many years I love the people that work there I also love the antique shop that they have in Boscov's and also even Starbucks really nice Mall nice to look at things and have a nice shopping experience if I could give it more than a five I certainly would read more

I stopped by here solely for their food court as it was connected to the Steamtown Park next door via a walking bridge. While their food court is voluminous, there were lots of open stalls that appears to be built and ready for small places to fill in. It reminded me more of a Farmer's Market or a Craft Co-op place that leaves the infrastructure up throughout the week. There were a couple of smoothie or coffee places, a place that had cookies, and on the edges a pizza place and a cheesesteak place. Actually, the mall had at least two pizza places within 100 feet of each other. We decided to look around the mall and didn't see much else that interested us except an Aquarium (which I will likely come back for with my wife if we visit the train museum again) and a Delorean. YUP, A DELOREAN! My favorite car. We didn't know it was here. I still don't know what it is here. I don't care. I had to get pictures with it. It called to me. I am concerned it might have triggered my midlife crisis car buying urge a bit early. Marty McFly: "Wait a minute. There's a handful of good things about this mall, and almost none of them is shopping. #1 the aquarium is amazing. It's incredibly underrated and it's an awesome place for this town. #2 is the welcome to Scranton sign from the into of The Office. You can take great pictures with it! #3 is The Office souvenir stores. #4 is Crunch fitness. I've honestly never been there because I am not a local, but it looks very nice and it is so cool that the roads passes underneath the gym, so that you can watch cars travel underneath you as you run on the treadmill. #5 is the underground parking garage. Make sure you get your ticket validated! #6 is the downtown location. You can walk to many other nice restaurants and shops in town too. That's about it. The clothing stores are so-so and it looks like things are slowly transitioning to medical offices. But at least they aren't vacant or closed. Oh and there's a Starbucks. read more

As someone who truly knows what a dying mall looks like, this mall is not dying. We visited on a Sunday afternoon, as my sister & I are HUGE Office fans and we just had to stop by the infamous Steamtown mall and see the Welcome to Scranton sign, and to enjoy a girl's day at the office (sadly, without Michael Scott buying us things from Victoria's Secret). This mall was way busier than I expected, after reading reviews. On Sunday afternoons they have live music, and the food court was bustling. We were short on time, so we didn't hang out here too long, however we really enjoyed walking around the mall, checking out the gorgeous artwork painted near the Welcome to Scranton sign, and taking photos with the infamous sign. Overall, we had a wonderful time! Side note: Parking is free if you park in the garage and are under 3 hours in the mall. read more

Being big fans of 'The Office', we only had one reason for dropping by this mall ... and that was to see the 'Scranton Welcomes You' sign in person! The great thing was that it cost us nothing to do that as the parking was free in the private parking garage. From the few minutes we were here, the mall was empty and there didn't seem like there were any popular stores to shop at. In fact, the number of stores inside was very limited. After a few minutes of wandering around, we saw that the 'Scranton Welcomes You' sign was located to the right side of Boscov's on the 2nd floor in a large empty area. To be specific, it was about 100 feet ahead and to the right of Boscov's. It's a spot you really can't miss. Other than the 'Scranton Welcomes You' sign, there wasn't much else to look at in the mall. read more

Visited from out of town on a Sunday, after seeing mixed reviews online and decided to check it out. The mall is half dead, in relation to actual stores....its main attraction is the Welcome to Scranton sign from The Office. As malls continue to dissolve, don't expect anything major stores left, Boscovs was alright. The mall is slowly trying to covert into mixed use more business then retail in my opinion. The mall gears toward children with the store similar to Build a Bear, Aquarium and Bees Backyard... The parking is in a covered garage where its free the first 45 minutes, then a ticket needs to be validated for 3 hrs of parking....honestly if I didn't stop into Boscov's and had a Cream Cheese Pretzel at Bavarian Pretzel, probably would have only taken 45 minutes or less to walk through. The malls website advertises " Steam Town Marketplace"...the conversion of their food court was modern and speculator...its just too bad there are few vendors, a lot of empty stands, no farmers market..the Center City Wine Cellar was a ghost town...no one was even there if you wanted to sample wine or check the place out. My advice market and plan better for future success....For the few things that are in the mall...unless your a young child, or into the Office...don't waste your time or the trip. read more

This is a very low key mall. They have a arming garage under it and that validate parking. There are not many stores in there, but it has an aquarium, some shoe stores, a phone store and a gym. The aquarium has a a reptile part and gift shop and is pretty big. The marketplace is also the home to the Scranton sign that is seen on the show The Office. It was moved here from the exit ramp it was previously on because of all the traffic it created. The mall is not plagued by loitering teens like other malls that I have been to. It it located in the heart of downtown and is easily accessible. There is not a big food court either. There are some eateries, but not a food court. The mall has a Starbucks that is also available to patronize and has its on entrance so its hours are independent of the mall. The mall is currently operating on modified hours and some of the stores in the mall or closing even sooner than the mall, so if you plan on visiting please verify the hours before you go. I liked this mall even though the shopping options are limited. it is very clean and not crowed. read more

The Mall at Steamtown was a decent way to spend an hour on Boxing Day in Scranton visiting with the SO's fam for the holidays. While not a "mall person," I did appreciate a few very nice things here, such as free parking (holiday special?), the Irish store (get your Irish sweaters!), the sports memorabilia place, and Boscov's department store (definitely the highlight--check out the As Seen on TV Section). On the odder side, I observed multiple tax-related storefronts, including a local tax payment office, as well as accountants operating out of the mall. Wow, Scranton, you're really serious about tax collection! The food court looked OK--there was even an ethnic food counter (African/soul food, I think). Thanks to the SO's 'rents, I was fuller than the Post Office on April 15 (taxes!), so I passed, but it looked interesting. On a sadder note, our visit dovetailed with the closing of the Bon-Ton, Steamtown's version of Macy's. Bon-Ton, I hardly knew yee, but your demise made me think of small-town and Midwestern decline. The space looked desolate, with fire-sales and haphazardly organized stock--whatever was left of it, anyway. Even the retails shelves were tagged for sale. Hopefully another mega-store will take its place, continuing a great American tradition. Malls! read more

Though this place is half empty I have to give it a high rating because I can see what the developer is trying to develop. The views on the backside overlooking the train yard is really cool. If they can get a decent amount of local entrepreneurs to fill those stalls it could be similar to Lexington Market for us here in Baltimore. What I see the developer trying to build here is really nice and I hope it can catch on. Sadly it seems the town is just to small to fill it. read more

This place is like everything else in Scranton: cheap, dingy, and third rate. They have the children's play area on the second floor along with an OK food court and the walkway bridge that connects the mall to Steamtown National Historic Site and past that................... The "anchor" stores of Boscov's and Bon-Ton are great for the blue-haired set that likes to pay high prices and wait ten minutes for seventy year old Dutchy Flo to wrap and bag a t-shirt that you picked out in thirty seconds. But other than being the only mall in downtown there really is no reason to go there. read more

So sad to see. More than half of the storefronts are vacant. Boscovs is the only draw here. Parking is bizarre. Free 45 minutes with the ticket you get when entering the garage. That is honestly enough time but if you exceed it gets VERY expensive. Unless you ask a mall clerk for a 3 hr validated ticket. Wow. Visit while you can. This had a steve & barry's which had mad cheap ass clothes. like 2 dollar sandals, 7 dollar hoodies. I mean it's not designer, but when you ruin stuff often because you're totally clumsy this place is for you (and me!) There also was a boscovs, bontons, victoria's secret, a&f, american egle, hollister, starbucks, etc... all the stores you'd find at any other mall. It has a great foodcourt, where you can look out across and see the Steamtown national historic site. read more

If you're a fan of the office, be prepared to be very underwhelmed. If you go just to take a photo with the Scranton sign, you may be just fine. We scoured both floors for a store we recognized but every single store is kind of dirty, grungy, not really sure what they were selling and even more confused by the people actually shopping (what could they possibly have needed there?) I was at least excited for the Starbucks on the way out, but it took a really long time there, so I guess it really was just for the Scranton sign. read more

It's a shame about this place, because it could be a really nice mall. At best it's a boring, uninspired and bland commercial center, and at worst it's a failed wasteland. The food court in particular has been abandoned, and I think I saw perhaps one restaurant open. Judging from my trip on a Saturday, about a quarter of the stores in the rest of the mall are closed. The ones that are left are nothing special, just run of the mill stuff. Its unique location and cleanliness would typically lead to success, but this mall has mostly failed. I'd say avoid if possible. The best thing about it is dollar vending machines for soda, and a booming Starbucks. Not much else is going on. read more

Stopped here on the way west on I-80 for a business trip to Columbus , Ohio. Basically stopped here because the mall has a sign saying there's a Dunder-Mifflin store inside,and I'm a huge fan of "The Office". Yes, I know that's a lame/cheesy reason. PS: the Dunder Mifflin Kiosk is good, but a bit overpiriced. The labels on the products say "NBC Universal" so I assume they are overpriced because they are from the NBC store. They probably have the same prices in Times Squre, NY. They have a family bathroom up on the 2nd floor behind the food court, and my wife took my son there. It's clean enough, but not sparkling. There's a (free) kid's play area up in the food court on the 2nd floor. This mall is good, but not great. I would stop here again; I don't get the feeling that there are a lot of choices in the area. Yeah, this is a dead mall. Half occupied, and only half of those actual stores. Most of the place closes at 7, come on. And paying for parking to be here when you've seen everything in 15 minutes? I really hope stores can fill up this mall again because it's a lovely place. Sunlight streams in from everywhere, it's very well designed to have lunch and shop. The stores that remain are friendly and I love antiques so I appreciated those, and I love that there's a bookstore and aquarium. I hope more retail returns to it soon. read more

Amazing collection of local spots to eat and mom & pop shops . Scranton Public Market is located on the 2nd floor (old food court area) and is packed with authentic ethnic cuisine and scratch-made food! Plus they are host several events per year with live music, local vendors (all kinds), kids activities.. you name it. Super convenient free parking, covered garage is a huge bonus. as dorky as it might sound, we stopped in Scranton, PA on a mini road trip this summer... why you may ask? because we love "The Office" and we heard the "Welcome to Scranton" sign from the shows opening credits was in the mall. The Steamtown Mall was also mentioned on the show pretty often so we were excited to check it out. We also saw on the malls website that a Dunder Mifflin Store was now open as well. Awesome! We arrived in Scranton and the mall was easy enough to find (there are signs as soon as you get off the highway). Parking is free in a garage which is very convenient. You can walk up through Boscovs (a department store) or through a Mall Entrance. We had no idea what Boscov's was so we opted for the Mall Entrance which was a bit further away. no big deal. I'd read online that the Welcome to Scranton sign was in the food court. not true. It is on the second floor, shunned into a random hallway in front of a furniture store.. but whatever.. we found it, we got our pictures with it and we moved on. Next, we went to find the Dunder Mifflin store. The "store" consists of a shopping cart in the middle of the mall. (sigh). T-Shirts are $25 each (3 for $65) and everything else is overpriced as well. I'd recommend just buying online... After that, we walked through Boscov's (which we'd compare to a JC Penney), back to the car and decided to drive around Scranton for a bit. If you watch The Office a lot, you know they mention actual restaurants that exist in Scranton. We found Farleys and a few other hot spots... but we didn't dare stop. Scranton isn't the nicest city I've ever been too... but maybe we just hit it on a bad day. Beware that there are a lot of one-ways and a lot of construction.... kind of difficult to navigate through, even with a GPS. I'll admit Scranton probably would've been a lot cooler if we went during an Office convention or something... but we didnt.. would we go back? no. are we glad we went for the experience? yes. read more

Not much to say about this place. Went in to look for a bathing suit because I was staying at a hotel not too far away. The only store that sold them was Boscov's which wanted no less than $100.00. That was a negative for me. Just wasn't happening. They had a few good other sales. Most of the stores in the mall were not open. The mall is still under construction. Not a mall I would return to unless they opened more stores. read more

This is a large mall, very reminiscent of what's at Market Street in Philadelphia. While much of downtown Scranton seems shuttered, yet clean, this mall is mostly full. The two anchor department stores have few customers on a weekday. For some it may be easier to shop. The specialty stores here by far offer more personalized assistance. An example: Have a strong preference to do business with the staff and a better layout at Boscov's in Binghamton or Lancaster locations. The customers' sullen public attitudinal dimension here you can't / won't change. Still, I don't think this mall to be outdated like others indicate. It has some solid amenities. read more

Went to a party at Bees Backyard, what a dump, dirty, gross, disgusting place. You can't have it catered, have to buy their food, junk pizzas, OMG. Then you have to take your shoes off, and hope you don't have to use the bathroom, because your socks will get wet, unsanitary much??? NEVER AGAIN!!! Go somewhere else for your child's party, for their safety and yours. read more

Dont' stop here if you are looking for something to eat as their food court is minimal with hot dogs, chicken & waffles, and a subway. They do have a nice Starbucks at the front entrance. They do not have a good place for toddlers as their playground is better for ages 5-10. Their play area is like the slides you would find at McDonalds playground. They do have a tiny children's museum where for $3, a child could play with educational toys. But you also have to pay as an adult $3 to enter. The mall has seen better days as numerous stores are out. This wasn't what we hoped for when we stopped in Scranton. We just needed a place for a toddler to crawl around and play for 30-60 minutes and they did not have it here. I would walk down the street if you are hungry as well. Free parking in the garage was one plus after spending a week paying for parking in Boston. read more

Reminds me of Union Station back in St Louis, but with more shops. As far as the food court goes, your choices are very limited (I think 3 or 4 choices tops), but there is also a nice sit down restaurant. There is a starbucks for those of you craving coffee, a hair salon, and a nail place. Oh did I mention there is a library on the upper level that doubles as a bookstore? Also, if you need to pay property tax, there is a place for that as well. Not a bad mall at all, just a little out dated, but still great for shopping. Nice place to get away on a hot day. read more

We did not get to explore this mall much other than the exterior and the Starbucks but one big thing comes to mind.... 1982 called and it wants it's mall back! Old, outdated, and just blah. I will say the Bon Ton had some attractive catchy things in the window but that was about it. I am sure there are better areas/places to shop in Scranton. I guess if you are in town and in a mind and need to go somewhere, this will suffice though. read more

I hadn't been to the mall for months. And when I returned this past weekend, I was disheartened at what I saw. Half the stores on the second floor sit empty. And there were barely any people roaming around in the mall. Dickson city and montage mountain shopping centers have stolen the thunder away from this, what used to be a charming place to go shopping. read more

Stopped here and there are virtually no stores open. Only department store was Boscov's. All stores are up for lease . No Hollister, Abercrombie , Express or Limited. A beautiful mall wasted !:( read more
