I happened on this place a couple of years ago and have never forgotten it. We'd walked along the downs from Hastings Old Town, cut inland near Pett and followed the military canal to Winchelsea. It's the most picturesque East Sussex village I know and a place that makes Rye look a little, well, obvious!
It's remarkable for two reasons. Firstly it's aforementioned location but more importantly, I eat the best fish I have ever had in my life here. It was grilled plaice - so local you can see the bay from the beer garden. Seriously. It was absolutely fantastic. Grilled with butter & lemon only but absolutely memorable and as fresh as a daisy. No doubt the Hastings fisherman had landed it that morning. It put the various TV chefs & their establishments to shame....and I've been to them too.
BTW to complete a classic walk, and having left your car in Hastings Old Town, get the train back from Winchelsea's ludicrously unused station.
A perfect day. read more
