(FYI--this review is mostly for Pride Fridays. Can't speak for the other dance nights here, so proceed with that in mind). Have had so many fun nights here in my life. In college, I used to come to the drag shows with my friend over at Eastern (he was pals with many of the old guard that used to perform) and lately, though my clubbing days are mostly over, I've enjoyed going there to see the RuPaul's Drag Race queens that come through town. Most recently I was here for the Willam performance and book signing. It went so smoothly. They had an organized line, a great photo op (no personal phones but they had a professional photographer take snaps that you could pull from their FB page later), and after I was done the super awesome bouncers were nice enough to let me run home to let my dog out (I was so excited about the signing that I left without doing that! Poor pup!) and then come back before the doors opened to the public. Pretty great! Also, the price was fantastic. Tickets to the M&G were $25 but you got a copy of the book, got it signed, a photo, and early entry to the performance. Totally worth it. In general though, the price is great (free before 10pm and then a $5 cover for 21+, $10 for 18-20), the tunes are banging, the atmosphere is fun, the people are great, and the entertainment (lead by Chanel Hunter + Jadein Black) is great. So many awesome local queens perform here as well, so don't sleep on them! Drinks are half priced from 9-11pm and they do late sets (at 12am) for most performers. If you're into that type of entertainment, or just a fun LGBTQ inclusive party night, then be sure to stop in for some fun! read more

OMG this place is a trainwreck! Okay so to start off this review, me and my friend did not realize that this club allowed 18-20 years olds as well as the normal 21+ crowd so when we arrived, we felt like actual grandmas (we are 27-28 years old). The crowd here was super weird and all gathered together in the middle of the dancefloor even though there was plenty of space around them. We compared it to some kind of cult lol it was just a weird energy there. Also, the bathrooms there are so disgusting!! I compared it to a prison bathroom because it was just so nasty and industrial looking (I will upload the pic later). I feel like such a Karen posting this review but I honestly just had such a terrible experience there lol. Doesn't help that the bouncer rudely told my friend to throw out her water bottle that was practically empty even though he failed to notice that she came in with it *eye roll*. What a way to start off our saturday night. Oh, Necto. I first started going to you when I was 18 and you were the Nectarine. You have changed in many ways over the years, but one fact still remains. You're the best dance club that I've been to in Michigan. Located on Liberty Street in Downtown Ann Arbor, Necto is the premier dance club in Michigan. The dancefloor is huge. The sound system, lighting and effects are phenomenal. The bartenders are great. The music is amazing. Overall, it's a great experience. There are several different nights currently: Monday Goth/Industrial, Thursday Techno, Friday Gay Night, Saturday College Night. I have been on all of these days and Friday and Monday are by far the best, but it all depends on the crowd you want. Pride Friday is the best night in my opinion. DJ Mark plays retro and dance favorites in the Red Room in the basement with videos. DJ Jace plays techno and dance upstairs. Before 11pm all drinks are 1/2 off. Jaeger bombs are 3 for $10 all night. Since this is a club, things can get crazy and seedy, but the Necto staff is no nonsense. If you're under 21 don't even think about trying to drink. I don't know how but they'll kick you out in under a minute if you even try to drink. The same goes if you drink too much. If you stumble, fall, or do something that makes it look like you've had too much to drink you'll get kicked out. Even though it sucks for the person getting kicked out, it really makes the experience much better for those that aren't 19 and intoxicated. The worst fight I've ever seen here is a guy through a martini in another guy's face. That's pretty impressive to not see a brawl in all this time. I can't say the same for clubs in Detroit or Pontiac. I wouldn't still be going here if there wasn't something special about this bar. Sure I am glad I don't go every night. Employees are extremely rude, the only people who come to necto are people that get denied from the bars in Ann Arbor because it's not a fun place to be. Whoever they let behind the bar could not make a drink correctly, I ordered a long island ice tea they gave me a rum and coke, and when I confronted them about it, the bartender did not care at all and old me to deal with it. Please revise bouncer ID training. I showed my real ID (21), and no matter what other forms of identification j brought up the bouncer was unable to tell if it was real or not, and ended up sending me away. How do you expect to run a business if the most basic of tasks can't be completed correctly? This experience left a very bad taste in my mouth. Again, please update your training or hire bouncers whose egos aren't so high they can't admit to a mistake. Never experienced this before at any other bar/club! read more

I absolutely love Necto. I've gone from everything to a regular College Thursday to a Zedd & Porter Robinson concert, and each time, the venue doesn't disappoint. Great music, great lights, and a great atmosphere. The best thing about Necto? The Red Room. Each time I go, the music amazes me. I recently went to Recreation on Wednesday and had a blast, as well as MEDMA's Impulse last week. Fantastic, fun environment that's closed off from upstairs and doesn't play "club" music, but just, good music. A must-hear for EDM lovers. The main critiques I hear about Necto aren't complaints about Necto, they're complaints about nightclubs. When you go to one, you should know what to expect, remember that the staff have to deal with drunk people for 6 straight hours and some club-goers are just plain weird. Pros: The Red Room, the themes, outdoor/smoking patio, drink specials, no fights, safe atmosphere, fun bartenders/staff, great concerts, and reduced entry if you get there early. Cons: A few strange individuals clubs always attract, annoying people, and sometimes it's too loud to talk/hear. As a frequent nightclub goer, I recommend bringing friends and earplugs. This is a great place to dance. Large dance floor, two levels, three bars. I have had a lot of fun at Necto when I was crazier and would go out alone. You can definitely have fun if you come here by yourself and make friends. Cheap cover, fun atmosphere, decent music. Monday night is Goth night. I've only been once when I was in a bad place. Had a friend make me look like a goth and went and got inebriated. Monday night is like Halloween. People are dressed up with freaky masks and zombie blood. There's a stage on the main dance floor with poles that people really enjoy. A lot of my friends who are girls like to go on gay night, since there are fewer creepers. The drinks are good. Make friends with a bartender, and get their signature drink. The place is 18+ so you might run into some people who are just coming out of high school. Don't be a creeper. Also don't buy drinks for under aged people. Bad form, and they have hawk-like security who will swoop in and correct your error. read more

They're is tons of lgbt people who show up since it's in the middle of Ann Arbor and almost all people are very open to dancing with whoever and just having a good time. Awesome place to go dance with pretty great drink specials. The bartenders are also good at giving you what you pay for. I love the Red Room downstairs cause the music is always great and it provides a smaller, more intimate atmosphere. Everyone is friendly, as long as you obey the rules. They are strict and won't let in anybody who is too drunk or anyone with a fake ID. I'm sure that's why they've been in business so long and are still doing well. The most incredible thing is that they've brought some world-class electronic music DJs in to spin. If you're trying to get that New York/Chicago mega-club feel, Necto is the only place in Ann Arbor--or all of southeastern Michigan--that fills that role. Maxing out at about 800-1,000 people, this place is way bigger than any other place in town. But the best part about Necto is the sound system: 7 sub-woofers on the main floor rumble your ribcage and make you wanna get frisky fast. That, combined with $2 vodka drinks and $2 miller lite bottles on Thursdays, makes this place my #1 spot on Thursdays. As well, being a UofM student, I absolutely love how they have student groups take over their Red Room downstairs every Thursday and Saturday... that's how I met a bunch of sexy people my Freshman and Sophomore years. Only thing that sucks is that if you're underage you're pretty much screwed cause security is super intense about people with "x's" on their hand drinking. My review is for Factory Monday nights. I've been a couple couple dozen times over the past few years simply because there isn't much else to do on a Monday night and some of my friends go here. To start with, there is no industrial or goth and very, very little EBM. So despite reports of this, be warned. Also, either the DJs have their hands tied or they feel no desire to stray from their setlist, which is basically the same every week. Here are the songs you will hear: 1. Zydrate Anatomy (they usually play this song around 11) from Repo! 2. Never Wanted to Dance by MSI 3. Face Down Ass Up 4. that stupid Jedi song from cartoon network 5. Let the Bodies Hit the Floor 6. Down with the Sickness 7. Undead by Hollywood Undead (they sometimes play this more than once) 8. SOMETIMES Tear you Apart by She Wants Revenge 9. SOMETIMES something by Rammstein, usually their worst song (Te Quiero Puta) 10. SOMETIMES some decent music, like VNV Nation, Covenant or Depeche Mode. Usually shitty remixes though. I could go on, but it's embarrassing. The management leaves a lot to be desired, too. I have had incidents where I have been SCREAMING for security because of men in my space, trying to grab at me or repeatedly pestering me. With one incident, a man kept taking pictures of me and when I asked him to stop he stepped into my personal space and started snapping pictures literally inches from my face. The manager told me that he would be asked to leave and went to "look for" this guy; five or ten minutes later I was going for a smoke and I saw the manager standing with two bouncers, seemingly scanning the area. I looked further ahead and saw the guy who had been bothering me. When I went over and pointed him out they told me that they had decided not to throw him out and I was given a free pass as "compensation." ........ Granted, I have worked at a night club (City Club) and I have been in the service industry for years. It is impossible to please everyone. But ladies, YOU ARE NOT A PRIORITY AT NECTO. They will encourage you to dress skimpily or to come and dance, but their priority is clearly appeasing neckbeards. So if you are bored on Monday and want to go for a dance to the same 20 or so songs, that's fine. But be warned that your comfort does not matter to management and variety doesn't matter to the DJs (with the exception of Void6, bless him). read more

The Necto (formally known as the Nectarine) has always had a stigma about it and I never understood why. Some claimed it was where the asians went. On Fridays, it was obviously where the gays went. Most nights, though, it was where the underage went. My friends opted for frat parties and nasty beer over a $5 cover for techno music. That said, I've probably only been to the Necto 3-4 times. One of those times being last night (Friday, Dec. 26, 2008). I was with a group that "just wanted to dance", plus one gay guy. Survey says, we're going to the Necto. Side note: on the walk from Conor's to the Necto, my friends started a snowball fight. Next thing we know, the loud speaker from a cop car says, "If you keep throwing those snowballs, someone is going to lose an eye." Objectively speaking, the Necto is actually a pretty decent club. Smart layout, decent house music upstairs, awesome hidden Red Room downstairs, and lots of dark hallways to do what you do in dark hallways. Big clubs were just never my scene and still aren't. If you like to shake your booty but can't stand the groping that happens at Rick's, then this might be your place. read more

We were gonna go hang out here for a roller derby fundraiser, but we got to the door 6 minutes before 1:30 and they refused to let us in. It was a bummer, but the even bigger bummer was that the door guy refused to get a manager when we requested to speak with one - and we're not rude people or anything. It just seemed like super bad customer service, all things considered. Our night ended up well salvaged elsewhere though, but I don't think I'll be back at the Necto, based on principal alone. read more

Although I do admit I've only been here once, and can't really remember my time here, I do remember a few things. The music wasn't really my style (although they do have different styles every night, which is kind of cool). The layout was kind of weird. The bathrooms were disgusting, and the bouncers were assholes. I was in line at the bathroom, and this one (sober and gay) guy was trying to get into the girls bathroom to get his friend who was passed out in the sink...while all of the girls in line were saying "it's ok, you can come in", as soon as he stepped in, he was yanked out by one of the bouncers and kicked out. When I left 10 minutes later, he was pleading with the bouncers to let him back in to get his friend. Only 19+ bar on UM campus, generally occupied by creepy men over the age of 25. I went to Necto for their Pride Night which happens on Fridays. When i went, there was no cover before 11:00 PM, and they had a drink special of $2 long island iced teas before that time, as well. It seemed like a pretty good deal, so I gave the place a shot. The club is pretty big with a couple of dance floors and an outside patio. I had a good experience with the bartenders, and I was pleasantly surprised with the cleanliness of the women's bathroom. However, that's about it. The DJs were passable at times and boring at others. In addition, the crowd was very juvenile, so I feel as though this place is best skipped if you are not a college student. In the end, I do not plan on visiting Necto frequently because I felt as though the experience was fine but, in the end, unsatisfying. They do somewhat frequently book drag queens who have been on RuPaul's Drag Race, which might bring me back in, but that's about it. read more

I remember being in high school and patiently awaiting my 18th birthday so I could come here. This was the "it" place for me and my friends. All the cool kids were coming here, and we wanted to go too! Now that I am past high school, this place is no longer relevant. I guess most college kids are simply high school students who are now old enough to get into clubs, and Ann Arbor being a college town, this draws a lot of immature drunken co-eds eager to grind on eachother to the loud to 40 music awkwardly mixed with club/house/techno. I suppose if there is nothing better to do, this might be an option, but even then...this place has a cover charge and there are free places to go. read more

Necto is the pinnacle of Ann Arbor for me. It is why we drive an hour from Kettering University in Flint after a long Friday and then drive back, completely drained of anything resembling energy, at 3-4 am. It is so much fun and so comfortable being there. I grew up in San Diego and have been to clubs there - I went to one recently that had good reviews and the cover was EXPENSIVE, the music was meh, the people were meh, and it was just a terribly mediocre experience all around. The decor was nice, but the place didn't have any life to it. Necto, on the other hand, has an enormous amount of character and is unique - the DJs are overall quite good, the main dance floor gets packed in a good way, there is very ample "chill" room once you need a little break, and the lower floor provides a nice area to just sit, relax, and talk whilst watching people dance to old music in very amusing ways. There is a patio outside that is open during the not-cold months, which can be a great way to cool down. Friday, in my opinion, is the best night to go especially if you are a couple and/or just want to dance and have fun with friends. The fewest douchebags come on Friday (I think they're afraid of teh gai people) and the fact that it's pride night allows for endless entertainment. Saturdays tend to be more filled with predators lined up on the wall, watching for potential female prey - but this is the case with all clubs and Necto has it to a lesser extent than others. I have a feeling Necto will always be my favorite club - I haven't been in awhile and I miss it dearly. Come here to dance, have fun, whatever. I don't think you'll be disappointed. :) read more

Meh indeed. Hadn't been in like 5 years and was dragged for a friends birthday party. It used to be a sweaty/dirty place you tolerated because it was packed with people and the music was good. Now its still sweaty and dirty but its 1/2 empty and the DJ seems to have forgotten his library of hip hop tunes and instead played a tape of industrial equipment malfunctioning. At one point, this is not an exaggeration, there was a mashup played of the "bird is the word" pee wee herman song and "a mili" by lil wayne... this is not a joke, that actually happened. Everyone on the dance floor paused for like 20 seconds and looked around confusedly until they changed the song. Bombs were 3/10 and the bartender poured liberally and that's the only thing preventing this from getting a 1 star rating. Between this and the demise of scorekeepers the last decade has hit Ann Arbors thursday night harder than globalization has hit Detroit. read more

I enjoy Necto, it's true, I'll admit it. Necto is a big place, multiple levels. When you enter you are greeted by some cranky bouncers who don't want any funny business, but that's okay, I guess.... but no joking around allowed! You climb stairs to enter Necto's main room. There is minimal seating, a few scattered booths and high-top tables. In the winter there's a coat check available for $1. There is a large dance floor that fills the center of the space and a stage with two poles that lines the back of the room. This is entertaining for people watching later on. There are two bars on this level & the staff is very speedy in serving customers. Drinks are well-made and there are usually drink specials. As you head downstairs there is a large outdoor courtyard area that is open in the summer; it's very enjoyable to sit out here on the benches under the twinkling lights. If you head farther downstairs you will find a bank of lockers; this is a cheaper bet than the coat check, especially when you've got a couple of friends with you. I wish more places had lockers, what a great idea!! The bathrooms are around the corner and you can continue through the maze to head even farther downstairs. There is one small sitting room off to the right and then the "Red Room" is all the way downstairs, offering another bar & dj, often playing different music (style-wise) than upstairs. Friday is gay night, which is my favorite night to go to Necto. It's a great time, very friendly people, a nice vibe, and girls can dance til their hearts are content without getting harassed by gropey guys on the dance floor. No cover before 10 (or til 11 for men with college id) and 1/2 off all drinks til 11. Bonus: both bathrooms are unisex on gay night, which always leads to entertaining encounters! The music upstairs is techno/electronic, the Red Room is more 80's, 90's and current hits. Downsides: #1) Necto won't serve tap water, you have to buy bottled water for $2. Boooo! This bugs me, as I don't think it's a wise business decision (from a social/cultural perspective) to not help people sober up. I always get around this by just filling my empty glass up in the bathroom sink - and anyone who is repulsed by that simply hasn't met my stomach of steel. There's no cold water in the ladies side though, gotta go to the men's side for the cold water. Don't ask me why. #2) Saturday nights are a TOTALLY different vibe... they let in 18+ every night, but on Saturdays there are a lot of young'ins running around that don't seem to know their bar manners. They are very aggressive and handsy. Beware! Bottom Line: Necto is a fun club for gay night (Friday)... it's a great vibe, good drink specials early on, and it's big enough so that there's something for everyone. read more

This is a review for Friday Pride at Necto, since I can't say I've been on any other day of the week. I guess I've always enjoyed myself when I've gone. Very large, eclectic crowd most of the time. Though, maybe it's just that I'm getting older, but sometimes most of the people seem to be about twelve years old. Of course, this is while school is in session, so it's full of little undergrads letting loose at the start of the weekend, and they think they're all hot tranny messes...but that is another discussion for another time and place. The drinks are of average price and quality for what you'd get at a college (gay) bar. The bartenders, though, tend to be very easy and efficient, so that's a plus. A concern I seem to hear/read again and again is the security. The bouncers are very strict about anything and everything, and hell, they should be. It's a business, not a frat party. read more
