Very smallpub in London owned by a young couple. They celebrated 5 years ownership in April. Had a beer and vodka tonic. Ordered samosas and the Sunday special,chicken roast. The samosas were good but spicy. I really liked the hosin like sauce drizzled over them. We had one order of roast, planning a late lunch snack before dinner. We had gone to Burrough market but it was packed. To say the least, I'm glad we got one plate. the chicken. breast was huge. More than enough for two people. It was covered in a red curry gravy,slightly spicy. It came with roasted potatoes and broccoli, and a Yorkshire pudding. Plenty. We left a couple potatoes and broccoli on the plate. Surely this will now be one of my regular haunts in the area?! Service was just blinding, like I genuinely can't remember the last time I received service like that. From the owner to the chef. Quirky and good selection of drinks. Food was yummy, only had nibbles but will report back on more as will definitely be returning for mains etc. Cute little rooftop patio place for a couple of tables, and peaceful there too! Just had a thoroughly enjoyable afternoon here and couldn't get over how much they went out of their way so you can carry on, enjoy and have fun. Top top banana. read more

This place was awesome! Walked in during a Rugby World Cup game on a big screen, and was greeted by who I believe are the owners. They were incredibly attentive to every one at the bar, at time multi tasking to make sure everyone was taken care of. The beer and drink selections were plentiful, and the vibe in the pub was amazing. Hope to return again and if you're in the neighborhood I would definitely check it out and have a pint or 6. read more

I'm still dreaming about this meal. I was at the end of almost 3 weeks living out of a backpack. And was spending a leisurely last couple days before my flight out of Gatwick at the backpackers hostel nearby. I was going cheap and dirty, two pairs of clothes etc and didn't have much of a London budget. Anyways, going after nightfall and unfamiliar with the area, my initial thought was...should I go down this random side street? And then there's this little building that looks like the only one that survived when newer places were built. And inside is the most charming and laid back pub. Made even better by the fact I could immediately tell it was family owned which seems like an increasing rarity. I was fresh off the train and wanted a pint first only to see (it had been 10 years since I'd been in London, where I worked at a pub that only served Sam Smith's) that there was a confusing variety of local brews on tap. The bartender let me taste a few. Very friendly and knowledgable. Anyways, now to the food. It's Anglo-Indian which, as it turns out, is a winning mix. It's mainly focused on a variety of small bites to share and a few pies. As a solo traveler, I had my eyes set on pie and went with chicken tikka. I am STILL dreaming about this pie! It was simple. It was large. It was simply perfectly well done. Just a little spicy but with really complex slow cooked flavors. And the pastry...buttery and flakey and OMG. My first thought was, after a long travel day, OH I'll never eat all this! By the end, I was using the chips to soak up every last bit of curry. Honestly, I wanted to eat there a second time but missed the dinner times after a long day. So it was my first meal on this last trip to London and my last pint for my last night. Luckily, I plan on returning in the spring and this pub is on my list! read more

This pub has a really nice feel to it. The music is great but nothing I had ever heard before. The lighting and decor is good too. The have cornish ales and the selection of pieminister pies looked interesting, shame I arrived at the wrong time of day to enjoy them. Has a big screen for sport but doesn't feel like the kind of place I'd watch a match, but I don't mean that in a bad way. I know a few pubs around Borough station but this is definately the best I've found so far! read more

We spent 4 nights in London and our flat was right by the Borough train station. My girlfriend and I quickly made this our local pub, with a wide variety of craft beers on tap. They even turned over a few kegs in the short time we were there! Great atmosphere with live music and an attentive staff. Such a great pub - £3.60 for a lovely beer, free papers to read, a nice ambience, plenty of tables. It's rare to find anywhere this unspoilt in London. A great selection of beers too - including Meantime, Brew Dog, Brooklyn Lager and Sierra Nevada. Definitely on the list to revisit. read more

Went here today for a midday pint. The bar was about half the size I assumed it would be from the outside. I ordered a pint of Meantime Pale Ale, and was told before it was poured that it was £5.30. I thought this was a nice touch, especially if one wasn't aware of the going price for Greenwich's finest. I am aware. They must have had situations with the unaware to make them tell you beforehand. Took my pint upstairs to the terrace, a very small place, but great when I and my friend were the only ones there. I must come here when it is busier, though I am sure I will still love it. read more

This is a real find. A 'real' pub on the outskirts of borough market. We sat upstairs with the rest of the Saturday night crowd...young enough to be our children but seemingly chilled about us oldies being there. We enjoyed beer, Pieminister pies (complete with mash and mushy peas) all topped off with a short but sweet set of live music. What a great way to spend a Saturday night in London. read more

This is a proper lovely little pub with a feel good hippy vibe. Friendly staff, great live music, and pieminister pies (which I'm not a huge fan of). Beer, real ale and a couple of tasty house cocktails but nothing fancy. I'm told by a friend their wine selection is good but I haven't tried any myself yet. It's a petite space not much bigger than my open plan kitching / living room and on Friday and Saturday nights it's standing room only. Plenty of seats, tables and a comfy sofa. They've also got a bookshelf which people tend to help themselves to and return when finished or replace it with a different book. A big pile of board games made this a favorite place of mine to spend a lazy Sunday. The Glad showcase live folk and blues bands with a reputation for excellence. So good in fact in the summer you'll find people dancing in the street outside. Dog friendly if your pooch is well behaved. read more

A brilliant pub. With a great band who live upstairs. I think they own the pub, I'm not sure. But they're called something like mystic mood orchestra or something and they were fab. It's very out of the way, if you come from London Bridge as we did. It was quite a shock to realise how close to Borough station this place is so get off there instead. It's the perfect pub for sitting outside and catching up with friends. But without the band it might just be an average pub so I'd find out when they were on next. They do beer out of cans and cheap white wine, but you'll have a great time if you want somewhere of the beaten track. read more

Loved this place! went there on a Sunday evening, it was PACKED! but lovely! Upper floor if you want to have a chat over a drink or a meal Ground floor for A-MA-ZING live music in an intimate environment. If you love Live Music, it's the place to go, the people that go there are really into the music, so once the music starts, the room is in complete silence just to listen to it :) will be going there more often, for sure! Came here during a business trip after seeing a few promising reviews. Everything lived up to the hype. This is a really friendly pub that does a nice job balancing its history with a modern vibe. All of the local patrons were nothing short of awesome, and the food was top notch (best 'pub' fare I've had in London). Highly recommend the wings and cod fingers. Fantastic (other) favourite pub in SE1. Er, yeah, they do Minster pies, but that isn't why people come here! They come to "the biggest small venue in the World" for groovy landlord Dan, the littlest hobo dog, the teeny roof garden, the guest beers, the live music, the tuba on the window ledge, the upright piano, the Glad CD and everything that makes up an astonishing thriving hub of a pub. Did I mention the live music? Yes, they have an ace live music policy and surprise acts on at really short notice (Smoke Fairies etc) plus monthly gigs by the house band The Moon Music Orchestra have to be seen to be believed... I won't attempt to describe how a seven piece band can play in a pub this size, just go, and go early if you want a seat x read more

this pub is so great. small, quaint, quirky (they have a shrine to their dog...that alone won me over). they put on regular live music, and it's always free. i went because my friend's friend was playing there, although sadly i had another gig to go to so i didn't get to stay for the performance. good selection of beers, ales and wines. my viognier wasn't chilled enough which is my only criticism. they serve pieminister pies, which i have on good authority are delicious, and seem to be a most excellent food of choice in a traditional boozer such as this. i'll be checking out outcoming musicians and heading back here soon for sure. read more

The Gladstone is a very well-known pub in Borough right by the tube off the high street. It's small and intimate with a very friendly staff. Although I normally wouldn't go to a bar alone for a drink, I did go once at the Gladstone and felt completely comfortable. The staff was very interactive and laid back. This is a real neighbourhood find, you feel as though you are seated in your neighbours front room which has a bar fitted at one end. This place is tiny and gets rammed at weekends and most week nights too. Friendly staff and a variety of different bottled and cask beers. Occasional bands but more a boozer that you can happily wile away an evening or alternatively a Sunday. Great staff, board games and if you are waiting for a late date a number of books to amuse you. read more

Found Gladstone on Yelp while heading to HMS Belfast on our last day in town. There were only 9 reviews at the time but they were legit. Super friendly bartender steered us in the direction of 2 daily specials (Chicken kara age & Venison boti kebab) both included beer. Another classic buried away in a side street! Well worth searching out. I was invited to a birthday party in their upstairs room there a few weeks ago. There was a band playing in the main bar on the ground floor, a squatty gypsy band made up of art violin music grads with dreads and stuff but they were excellent and the place was packed. I had a very good pie and a couple of pints of Doombar which is a favourite of mine! I didn't make it to the roof garden, because it was winter and the smokers had claimed it anyway... ...but I'll be back !!! read more
