The city was incorporated in 1784 and incorporated as a town in 1639. There are approximately 25,000 residents. It's a tourist hot spot in the summer because of the historic mansions, beautiful vista, and sailing. No wonder why the wealthy built mansions and spent their summers there during the 20th century. A notable landmark is the Newport bridge, which connects the city with neighboring towns and cities. The city also has one of the highest amount of colonial homes in the nation; if you're a history lover like me, that's pretty cool. A couple of popular events include the St. Patrick's parade and Newport Folk Festival; always a fun time at those events. Cliffwalk is a 3.5-mile trail along the shoreline. Overall, a historic and beautiful city, it's a must see in the summer; put your walking shoes on and just explore the city.

This was the 11th one I visited. My friend and I came on a Saturday morning. I don't think they have a parking lot, but we found street parking right by the entrance. It reminded me more of an admin building when I walked in. To the left is a book sale, and to the right are the stairs to the main floor. There were lots of happy kids in the children's section. Down the hall, they have the walls lined with lots of information, including subsidized tickets to different events and places including the bird sanctuary nearby. They also have an extensive and well diversified library of tools and equipment to loan for a week including sporting gear, home repair tools, yard tools, games, and even a telescope. I was impressed. On my way out, I also saw a an ad for a free account to Mango through the library, which is a language learning platform (perfect for my journey to learning French).

Did you know that Newport is the home of Salve Regina University and Naval Station Newport which houses the United States Naval War College, the Naval Undersea Warfare Center, and a major United States Navy training center? Now you do. Did you know the Tennis Hall of Fame is located in Newport? How about that the Newport Country Club hosted the first US Open and the first US Amateur? Or that Newport is known as the sailing capitol of the United States? Or that John Fitzgerald Kennedy and Jacqueline Bouvier were married in St. Mary's Church in Newport? Or that the movie "The Great Gatsby" (1974 edition) was filmed in Newport? Or that on Bellevue Avenue is home to some of the most opulent, amazing mansions in the world? Or that The Whitehorse Tavern, the oldest pub in continuous service in the United States, can be found here? All of this and I have not even begun to mention the beaches, the great restaurants, the Newport Jazz Festival, the fun - and there is a lot of fun to be had in Newport. If you are a RI resident and have EZ Pass, the fee is not bad, but for non residents, it will cost $4 each way.

You'll see scores of shops, restaurants, and bars on both sides of the street, and you'll even smell the ocean, as you're but a few blocks away from the water. You can spend hours and hours just strolling, people watching and window shopping. We must have seen 20 different bars and restaurants, a dozen coffee shops, and maybe a hundred stores selling everything from low end touristy stuff to high end clothing and furniture. We picked up an oil painting from the Seaside Art Gallery, a chocolate toffee apple and some chocolates from Kilwin's of Newport, and two long sleeve Tee Shirts and some souvenir postcards for the grandkids from the House of Scrimshaw. We parked in a municipal lot a block behind and perpendicular to Thames.

I love having it because you don't need a timed ticket then and can visit at any time with a guest, so as an historian, I love it. The Breakers is probably my favorite of the mansions to visit, it's so big and expansive and beautiful. Every room you walk into, your jaw just drops a little more. I think my favorite season to visit is around. Christmas, but visiting now in spring and summer it's still really magical and beautiful to see. The library is probably my favorite room here, the light green is just gorgeous. Make sure to give yourself a good 20 minutes in the gift shop too, it's very expansive.

The mansion itself is beautiful. The artwork is stunning, the interior is incredibly well preserved, and the ocean views are amazing. But still, my walk in closet and bathroom is bigger than their bathroom/closets, so take that, Vanderbilts! The admission price was very high. And really, don't these guys have have enough money already? And after all that, but I was a little disappointed that visitors are only allowed on the first two floors and the basement. It would've been nice to see the upper levels as well. Thankfully parking is free but the lot is relatively small considering how many people visit. Overall, I'm glad I visited. The history, architecture, artwork, and views made it a worthwhile experience and I'd recommend it to anyone visiting Newport.
