My husband recently passed away. Placing his obituary online was a nightmare. The website was hard to navigate and no one was available to speak to on the phone. We have been long time subscribers to the Modesto Bee. This past summer, we decided to switch from a paper version of the paper to an E-edition. We had always paid by personal check for the subscription. We decided to let our subscription run out and didn't think there would be any problem. We never signed or agreed to any notice that would have extended our paper subscription. We were on vacation for a few days and returned to find the paper was still being delivered. We thought it was just a bookkeeping error, but the delivery continued. It finally stopped and we thought that was the end of it. A few weeks later we got a notice from a collection firm that we owed the Bee $229. We never asked that the paper be delivered beyond the expiration date of our subscription. We paid the company as we didn't want our credit score affected. We were not happy with these deceptive and questionable business practices! David Oltman read more

I would give minus stars! I opened a p. O box in Salida. I'm on chemo and do not check mail regularly. I pay to receive mail not a box full of junk mail. I called modestobee twice and was told I would be removed from their list. Included is a pic of 2 1/2 weeks of junk. Several times my mail was stuck/ripped as a result die to over stuffing. If I could give them negative stars I would. I don't take the paper anymore since they would never deliver the paper any further than my driveway and it would often get wet from our sprinklers. Since then, I have often received their ad bundle on my driveway. I have called and asked nicely for them to stop but it continues. I call and it stops for a little while, but then starts again. Last time I asked how many times I had called and asked them to stop and they said "over 9". My father, who has Alzheimer's, has been continuously harassed by the staff through soliciting phone calls and mail. He canceled his subscription and they continued calling every single day trying to get him to give his credit card information. I then contacted them and explicitly stated to not contact him. They STILL will not stop. He has never had any outstanding bills. He does NOT want your paper. The next step is the Better Business Bureau. Purchased a 52 week subscription Sunday only through groupon. My only saving grace is that the Bee doesn't have my credit card information. I purchased on 9/15/2017 and every 3 months I get robocalls stating I owe money and my service is going to be stopped. I'm done, this is CRAP service! We called to inform them about my Grandfathers passing with a death certificate included. The month following we received a collections notice from A.R.M Solutions for The Modesto Bee against my Grandfather. When he was alive he always paid for a certain amount of months in advance by check. Yet, he continues to receive collection notices in the mail for The Modesto Bee. We went into my Grandpas bank statements and found that he did pay for a 6 month subscription for the newspaper. We provided that statement to them, but they continue to send notices? read more

I have been a long time subscriber (30 years) of the Bee. During that time period I have had to deal with a lot of changes, but some how we always got through it. The paper has dramatically reduced the number of pages (not sure how the delivery person can throw the paper because it is so light.) They have eliminated the Saturday edition and of course there has always been a price issues. Every year they try to raise the price by 80 to 120 percent which is absolutely ridiculous. I usually am able call and come to some sort of agreement. The price has gone from $106 in 2019 to this year at $339 so over a four year period it has gone up 220%. That's 50 plus % per year. They tried to raise it 80% this year and would not budge on that price. I could live with 15 to 20% but that was a no go so needless to say I am leaving the Bee after 30 years. When I went on modbee.com to post an obituary to be printed in the paper, I certainly did not think it would be free. I chose a modest template (one column of text and a small picture), with a price "starting at $46". As soon as I typed in my mother-in-law's name, the price jumped to $106. After typing in basic information like funeral/viewing dates and times, the price jumped to $814 for a 3 day run. I shortened the run to 2 days and it still cost $524. My father-in-law is a 79 year old vet on a fixed income. The Bee's pricing is outrageous. They are clearly taking advantage of those who are grieving and at their most vulnerable. We will all be canceling our subscriptions. *Response to the Bee's comment: Thank you for the offer, but I don't need assistance with my account. What I needed was to run a short obituary at an affordable price. I had even called the obituary department to ask if the price quoted online was correct. As I stated in my review, I chose a modest template that literally said "starting at $46." Final cost $814??? In addition, long time customers paying nearly $900 a year yet new subscribers pay a fraction of that price? No wonder so many of my friends and colleagues are canceling their subscription. read more

I agreed to subscribe to the Modesto Bee after being contacted by phone on a promotional deal. I was told I would receive a $50 dining certificate as part of the promotion. They said it would be with the delivery of the bee in an envelope. After contacting them repeatedly and being told that it was coming I finally called to cancel. They kept me going for over a year. I canceled the subscription today and was told sorry nothing we can do about that. This was a scam and I want my subscription money I paid refunded! read more

My subscription renewal was due May, 20, 2022. On May 19 I renewed online, however, decided against it right away. I don't need the extra expense at this time. I tried calling, but because I was calling from my cell phone I was transferred to a chat line. After 45 minutes of not getting an agent I emailed customer service. They're telling me I can't cancel until this subscription is up in June 2023. I tried explaining, but to no avail. I call almost every day to report we did not get our paper again; their recorded message says they notice we have had several problems with delivery and will report to the manager in our area. BEWARE POTENTIAL SUBSCRIBERS - DO NOT SUBSCRIBE - SEE MY FACTS BELOW I have been a Modesto Bee customer for over 40 years. May 2020. I cancelled my subscription due to the paper continually not being delivered. I would call and the next day receive the day before's paper. Then in November 2021 my husband went to a race and at a kiosk signed us back up for the Modesto Bee. Things were wonderful until May 30, 2022, when our carrier (Christie Baker) had to leave for medical reasons. Now, once again my papers are not arriving, until the following day. This has occurred for four days in a row. I have called Modesto Bee everyday directly and they apologized, but to no avail. I have contacted our present carrier (Janet Welch 209-850-6732) everyday also. She yelled at me yesterday stating she was new and had so many papers to handle. This morning said she would have me a paper at my home within one hour. That was about 10 AM. this morning. It is now l:30 PM and I still have no paper. Now, when I attempt to call her, the phone goes directly to an answering machine. I have called the Modesto Bee Delivery Department each day also. They tell me they will have someone call me back. After four days of no paper, and with calls having been made requesting a return call, I still have not yet received even one call back. Please do not think about subscribing to the Modesto Bee for home delivery. I do not get my paper on Sunday's In fact I only get my paper 5 days out of the 7 if I am lucky. My neighbors I see get their paper. I call Modesto Bee customer service, I get told that they will send another Sunday paper which I never received and they will credit my account which I never see. Save your money get the only line paper. I have been a customer since 1997 and the customer service and home delivery service is horrible. Just a disgrace:( read more

After several phone calls and the most ridiculous responses I have taken to Yelp. Every year for the past few years the price of the paper has continued to climb over 100 dollars a year. My 94 year old parents have been getting the paper since 1960 and yet they refuse to give them a discount!! Not a loyalty discount senior discount.. nothing! Please do not subscribe to this paper as it is not the same as it was when I started 35 years ago. They have lost their ability to find carriers that can deliver faithfully. I quit receiving the paper earlier this year because of delivery issues. Then was called a month ago and promised that the issues where fixed and that my paper would be here every day. Well if it does get delivered maybe twice a week it is usually on the street or across the street or most of the time I am looking for something that was never delivered. Place a call to a foreign country for customer service, continue trying to find a number for maybe a local agent, have fun. All of my neighbors have quit the paper and I will as soon as this subscription is complete. After months of erratic delivery and missing papers, the Bee officially advise they were stopping delivery to my area, tried to convert me "automatically" to online only. When I protested in a long call to customer "service", the overseas rep claimed to have obtained authorization to process a prorated refund...5 calls (all agreeing the refund was requested and all but last one saying it was "authorized") and 4 months later still NO REFUND!!!! I have had delivery issues in the past but was assured that it would not be a problem this time. If it was, I could just call and cancel. BUYER BEWARE!! Their service center is only open from 8 to 12. I ordered on September 9 and was told to wait a few days to make sure the circulation started; which I patiently did. I waited another week and then tried to call only to discover their very limited hours. I canceled online last week because I had NEVER RECEIVED ONE PAPER!!! I called today to make sure they got the cancellation, which of course they claim they did not. I had to pay $9.32 FOR NOTHING JUST TO GET RID OF THEM!!! I agree with the guy who posted that the entire process from delivery to customer service is horrible. We are going on day 4 of not receiving a paper that we paid for in advance. When you call Dan or Marshall, their reply is: "you want my help or not?" Great attitudes from 2 people that are supposedly in charge of customer service! This is a sham from luring customers and telling them that they will receive a paper, when in fact, they don't even know if their carriers are working, nor do they care. They want their customers to switch to an online Bee. They don't want to deliver the paper anymore to customers. It must make the staff at The Bee to feel good to charge customers in advance and then not follow through with the service they promised. We called customer service, but the lady wasn't able to help us with her reset, so she hung up on us and said she had other customers. I've never had that happen before! In 2015 I purchased a subscription to the Modesto Bee for my daughter, at that time they drove down her road to deliver her paper to her gate. When she re subscribed they refused to drive down a dirt road to my daughter's house. TALK ABOUT NOT PEOPLE ORIENTED. NO WONDER THE MODESTO BEE HAS LOST SEVERAL PEOPLE AS SUBSCRIBERS. I've subscribed to the Bee for decades and finally went to the digital version because of all of the adds. It had may more adds than news! All of the national news is viewed for free on USA Today or dozens of other sites, the local sports is weak, the Bees local news reporters are lazy and/or biased and the the adds still dominate the thing!
