I need a compounded medicine because the standard version has peanut oil, which I'm allergic to. They gave me the standard version in the little orange bottle that looks just like my normal compounded bottle. I called because the pills looked funny, they assured me it was fine. I pressed that I have a peanut allergy and they called me back later to say, sorry, they did give me the peanut version because they misunderstood the prescription from my doctor. I had to go back and exchange it--so glad I didn't take it! Since then I've had several experiences where they say my prescription will be ready the next day and it isn't actually ready when I come to pick it up several days later. I don't understand how this place stays in business, and I feel very anxious about all the medicine I get from them if they're this disorganized. Looking for another compounding pharmacy even if I have to go farther away for it. read more

This Modern Chemist just has one compounder. They didn't notified anyone that their other pharmacist left in November. When I called to refill my medication they informed me that it would be ready 5 days later. They are okay with leaving people without their medicine for 5 days. When I told them I would break out in hives from the lack of medicine and asked to escalate my concerns to someone, the woman on the phone laughed and said " it's this number". Could care less amount who they are NOT helping! read more

I was in here Wednesday 1/26, approximately 6:30 pm. The cashier at that time was so lovely, definitely compliments to her! They had everything I was looking for, really nice layout as well. It's fabulous to see a local Chemist vs a chain-& they had more product satisfactory than the chain! If I had any critique I wish they were open an hour later than current closing time. Four hours before we had to catch a flight my daughter was diagnosed with strep throat and needed antibiotics. We went to Modern Chemist and they only had 5 days supply, which wasn't going to cover our 10-day trip. But instead of fobbing us off another pharmacy they called their DUMBO location, discovered they had more supply there, and had it taxi'd over, all within 30 minutes. We made our flight because of their exceptional customer service. So helpful and so friendly! My family has gone to Modern Chemist for years and year and I feel like this story encapsulates why we are so loyal. We moved to the area during the height of the pandemic and quickly found that one of the luckiest features of our new neighborhood was this pharmacy. They are everything you want in a pharmacy: anticipating your needs, super efficient, and always going the extra mile. They know my whole family by sight now, and will hand us our prescriptions as soon as we get to the window, charging the cc we have saved on file, circling on the receipt how much has gone toward our deductible or how much insurance has covered, without us even needing to say our names. When I need a refill, I don't have to wait through an annoying phone tree--I can simply text Jonathan and he'll let me know when it'll be ready for pickup. But what I always gush about is that time the pharmacy dealt with my stupid insurance company on the phone for 2 HOURS because of the company's dumb misunderstanding about preauthorization and what my kid's doctor had prescribed. Carlos, the pharmacist, is one of the nicest, most helpful people I've ever met. I'm from Michigan, and Carlos spent weeks dealing with my insurance company to try to get everything squared away. In the meantime, he gave me my prescriptions for free so that I wouldn't go without or have to try another pharmacy. When my insurance finally went through, I paid him for my backlogged months. Beyond this amazing response to my debacle, Carlos remembers my name, asks me about school and work, knows what I need when I go in, and was so sweet when I went in with a sinus infection and a prescription for a Z-Pack--giving me recommendations for additional things that would make me feel better faster. If you have any prescription issues you need taken care of, or just want someone sweet to fill your prescriptions, Carlos is the guy. read more

It's so rare for people to go above and beyond their job lately. The pharmacists here have come to my aid multiple times, and it's so appreciated during pandemic times and the burdens of teetering insurance. The pharmacist Jonathan saw I had a prescription order for a medicine with an extremely high copay I was not aware of, and contacted me to make sure I wanted to go ahead with the order. I was then able to message my doctor and get a substitute prescription for more than half the price off. I have lived in Park Slope for almost 2 decades. Par is my favorite pharmacist here in the Nabe, and in my whole life. Unfortunately in the last year I had some medical issues nothing serious, however, frustrating. Par was better then the doctors I went to. They have been wonderful to me. I have never written a Yelp review before but I'm so thrilled with The Modern Chemist that here I am. First- of all the pharmacist so kind. He's really a nice guy to deal with. Second - they can add flavoring to kids medications to make it easier for mom to administer. This has been a life saver to me as I'm due for a baby any day and don't have the strength to battle my four year old bec he doesn't like the regular taste.... (The spider-man sticker was a nice touch too) Third- it's a compounding pharmacy so he can make most medications into suppositories which is great when you are too nauseous to keep down your medication..... After being pretty blatantly mislead by the pharmacist at a convenient branch of a national pharmacy about the immediate availability of my medication, I visited three independent pharmacies in Manhattan, two indies in Brooklyn, and called the indie in my hometown, and no one could (or would?) fill my prescription. By the time I got to The Modern Chemist, I almost didn't go in--why bother? Fifteen minutes later, I walked out with a full prescription and a tucked into a complementary Modern Chemist tote bag. "I've handed that prescription over and had it handed back about six times today," I told the pharmacist. "That's six times too many," he said. He made one phone call to verify my scrip and that was that. I'm leaving off one star a) I don't think I'd do other shopping here. The retail selection is limited and the prices high, though they do seem to carry some high end salon brands that might be somewhat exclusive; and b) Their hours are limited, especially on the weekend, so plan ahead. read more

I'd agree with some of the other comments that I wouldn't necessarily shop at the convenience store itself, but if you need a compounding pharmacist to make your meds, Carlos should be your first and last stop. I just starting coming to the pharmacy at Modern Chemist in the Fall. I have a serious health condition and I have prescriptions filled every week. I was having the hardest time working with other pharmacys in park slope. Thankfully a friend recommended Modern Chemist. My life has been changed. They are the nicest people. They know me and my son by name. If I have any questions they spend time explaining all my medication. I have lived in NYC for over 10 years, I have always wanted to find a pleasant pharmacy. Now not only have I found that, I have found people who actually care about me and want to help me feel better. Par is one of the managers (I think) at the 7th Ave location, he is the best. One afternoon he called me wondering why I was getting a cream version of my meds filled. My doctors had called in the wrong meds for me! Par my pharmacist is the one who caught his mistake!! Start using this pharmacy if you haven't . I was walking past the 4th Ave location with two prescriptions that I was going to fill later, but I wanted a drink so I walked in thinking oh I'll drop these off and come back later. Ha they filled them in 5 minutes! This pharmacy is the best. read more

They care about my family and our needs- while my two young children screamed bloody murder today someone on the phone was patient with me, figured out what I needed and found me a coupon online to save us $155 on a much-needed prescription...then they delivered the medicine we needed immediately. Al, the owner, is a wonderful man who cares about his customers and selling high-quality products. An unbelievable experience-- in the worst way. Carlos lost my prescription, told me to come back, I came back 3 separate times and each time he said "oh.. right, I was supposed to find it" with this bizarrely smug/joke-y attitude. I appreciate that he was trying to be nice, but it was a huge inconvenience for me to return 3 times and his attitude--this weird playfulness, was really annoying. Then he had the balls to call me, not once, but TWICE at my work, telling the person who answered that it was "Carlos, from the pharmacy". I really am not an uptight person, but... maybe I don't need my coworkers to know that I'm on any kind of medication? After the two phone calls, I was pissed, let me tell you. THEN!!! He came into my work (I'm a waiter) with his family and some friends and had the seemingly insane nerve to say, "Oh hey, I finally found your prescription" in front of everyone. (Mind you, he found my prescription literally 2 months after I had dropped it off and he never filled it). I don't have health insurance, so I had to pay out of pocket to see my doctor again and get ANOTHER prescription to replace the one that had been lost. So in summary, losing a prescription with absolutely NO regard for patient privacy. I literally cannot believe this experience I had. I mean, I could have/maybe should have reported him for all of this. read more

My husband had just been discharged from the care facility he was recovering from major leg surgery at with a handful of prescriptions and a final dose of pain meds. It was up to me to get him home, up 3 flights of stairs, and go to the pharmacy and back in 1 hour in time for his next pain medication dose. Ok, no problem, I thought. Got to his typical (unmentioned) pharmacy, waited in line for 20 minutes while nervously checking my watch. Got to the front of the line and was told with a shrug, "Oh, we don't have those. It will take a week to order." My heart dropped. He was going to to be in excruciating pain in less than an hour if I didn't find these pain meds. I frantically called the (unmentioned) care facility he had been at, but all they told me was to call back later. So I began my trek. I laced up my tennis shoes and started running. I went to pharmacy #2; "nope, we don't have those". Pharmacy #3 "nah, we have to order them". Pharmacy #4, 5, 6... Nada. Then I arrived at The Modern Chemist; sweaty, out of breath and a little teary-eyed. I waved the prescription at them and blurted (perhaps too loudly), "Do you have these??!!" The calm and gentle pharmacist took the prescription, looked through the organized shelves and pulled out everything I had searched through all of Brooklyn for! He was very patient with me (as I must've looked pretty crazy!), and gave me helpful suggestions and care instructions. He didn't have enough to fulfill the entire order, but was able to give me enough to get my hubby through the rest of the day, and ordered the balance for next day delivery. The entire staff was so kind, and has helped to answer all of my questions about his medications and his condition with knowledge and compassion. They continue to ask how my husband is doing every time I come in. I will never go to another pharmacy and I can't express enough how great of a place this is! read more

PHARMACIST CARLOS IS AMAZING. The chain pharmacies in BK and the city are the worst. I've had pharmacists rush me out, give me the wrong meds, shout my personal prescription information across the store, and make me wait hours to fill something in stock. None of that happens here. None. Modern Chemist's pharmacist Carols is amazing. I've never felt comfortable asking a pharmacist questions (seriously do you want to talk to the pharmacists at Rite Aid down the street?), but I ask him things, he is really helpful. Even when I'm not getting a prescription, I get his advice on OTCs. He totally remembers me, treats me like a person and a neighbor. He's filled things in 10 minutes that Rite Aid down the street told me would take 2-3 hours to fill. Unless he has to get it shipped, it's filled in 15 minutes or less. I needed a scrip filled, transferred from a different pharmacy, and I think maybe even expired. I couldn't even remember any info about old Dr. had originally filled it---address, etc. Carlos took it all in stride, and got my script filled in a few hours. I can't recommend this pharmacy enough!!! The rest of the store is fine, some of the stuff (soap, etc.) is kinda pricey, but it's Park Slope, so yeah. Transfer all your scrips here, really. read more

My doctor called in a prescription and conveniently forgot to mention that it was going to cost me $500 since my insurance didn't cover it. Not only did Modern Chemist call me right away to let me know, but they promised they would call my Doctor & health insurance to get it taken care of. I did absolutely nothing, and a few days later, I got a call that I could pick up my prescription at the end of the week for $50. Later, Tiffany did me a solid by switching my prescription to the 4th Ave location when she realized I'd be picking up another prescription there anyway. A+ customer service. read more

UPDATED IN RESPONSE: Unfortunately I had a poor experience. I chose modern chemist since it's close to my home. My doc called in a prescription on Friday and I received a call that they didn't have it, offering it for next week but I needed it immediately. After they kindly made some calls they guaranteed it by Saturday at 12:30p, I agree saying I will deal with it for a night but was not happy about it. I show up Saturday, they can't find a prescription at all. THE SAME GENTLEMAN I SPOKE TO ON FRIDAY WAS THERE AND I EVEN SPOKE W HIM DIRECTLY IN PERSON. After this confusion they realize a second profile was created for me and that the medication didn't arrive. Blank stares and I asked when to come back, they said they will follow up but I never heard from them. 4p I call back and THE SAME GENTLEMAN I SPOKE WITH INITIALLY AND IN PERSON EARLIER THAT DAY said he would call to track the package and get back to me. No phone call, they close, closed on Sunday and I got to suffer the entire weekend. Here we are on Tuesday and they call me that my prescription was in- seriously? I can't get there at this point since I am at work all week. I explained my frustration and didn't get much of a reaction aside from a timid sorry okay and have a nice day. To me, this was mridiculous, prescriptions are important to people and necessary, glad this wasn't one that needed to keep me alive! read more

This pharmacy used to be great. I'm not sure if it's changed hands, but for the past 6 months they have continually screwed up my one prescription I get monthly. This particular medicine can be out of stock regularly, so I'm very on top of it. I asked them to please re-fill the prescription this month and to put it aside as when I called they had the full prescription available. Went in to pick it up, they hadn't filled it and only half the prescription was there. They said they'd have to call in for the other half that will get there Monday. I don't live in the neighborhood and have to drive there. This is the third time they have said they would fill the prescription on the spot and hold for me and did not. They always apologize but there is a strange miscommunication. I'm not sure what happens after we hang up the phone when they just said they would fill it that moment. read more

This is my EIGTH year with The Modern Chemist...Carlos is the BEST. believe I was one of Carlos's first clients, and intend to be with him and now Par and Tiffany forever. Three years ago I moved out to Flatbush by Brooklyn College where there are a plethora of pharmacies, but it was never even a thought that I would switch pharmacies (and I'm on several medicines for many issues, so seems like I am there all the time!) Carlos treated me as though I was his only customer, and bringing Par and Tiffany aboard, due to his great and well-deserved success and opening of a second store could not have been better choices. I feel well-cared for and never worry about whether my medicines will interact negatively or not because I know The Modern Chemist is watching out for me. Carlos eve was concerned about a high dosage of a medication a doctor prescribed for me, and before filling it called the doctor personally, so he could understand my illness and why the high dosage was necessary...now that is not only service, but the kind of caring and compassion you get from all the pharmacists there. All who work at The Modern Chemist treat you with so much kindness and it is evident they all are VERY happy working there. As you can tell, after eight years, I could give example after examples as to why I stay with them even having moved so far away, but bottom line...this is THE pharmacy to go to, and who gets so excited about a pharmacy unless they are the BEST! read more
