The Mayflower is another one of the pubs we booked dinner reservations for in advance while on our vacation in London. While you can hang out in the crowd and grab a pint easily without that, if you want to dine in the quieter dining area with views of the water you may want to do so as well. Especially if you want the elbow room to enjoy such great food. The Mayflower is named after the famous ship carrying the early American settlers, and the church tied to this voyage is steps away where apparently an unmarked grave hosts the resting spot of the captain of that ship. It's candlelit and kind of romantic on the top floor with great views. For food, my wife had the chicken pie and I had the special of the day, lamb stew with housemade potato salad. It was warm, flavorful and delicious, sentiments my wife shared on the pot pie. We split an order of mac and cheese, and it was also delicious. Such great comfort food. I had a small scotch pour and an ale, my wife a glass of wine. I had a small port to pair with the sticky toffee pudding at the end which was terrific. My wife swears by Gordon Ramsey's recipe of the same but this one was hard to beat IMO. read more

There's something about this place that just feels so cozy and historic. This place was recommended by our tour guide after our tour finished so we all piled in here. Overall I had high expectations for this place as I read reviews. I have Mayflower ancestors so I figured I better visit. Overall it was pretty solid. Our host was superb, providing honest feedback on the various adult beverage we were considering. (He suggested is to taste before we committed!) The fish and chips that my husband had were light and crispy, not greasy in the least! And the Beef pie, which I had, with the gravy and mash was divine! Certainly not pre-fab food. My first time in England , I was looking forward to visiting one of the old pubs and came across this one. The outside & inside looked awesome. Me and my teenage daughter came for dinner. We didn't know the protocol do we wait to be seated and or seat yourself so we asked the male bartender(with a beard) who by the way was very kind thru out the whole experience. But there was a male server that openly mocked me then laughed after i asked the question like I was an idiot. I've been a bartender for 11 years where i come from that's not ok. There was no signs on what to do my bad for asking a question. Food was great but that male server needs a lesson in manners. read more

We stopped in the Mayflower on our first evening in town. My bestie hadn't been to London before and we both hadn't been to the Mayflower so it only seemed fitting to come in for a drink. I also wanted a Sunday roast so when I knew we'd be coming in for a drink I booked us in for dinner as well. We did drinks downstairs and dinner upstairs. As a non smoker, I often forget about pub life within minutes I was engulphed on the patio - not my fav thing. Dinner was so special, upstairs dining is simply put - magical, in every sense. We both had the Sunday roast special and shared the sticky toffee pudding. I'd just made homemade sticky toffee puddings in the weeks leading up to our visit and I can say mine at home were spot on to the Mayflowers. Superb in every way! This iconic pup known as the Mayflower Pub is remarkable. When you walk inside it feels like you teleported back in time. The vibe is good it's outdoor seating on the patio where you can have a view of the waterfront. Every worker here was extremely friendly and helpful. Our server was on top of it during our lunch. First, let me say, we loved the history of this British Pub. The pub is old, quaint, and authentic. We were seated upstairs, and Lucy was our server, she was excellent. Our first stop was the bar where Mr. Bee got a pint of Mayflower Scurvy Ale, and loved it. Then we were directed upstairs for our reservation and were seated by the window overlooking the River Thames. Lucy was prompt to the table, was friendly, talkative, and was kind enough to get the Mayflower Descendant book for us to sign. Lucy offered great suggestions for dinner as she lit the actual candles on each table. We thoroughly enjoyed visiting with her. We started with the Burrata and tomato appetizer which was fresh and scrumptious. Mr. Bee went with the traditional British Fish and Chips and said it was delicious. I chose the vegetarian British pie which was a traditional pie, but filled with jackfruit which I love. It has the same consistency as beef, and the gravy was rich. You would never know it was vegetarian. It was served with perfectly cooked mashed potatoes, carrots, broccoli, and cabbage. I loved it. We had such a great time, enjoyed every minute of the pub experience, and will go back the next time we are in London. read more

Located right in the River Thames, this is where the actual Mayflower set off from London to the States with high-hopes Pilgrims looking for a new life. We ordered fish and chips (fantastic) and a friend had a burger which he remarked was great. They actually eat there a couple times a month. This is one of my favorite pubs in London. We took the ferry down the Greenwhich and then took the bus/train halfway back and walked to The Mayflower. Supposedly, this is the place the Mayflower took of on it's way to pick up the Pilgrims for their trip to what. would become New England. mean, this could be true, but even if not, the place is one of the oldest in London and very cool. We sat out on the deck which overlooks the Thames, with what was most definitely a more local crowd. The good thing about the Mayflower is that it's a little off the beaten path, so not so touristy. That being said, of course I had the fish & chips, and a couple of pints, after which, we walked all the way back up to Convent Garden. Absolutely loved this place! Was a little confused at first. You walk in and it's a VERY lively bar. Started to wonder if my son could eat there. The bartender explained to go upstairs though, to the restaurant. Yes, we were confused tourists. The upstairs was a bit more sedate, not exactly quiet but a more comfortable eating atmosphere. Waitresses all genuinely nice and helpful. I ordered I think their last Beef Wellington and it was actually one of the best I've ever had - anywhere. Just melted when you touched it. Such a beautiful pub, outside and in! While the history they claim is a bit unclear (the Mayflower "may" have docked outside), that doesn't change the fact that the pub is clearly very old and has an incredibly interesting and quaint interior. The pub is very small, so I'd recommend making reservations (the booths in the main bar area are best) if you are wanting to eat. I'd highly recommend a visit, especially as it's off the beaten track of the tourist hordes. read more

I can't believe I haven't reviewed The Mayflower yet! It's allegedly one of the oldest pubs in London, and my Airbnb hosts highly recommended it. Since I arrived late and it was nearby, it seemed like a no-brainer to stop in for dinner. When I walked in, I noticed the place was packed to the gills. The bar area didn't have any seats, and I couldn't tell if I had walked in the right entry or not. Either way, one of the very nice bartenders quickly asked what I needed. I asked if they had a table available. At first she said they were all booked up through the night. I thanked her and considered ordering a pint while figuring out where to go....until she asked, "wait, just one??" I said yes, and she said she'd be right back. Within minutes, they brought me upstairs to the table closest to the steps/bathrooms. It was clearly their reject table but obviously I didn't care. They seemed to care much more than me, actually. They even offered me another table but said I'd only have like 45 minutes before a reservation. Otherwise, the table I was at was good for however long. I stayed with the however-long table. I ordered a half pint of local beer and the steak and ale pie. Both were insanely good. I also spent a good amount of time eavesdropping on the table conversation next to me and feeling happy to be alone. They were loud and cynical. Although I was dining solo, it really didn't feel that way. Mostly because I had somewhere between 3 and 5 servers constantly hovering over me wanting to make sure everything was okay. I noticed they didn't do that to the other tables and appreciated their concern. So I may have had the worst seat in the house, but it was still pretty stellar. An excellent intro to London and a meal I won't quickly forget! And I can say that with certainty because it's been two months and I still remember it well! read more

Love the overall vibe of this place, which mixes history with hipster (trivia night was happening when I was there).. Food was reasonably priced for London and came out quite tasty - we tried some delicious daily specials. Decent beer selection on tap as well. As a descendant of several relatives, it was an honor to sign the Descendants Book and to read the comments of other descendants and patrons. Reservations are recommended because it is busy and is a local favorite. Sit on the deck outside if it is a sunny day!! Today, on Easter Sunday, chocolate Cadbury eggs where hidden in the restaurant for the children...it was so cute!!! The location is a bit off the beaten path. I had the pleasure of visiting this pub last week...and dare I say it's absolutely cosy in here? It was after we'd been walking around for quite a while and the sun wasn't so graceful to warm us up much...so instead we chose to warm up at the Mayflower: both inside (by drinking a pint of ale) and outside (by sitting right next to a cracking fire place). Funny story... Secret Service agent staying in our hotel for Queen's funeral suggested this place when we asked where in London for best Fish and Chips. Agent had been in London dozens of times and said Mayflower was the place. TRUE! Cab driver said it was a first driving there. Mayflower is a small pub tucked into a residential area (aren't they all?) On the Thames. Visited this vintage pub for its American-style, prix fixe dinner on the American Thanksgiving Day. This pub marks the dock from which the Mayflower (THE Mayflower!!!) sailed en route to the New World. As Americans in London for business over Thanksgiving, we could not have asked for a more welcoming, accommodating, warm holiday meal away from home. Turkey, veg and mash were followed by pecan and pumpkin pie, all washed down with a pint of Mayflower Scurvy! Top it all off with a cozy pub and adorable upstairs dining room dripping with old ambiance and atmosphere, and you have an outstanding London pub experience. We were charmed by this place, filled by its food, and welcomed by its crew. London has a number of atmospheric pubs, goodness knows, but this little gem is worth the short trek out to Rotherhithe village, especially if you are an American there for Thanksgiving. Make reservations and food order in advance for the holiday meals. The Mayflower is about a 40-min walk from Tower Bridge, but the tube or bus will also get you there and save you some steps. The great thing about many London pubs have CENTURIES of history. In the Rotherhithe district (near the center of London), The Mayflower pub is not just the best pub in a 10 km radius, it's a big piece of history as the Mayflower took off for their journey to the new world left from Rotherhithe in 1620. Back in the 1800's, seafarers docking at Rotherhithe with little time to spare were able to order a pint and a postage stamp at The Mayflower (formerly The Spread Eagle). They are still the only pub licensed to sell US & UK postage stamps. Now the most important part: The Food. Fish & Chips -- Beer Battered Haddock in their Scurvy Ale Batter with Pea Mint Puree & Tartare Sauce is amazing. Don't forget to start with their cheese plate -- of 3 to 11 English, Irish & Welsh Cheeses, with Artisan Crackers & Chutney. The atmosphere is great (come early to get an outside table on the Thames!). It's busy (for good reason) ... you're going to come earlier than peak times to get one of their outdoor seating on the Thames. What a view! read more

Maybe it's just in my "blood" to do this, but the night before I left the United Kingdom this time around, I decided to do what my "ancestors" did (they did not emigrate from this part of Europe) and go drinking in The Mayflower. And while I did not board a ship to go to America, I did have a time that will make it hard to forget my last night in England. Plus, if I had a cheese plate here before trying to leave in 1620, I would have just stayed and dealt with religious intolerance. Probably. The fancy and rich cheeses here are numerous and their cheese plate presentation is perfect. I had just enough crackers to match the star of the show. And the menu lets the diner know exactly how the cheese was made. I had no idea how many cheeses were not purely vegetarian but this information allowed me to have nothing made in a meat stock. Of course people can't survive on cheese alone so I also ordered one of the vegetarian platters (something the 17th century would not understand) with some delicious hummus and falafel to accompany my brewpub specific beer. Said beer was all ales, so not necessarily my cup of tea, but they were decent. The decor is fantastic (and eating and imbibing by the traditional candlelight of the pub is surprisingly fun) and so it feels like you're getting a history lesson while getting a bit tipsy. One thing I do have to say though is that when I tried to dine here on a Saturday, despite being off the main tourist path, the place was packed. I had to come back the next day to even find a table to get all of this delicious food. So it seems to be popular enough with the locals that I was shocked it even needed a Groupon for its delicious fare. The next time I'm south of the Thames in London, I'll definitely call on this pub again. read more
