Joe at Earthworks was the first to respond. I had four outfits visit the job site and provide quotes. Joe's quote came in right in the middle of the pack, and he could schedule me the next week. And he very much seemed to be on the same page for what I was trying to accomplish. He and his crew just departed. They showed up on time, and took the time estimated. They were very careful around my landscaping, and did a great job of the tree work. They have completely cleaned up and left my yard in great shape. My front garden now will get the light it needs, and bigger than that, I now have a year round view of the Blue Ridge from my front porch. I'm very happy with their work, and believe I received very good value for the cost. Very highly recommended.

Smokey Mountain Hardscapes installed permeable pavers on our driveway. It was a challenging job because we are on a very steep lot. There was a slope of over 5 feet from one end of the driveway to the other, and Hurricane Helene tore up what was left of the original gravel driveway until it was about the size of a goat path. Tate and his crew worked diligently, arriving on time and often staying late, to adjust the driveway slope and reinforce it, adding walls and block where needed. When they finished, our driveway was not only stable and sturdy, but beautiful. We took Tate's advice and added two block columns and a set of stone steps with a handrail at the back end of the driveway and we are so glad we did. Tate is a perfectionist and worked extremely hard to make sure that things were even, level, and solid. He communicated well, so we were never surprised by costs. By the way, they also do retaining walls, a much needed element of mountain living. We trust them completely, and plan to hire them again once we get around to putting in a deck in the back yard. We were fortunate that none of the massive oaks and poplars surrounding our house landed on the house, but it left us with a high level of anxiety... Would they fall during the next storm? I met Adam at the park with his dog and kids, and happened to notice the tree company on his shirt. That same day he came to our house and gave us a good overview of the trees that posed risk to our property and which ones he wasn't concerned about. Adam was extremely knowledgable about types of trees, their strength and overall tree health. He gave us a quote that was very reasonable and told us the time frame to get the work done. They brought 2 loads of chips later in the summer. Then, last month a huge, healthy-looking 90' tall tree fell and I learned that 4 others were at risk of hitting buildings if they went down. There were also 2 junky cherry trees and a smaller crab apple to be taken out. Two crews (10 men) started at around 9 AM and finished at 6 PM. One man cleared a long area of brush to be covered with chips, which was my original plan before the tree fell. They ground all of the stumps, the huge root/dirt ball, spread all of the chips and cleaned up as they worked. I am very happy with their work, promptness and pleasantness.

Hired this company to remove some overgrown boxwoods that were covering my windows, plant some…read moresmall boxwoods and azaleas, and clear an area of grass for me to plant flowers. It looked good right afterwards but my first attempt to plant flowers was brutal. Digging a hole was impossible. My vision of planting flowers in that newly cleared area was dashed. Grass was obviously not fully removed before putting landscape fabric and mulch down, and within a very short time, I had grass growing in that area again. I was very disappointed and called multiple times to request that this be corrected. It took a little while for them to come back, (hurricane played a factor,) but they finally did and this time they removed ALL the grass growing underneath the fabric cloth, put down new fabric cloth and fresh mulch, and did an absolutely beautiful job. Although they didn't get it right the first time, they were honorable and came back and made it right so I'm giving them five stars. I also want to mention that one crew found a key I had forgotten I hid in the removed bushes and handed it to me. Pretty amazing!
