    Willam!
    Annette J.

(FYI--this review is mostly for Pride Fridays. Can't speak for the other dance nights here, so proceed with that in mind). Have had so many fun nights here in my life. In college, I used to come to the drag shows with my friend over at Eastern (he was pals with many of the old guard that used to perform) and lately, though my clubbing days are mostly over, I've enjoyed going there to see the RuPaul's Drag Race queens that come through town. Most recently I was here for the Willam performance and book signing. It went so smoothly. They had an organized line, a great photo op (no personal phones but they had a professional photographer take snaps that you could pull from their FB page later), and after I was done the super awesome bouncers were nice enough to let me run home to let my dog out (I was so excited about the signing that I left without doing that! Poor pup!) and then come back before the doors opened to the public. Pretty great! Also, the price was fantastic. Tickets to the M&G were $25 but you got a copy of the book, got it signed, a photo, and early entry to the performance. Totally worth it. In general though, the price is great (free before 10pm and then a $5 cover for 21+, $10 for 18-20), the tunes are banging, the atmosphere is fun, the people are great, and the entertainment (lead by Chanel Hunter + Jadein Black) is great. So many awesome local queens perform here as well, so don't sleep on them! Drinks are half priced from 9-11pm and they do late sets (at 12am) for most performers. If you're into that type of entertainment, or just a fun LGBTQ inclusive party night, then be sure to stop in for some fun!

the jailhouse bathrooms here smh and this was a clean stall too

OMG this place is a trainwreck! Okay so to start off this review, me and my friend did not realize that this club allowed 18-20 years olds as well as the normal 21+ crowd so when we arrived, we felt like actual grandmas (we are 27-28 years old). The crowd here was super weird and all gathered together in the middle of the dancefloor even though there was plenty of space around them. We compared it to some kind of cult lol it was just a weird energy there. Also, the bathrooms there are so disgusting!! I compared it to a prison bathroom because it was just so nasty and industrial looking (I will upload the pic later). I feel like such a Karen posting this review but I honestly just had such a terrible experience there lol. Doesn't help that the bouncer rudely told my friend to throw out her water bottle that was practically empty even though he failed to notice that she came in with it *eye roll*. What a way to start off our saturday night. I will never go back to this club and would suggest others to reconsider this place too unless you are under 21 and desperate to go out and dance.

Love the bartenders and the club in general. Always a fun time no matter what. Bouncers suck though. They're unnecessarily rude.

Sure, it sucks that that new management came in a few years ago and painted over a lot of the old scribblings. The place has luckily regained more posters & records covers, etc. to adorn the walls. You know what? The kids here are still kinda the same -- at least in all of the important ways. When I played a show here a coupla years ago, I met a super-cool gal who reminded me of a reflection of myself at 19 or 20 -- into poetry and rock and roll. We chatted about X, and I knew that the Halfass was in good hands of this next generation. This is where I ate many greasy pounds of tempeh and curly fries in school. It's also where I poured my broken 19-yr old heart out to friends working behind the counter, then used my meal card to buy and down an entire pint of Ben & Jerry's. Not too much later, I got to do my laundry (the washers were right on the other side of the wall) while watching Low. Throughout the years the EQMC consistently brings in great bands -- both local and touring. They also provided a home for the first few ever Bang! dance parties. I first spotted my current sweetheart here. I brought him along to a show here to get the official stamp of approval from a best friend while seeing Saturday Looks Good to Me. Who knows -- without the trifecta of the Halfass, the Pirate House (RIP), and the downtown A2 Kinko's, my life may have taken a very different course. But thankfully, the Halfass was and remains there -- providing delicious greasy-ass food, pretty reliably great people, and a little incubator for musicians and students with plenty of all-ages shows.

The first show I went to here, I left bored to get a sandwich from jimmy john's. When I came back, which was nice enough that it was allowed, I came back in time for some punk to try to steal money after jumping on stage and 'rapping'. It's nice to have some of the Detroit bands out in ann arbor, but if you have a car, it's nothing you couldn't see every week in Detroit or Ypsilanti.

My first experience there happened to be a photo shoot that my friend Sarah did for her Alter Ego exhibition. I was very impressed by the studio space -- it was very roomy. In one part I saw Roost Roast's coffee roasting equipment (but no sign of Roost to bug him for a cup!). There was also a desk hosting a vintage typewriter and a curious manuscript. Another section had interesting tye dyed shirts? My friend Paul's spot had some equipment for music, and it was actually his band that I got to see perform later on in that space. It was very nice, you'll see familiar faces around town. It's non-smoking, but that's ok because the porch is a very cozy place to light one. You get a great view of the night sky -- plus it's juuuust far enough from downtown to be able to kick back and relax.

There is only one small bathroom, which is definitely a bummer, but I can deal considering the opportunities Yellow Barn affords for the talented go-getters in this town.

Yes, many restaurants around have performers but there's something different about this kind of spot. The performers are not an afterthought. They're the focus and why people are there and the enjoying of music is a communal experience. North Star Lounge scratches that itch I have for a venue like that here in Ann Arbor. A friend of ours was playing a show here which made my first visit even more enjoyable and special. As a music venue this place is small but not uncomfortable in the slightest. It's what one might call, "intimate." For the show they had set out some rows of chairs but there were several tables and booths if you prefered to have a little more space or would like to eat while you watch the show. They have a limited menu for food and it's prepared at Detroit Filling Station next door (also NSL's owners) which means it's vegan and also delicious. It was a cold evening so went with comfort food and ordered the mac and cheese, which was as excellent as when I've ordered it from DFS. They have a nice cocktail/beer/wine menu but also a substantial NA/Mocktail selection. I've pumped the breaks on alcohol recently so I went with a hot tea to warm up and a mocktail with some muddled fruit and mint (the drinks are seasonal so the menu from that time is no longer posted for me to recall the name but it was very good). Good tunes, good food, good drinks, friendly folks. What else could you need? Check out their calendar of events now and plan your visit!

I am a wheelchair user and I reached out to inquire about the accessibility of the LGBT Halloween Drag Event, and unfortunately as is the case with most community events that are supposed to be inclusive, I was very disappointed with the response I received. "Hi Isobel, The event does take place upstairs. However, you are welcome on the first floor. We have a closed circuit camera upstairs that displays the show on a first floor monitor over the bar. If you choose to attend, staff will make sure to accommodate you on the first floor. I hope that helps." I am aware that the website of the North Star Lounge does not claim to be accessible, due to the size of the building they are not required to meet ADA accessibility requirements. I personally do not think this excuse is good enough for a venue hosting what is supposed to be community based events. This may be due to infrastructure, but infrastructure can be discriminatory and this is not a revolutionary concept. There is no other group of people that would be told they can pay to watch an event from an entirely different floor in a different room on a TV screen above a bar and that is considered acceptable. It is discriminatory and ableist, plain and simple. I would not recommend this venue to anyone in the disabled community, and if you care about the rights of disabled people you should not be attending either. If venues could tie profitability to accessibility we would have a whole different story, so please consider that before attending a community event in an inaccessible space. Disabled people belong every single place that you belong!
