I saw this book store online at Atlas Obscura, a book store built in an old mill. Naturally I had to make a vacation around it. It is relatively isolated, with several shops and eateries in the mill. There is limited parking on top, with more down below and across the street. The entrance to the bookstore is on the middle level. They have so many wonderful used books! The price points are fair, and organized by genre. There is seating available if you want to take a moment to look something over. They also have adorable gifts in tote bags, shirts, magnets, and greeting cards designed by a local artist. If you love book stores, this is a must see! "BOOKS YOU DON'T NEED IN A PLACE YOU CAN'T FIND" :-)

My fiance and I went to explore the bookmill this past weekend, it was definitely worth it! The atmosphere is beautiful, though I wish more people were browsing and exploring the area as well. We encountered a lot of students who were in the middle of studying that gave us dirty looks, but once we went to the lower floors the atmosphere got friendlier! They have such a huge selection of books, it was definitely overwhelming at first glance! I really enjoyed their 98 cent collection, I thought it was a really nice and affordable touch!

So cute! A fun day trip if you live in the area. A lot of books to look through and a lot more food options than I thought!

Charming bookstore in the best location. This place is worth a visit just for it's location. The day I visited it was quite hot. The doors were open and there were floor fans on but it was just too hot for me to sit and linger. However, it's a very interesting store and worth a stop in when in the area.

This is definitely one of the most unique bookstores I've visited. Located in a mill, this rustic and cozy bookshop gives the most beautiful views into the woods and the streams down below. Its a used bookstore so all of the books have reasonable prices. I found some really gorgeous and niche books in there. Beware: someone found a racist/white supremacist book on there, and the owners got rid of it immediately. Perhaps more care should be given to examining the books before putting it on the shelves. However, it is still a gorgeous place!

When traveling in the area, I always stop at the bookmill! It's a wonderful, local bookstore (a repurposed mill, hence the name) specializing in used books. It's definitely a local favorite. Each time I visit, patrons crowd the space, relaxing in the various nooks and crannies throughout the store. It is a popular study spot for students. Book lovers will enjoy browsing the massive selection. The prices are definitely competitive (often beating online offerings), and you have the added bonus of supporting a beloved local shop. The attached cafe also offers a variety of drinks (alcohol included), and the sandwiches are delicious! The tables overlook the adjacent stream. All in all, I definitely recommend checking it out - be aware that you might have some trouble finding parking during their peak hours, but it's worth the wait.

I'm huge fan of bookstores that were once other things. I've been to book barns but never a book mill. It was really cool and I'm glad I checked it out. They have two floors and multiple rooms of used books for sale. Each section is labeled with what genre it is. I was kind of surprised by how small the literature room was, since it seemed to be encompasses all in one nook. In my experience, the literature section is always the biggest. There were tons of people sitting on chairs or on their laptops just hanging out. I could easily see myself spending a day there but unfortunately, I only spent about an hour. It was just enough time to find something so I didnt leave empty handed. They have some other stores in the area: cafe, used cd/dvd store, and art store. They're also situated by water which makes for pretty pictures. Highly recommend for all book lovers to visit!

This slogan is totally accurate and amazing.

Someone could just leave me here all day and I'd be super happy. From what I observed, Montague is a small and quaint little town... and The Book Mill certainly anchors it. We stopped by a few days ago and immediately fell in love! Bibliophiles will rejoice at this multi-story bookstore that lives in a converted windmill. Set amongst foliage, a waterfall, and an adjoining coffee shop and pottery shop, The Book Mill has been one of my favorite places to visit in Western Massachusetts. The shop is full of creaky wooden floors, rocking chair sun-filled reading nooks, quirky antique art and frankly, just SMELLS like books. Their selection is a mixed organization of new and used books. According to my friend, you either really hit it lucky or don't. But even if you don't need to do any book shopping, it's an excellent place to do work. I was astounded by the sense of community on the second floor, which included authors, scholars and students all cohesively doing work amongst the various antique chairs and tables. This was just an absolutely lovely place to spend a fall day. In short, their motto is spot-on: "Books you don't need in a place you can't find." But here's the issue... I NEED ALL THE BOOKS.

Check this out: Yankee Magazine has named The Montague Book Mill as one of the five best used bookstores in New England! I couldn't agree more! http://www.yankeemagazine.com/issues/2013-01/features/best-used-bookstores

Fine, I complied, just wanted to find some books and get going. I did snag two paperbacks I wanted to purchase, but the same "Mask Cop" was having issues with a customer before me, with the cc machine. So I waited, and waited some more, while suffocating wearing a "face diaper". All that for two paperbacks for around $5 and change, unbelievable. The weird thing about today's "Used bookstore trail in MASS" was that the only books I purchased were at the "mask required" shops, maybe that's because the type of people who purchase the books I'm interested in don't put up with this nonsense ? Well, I put up with the nonsense, and walked away with a few Used paperback deals ! I work in the healthcare industry, and have not worn a mask for a good number of years now. Why these bookstores are requiring masks is beyond my understanding, it's a MYSTERY...I just don't do that genre !

As other Yelpers have stated, this store is packed with "inventory of every genre and subject", but just nothing for me. On a side note, I'm almost happy I didn't buy anything here today. The clerk was sitting at a desk right near the front entrance, no acknowledgement of me entering or leaving the place. Would it hurt you to say, "Hello" ? How, in this day and age with stuff everywhere, they pulled that off, I can't tell you, but it's 100% worth following them. It's an amazing inventory - every genre, every subject seems to be represented. They're used books with the asking price a reduced portion of their cover price, and I honestly could have spent hours and hundreds of dollars. They were all books I didn't know what I want (including one book on a haunted Connecticut house that just appeared on a shelf), and I am glad to add to my To Read collection. The outside is guarded by a gargoyle who seems to work for pine cones and a herd of enclosed ducks. The cashier must be a saint to tolerate the quacking, these are opinionated fowl.

Well... Size really isn't everything. This warehouse (no kidding--it's huge) full of used and…read moresometimes rare books caters to every interest and every taste in that interest. The staff is friendly, able, well-read, and genuinely helpful. And many of the books are remarkably affordable with some rare gems going for under $10 and more common books priced under $10 (often $6, $7, or $8!) Size, selection, service and value,--well, what could possibly stand against that? On my latest visit to this bookshop after more than nine months, I actually found little turn-over in much of its well-stocked shelves. Indeed, my experience recalled my last experience. And that, the one before... New titles leapt out me as I scanned books that I remembered languishing on the shelves for... well...years and years. Many of the books, while old, are actually rather common and, for the person interested in a deep dive into a subject, not particularly useful. Indeed, the bookstore suffers one of the most uncomfortable drawbacks in the antiquarian world of used and rare books: stale and/or stagnant stock. Now, that's not to say the place isn't worth the trip--it definitely is! One is almost certain to find something in any agglomeration of books this large and varied, but the compelling book, that genuinely rare and special book, is often elusive in the overwhelming power of the seemingly endless stacks of this shop. Nevertheless, it is a great spot to browse at your leisure and--yes, buy at reasonable prices, but don't expect to find the truly fabulous... Though it could be there... Somewhere... Who knows? Check it out and find out. It's well worth some of your time.
