I was introduced to Living Word in February 1991 through my then-girlfriend. She attended services…read morethere and invited me to go with her one Sunday morning. It reminded me of a service I might see on TV (later finding out the church just begun broadcasting on a local station). Pastor Mac encouraged first-time visitors to come back again "to take a more accurate measure of us as a church." The next two times I went to Living Word, I still resisted the altar call for salvation. Coming from a traditional Lutheran background, I was a bit uncomfortable in a Full Gospel atmosphere. Then on March 19 of that year, my sister and her husband led me to the Lord at their home in Fargo, North Dakota. Two days later, I met with a pastor from their church. He recommended visiting two fellowships he knew about in the Twin Cities area. One of them was Living Word. Soon I attended membership classes there and decided to make it my home church. For the next two years, I put my audio recording skills to use by volunteering in Living Word's tape ministry. Having access to the church's cassette library helped me grow as a Christian. I listened to numerous sermon tapes at home, at work, and in my car. In addition to Pastor Mac, I heard messages from associate pastors plus guest speakers such as Dwight Thompson, Willie George, Jerry Savelle, Jesse Duplantis, and Kenneth Copeland. Their teachings built my confidence in God's promises of healing and prosperity as well as eternal life in heaven. After a temporary move to the Chicago area, I returned to the Twin Cities in early 1994. By this time, my friend Steve had become a leader in Living Word's evangelism ministry and invited me to go street witnessing with them on Monday nights. The Lord had already put it in my heart to share my faith more. At the end of 1995, the Lord led me to become an usher. After doing that for twelve months, I stepped down to focus more on evangelism. Eventually, the Lord led me to leave Living Word and become a full-time missionary. In recent years, the Lord has led me to return to the Twin Cities area for extended stays. Although I've worked with other churches in the area, I still attend services at Living Word and join them for evangelism outreaches. The church has changed since I first started going there. For example, the worship musicians were (in my opinion) a bit stuffy doing inspirational songs I mostly didn't care for. Now they have a more modern sound with added visual effects. Living Word has expanded to include a Christian school, a chemical dependency treatment facility, and various other ministries. I'm thankful for Lynne Hammond's commitment to prayer and Mac giving up his airfreight business to pastor a church that has changed many lives. Until the Lord returns, I pray Living Word Christian Center continues having a positive influence upon the state of Minnesota and beyond.

I found the preaching excellent, the music likewise, and there are numerous and varied opportunities for spiritual growth. However, I must rate the church "average" for one reason: the Senior Pastor jet-sets all over the world and tries to dress it up with a "stained glass" excuse of "carrying the gospel hear, near and far." In fact, I think he's likely OUT of the country more than he is IN it. On weekends he preaches, he tells the congregation about weekends he was absent; stating he just returned from South America, Indonesia, Africa, Sri Lanka, wherever! Anyone with any degree of familiarity with foreign travel can easily discern that this activity has to cost in the hundreds of thousands of dollars annually when the frequency is considered. There is airfare, ground transportation, food, lodging and miscellaneous expense associated with this kind of a lifestyle. It is dressed up in the "stained glass" excuse of "carrying the gospel here, near and far." (I would say "near" is a better idea; there have to be tens of thousands within the outer limits of the church locally who could benefit from the gospel and/or the expenditure of funds this travel entails.) The church is about to change Senior Pastors; the new one takes office September 1. However, the old one is "transitioning" into a role in which he will continue this lifestyle. If anything, I expect he'll do more of it. I simply cannot support this, and In my opinion, it is simply shameless jet-setting on someone else's dime. For this reason, I don't pledge and must rate the church "average" even though "excellent" would otherwise be in order.

While I am not a member of this church, I have visited 4 or 5 times over the past year, and each time, I have come away with the following views of this community: 1) They're all about the person, Jesus Christ. He lived and He died and He rose again - for all of us. 2) They're going to love on you. People are genuinely welcoming, and not in a superficial way. 3) The teaching is powerful, intellectually challenging, and thoroughly Bible-centric. In full disclosure, Aldrich is an urban PCUSA church, and like many mainline denominations, its membership has declined and aged in recent years. Still, the place is open, earnest, and welcoming and I always enjoy going back. I've only heard the new pastor preach once, but it was an excellent and poignant sermon. My brother - a high school senior - plays the piano and sings in the worship band. That's saying something I think - that a talented high school kid would want to spend every Sunday morning playing songs at church with a lot of people who are well past high school age. Finally, I got married here, and so did my parents, so rock on Aldrich!

But these things aren't what make a church. What makes a church is a community of people living as people of God, and the community at Aldrich is rich in this regard. The people are unique, sometimes a bit odd, but they are very welcoming, intentional and have a huge heart for God. This church isn't perfect, but it shouldn't be. At Aldrich you won't find a performance, you'll find a fellowship of real people living their lives for God.
