This place is impressive. Basically it is a war memorial that contains the names of all those who were killed in battle (though apparently not those who died of their wounds behind the lines). It is a huge gate built into the Ypres wall, and it pretty impressive. Inside the walls are engraved with the names of all the fallen, but what is most impressive is that every day at 8:00 pm they have the 'last post' ceremony, which is basically a cut down dawn service. The fact that they have performed this ceremony every day since the gate was built in the 20s (though when Ypres was occupied by the Germans they performed the ceremony in England, however as soon as the city was liberated, and while they were still fighting in the streets, the started the ceremony up again) is dedication. It is definitely something to experience if you are on Ypres, though I recommend that you get there early (around 7:15) and stand on the southern side as well. read more
