I've stayed here at least 6 times in the last 15 years & the standard of accommodation is 1st rate as are the cooked breakfasts - just the job to set up a day's walking, cycling or driving around this delightful island! Carol & Paul Hallums run The Lodge & go beyond the call of duty to make guests feel welcome & help advise on local events or attractions. Well worth a visit! There's a bus stop close by - Vectis Buses run a reliable service across the island & a week's pass that includes the open-top tour buses costs £20 each with family tickets also available.

Despite receiving a confirmation email, staff reported no record. However, we were seated by a charming waitress. Quite a comprehensive menu, and there isn't much you can't get here. There was quite a quote a crowd so we were quoted a 30 minute wait, but it didn't take that long. Two of us had Codfather fish n' chips, one had Hunter's Chicken and the other had BBQ ribs. The cod was good quality but the batter quite dark and greasy. The ribs looked and tasted terrific, as was the garni. The Hunter's was equally tasty All of us thought the chips, though frozen were really good quality. Nearly all the meals were £8-9 ish. Yeahhh... we would go back again...! Good rear car park...easy access.

The bar area is rustic Farrow and Ball but none the worse for that, serves London Pride and Sussex Bitter. It has the feel of a cocktail bar rather than a pub, but it was busy with pre restaurant drinkers. Needless to say, a massive improvement on the pub in it's previous incarnation, which was appalling.

The pub is steeped in history and that is reflected in the well kept but near un-touched interior. They have some great ales on tap and all are served with a friendly smile and, if not too busy, are happy to talk through some of the pub's history. The garden here in the summer is fantastic. The views are breath-taking and they run a barbecue every Sunday which of course, does attract a huge crowd so either get there early or have some extra bags of patience with you. We head there without fail once a year with a big group of friends and spend the whole afternoon eating and drinking beer, I highly advise you to do the same!

The bed was one of the best of our 3 week journey and the next morning found the breakfast room sunny and inviting. As a treat, we had our laundry cared for and took advantage of prepared sandwiches for our sojourn into Portsmouth for the day. We enjoyed ourselves so much, we decided to stay over 3 nights. The pub just down the road a short walk was inviting and had a nice selection of well prepared meals. We will definitely return if we can.
