The stay was comfortable & quite personalised for some parts. The staff at this hotel, right from the front desk, to the cafeteria, bar, lounge, house keeping and to the managerial, all seem to follow the same style- smile, ask for the comfort of the guest, be prompt, punctual, hospitable. Some of the qualities less commonly seen these days, and well appreciated. The most notable part is the round the clock housekeeping facilities(which had its own gaps and short falls, but were quickly addressed), the ability to reach the front desk at any hour of the day/night and them promptly providing what's needed (really!, I was impressed by the turnaround time of - within minutes). Post Covid especially, during most of my travels (my schedule requires very frequent travelling), the responsiveness and turnaround times across staff and hotels has been dwindling. I was pleasantly surprised by a "different"experience at the hotel. I recommend to give Crowne Plaza London - Gatwick a try on your next visit in town.

Parts of the hotel feel dated, walking along the ground floor corridors, inside the lift. My room was on the 3rd floor, not with a sea view but I wasn't here for the view and I'm sure if you ask for one when booking you might get one. My room was small but functional so no complaints from me. The bath/shower room was fresh so I guess an update has taken place in recent years. For an over night stay it works well, travelling light for work means not a lot of baggage which is good as I'm not sure what you would do with a suitcase! The staff I met was polite even though she couldn't get the kitchen opened for me but allowed me to order some food via Deliveroo, at least I could get some food! If you come with your own car the car park at the rear of the hotel is tiny, you've been warned!'

Their restaurant "Indigo" actually has really great food in the evening. Free WiFi. On the downside; they have no car park (street parking or a discounted rate at the NCP near by). No Air Con and my room smelt a little musky. Whilst the food in the restaurant is very good the musak they play is awful and the coffee in the morning probably broke EU laws for carrying the label; coffee. Twas weak. I only stayed here for 1 night when down on business, so every thing's totally judged on that basis.

Arrived late, and though the online hotel booking company had not transmitted our reservation to…read morethe staff at the Thistle, they sorted it out for us straight away. Not only did we get a room, we got a room overlooking the ocean, complete with a set of binoculars for our use during our stay. The staff at the desk here are all exceptional, friendly, and helpful. Wifi is reliable & free. Be warned, however: the parking is a NIGHTMARE. Here's a couple of tricks: For the Thistle, enter the parking deck from the ocean side of the hotel, not the one off The Lanes. If the system reports that the lot is full, press the button for a ticket and wait. Don't move the car, just be patient. As soon as a car exits the lot, the system detects it and will issue your ticket and raise the gate. Once we figured this out (thanks to the bellman, a very nice older Irish man), we only waited about 10-15 minutes before we were able to proceed. If you aren't patient, you'll end up driving around and around on very narrow poorly marked streets, possibly for hours because you'll have given up first spot in line for a space. If you park late (after 4 pm) and leave early (before 11 am), the parking fee of £20 overnight is cut in half. If you stay one minute past 11, though, you'll be charged the full £20. Generally, if you bring a car, you'd just as well prepare to get hammered on parking costs... I had my husband take the car with him when he left for Spain as I prefer to travel by train and avoid the headache. Breakfast at the hotel restaurant is a buffet for £10 per person, and is not the best you'll have, but it's not half bad. Full English items all present and accounted for on the hot bar (except blood pudding, dammit!) including eggs (scrambled or fried), fried toast, hash browns & fried sliced potatoes, sausage, roasted tomatoes, beans, and mushrooms (see my pic!), along with a fruit station, a bread and croissant station, a good variety of juices & a pastry station. We had a table overlooking the sea, and enjoyed the atmosphere and the food well enough. Although there are a lot of service people wandering around the dining room, it's difficult to actually get waited on unless you aggressively seek someone out, so don't be shy asking for what you need.

But, and here's our main issue: The entire appearance of its web site and its other marketing materials tries to pretend that Goodwood Hotel is a charming estate. It features only photos of the Goodwood house estate, implicitly making people believe that that's the charming place (or at least in viewable distance) in which they'll stay. It seemed that any depiction of the reality (see our photo) of the not particularly unique hotel were deliberately avoided. This lack of charm unfortunately is part of the entire "experience", including for example a breakfast in the very functional health club (where most people are dressed in sports gear, or, as seen, even in bathrobe).

Bedrooms are sympathetically restored, with an unobtrusive modern touch, in warm neutral tones. There's a flat-screen TV on the wall, comfy chairs to relax in, a good supply of quality wooden hangers (although only wall hooks, rather than a closed wardrobe) to hang your clothes on and a sleek, efficient kettle together with tea and coffee supplies to prepare hot drinks with. The bathroom is simple and white, comfortable enough (and very clean) with courtesy (ginseng-enriched) products. Rooms still use a traditional key system and have a name as well as a number. I was concerned that sounds from the (quite noisy) old-fashioned, gate-style, lift might be intrusive but happily that wasn't the case. Views from my window (at the back of the hotel) were of buildings and the car park with verdant hills in the distance. Reception staff were efficient, smiling, helpful, welcoming and obliging. Well-deserved of its three star rating; decent value (even better if you get a special offer deal) and a very pleasant, convenient place to stay in the centre of Chichester and for access to other parts of West Sussex.
