You can tell by the way his hands work that he's been in this business for years. There are a couple of good butchers in New Farm, all offering great meat selections. The reason I go to Petersen's is because it makes me feel good to support that business. The shop is awfully quaint, and looks like the kind of place your grandma would have gone to get T bones for your grandpa because they were his special treat. (It's impossible not to get romantic about this store). On a busy day, I'd almost consider it fun to stand in the narrow customer area with every other man and his dog, breathing in that flesh smell, waiting patiently for someone to serve me. It's the atmosphere of this place that gets me more than specialty or novelty items they sell here (anything 'duck' is not ever a problem here). The prices are more than reasonable, and the meats are delicious. The butcher experience is a happy one here.

Ah, how I wish the days of shopping for meat at an actual local butcher could be revived! And it can, if you all shop there. It's worth supporting a business like this because the produce is so fresh and extremely reasonable. The store is conveniently located on the corner James and Kent Streets in New Farm, and the prices are much better than other places in the area. Plus, the meat is fantastic! I have bought great lamb shoulders from Petersen's, as well as some of the best steaks I have had at home. So if you live in a bit of a carnivorous household then cease your trips to the supermarket giants and buy your fresh meat from a local butcher like Petersen's.

Known for it's intriguing combinations, This store offers amazing Liqueurs, spirits, fortified wines, oils and vinegars for you to fill up and take home in whatever size bottle you need. I remember being stumped for good gift idea's for my manly man friend, but after talking to the friendly sales staff I got to take home white port in a bottle that had a GLASS SHIP IN IT. (Needless to say it's so boss it still resides on the kitchen counter.) With liqueurs ranging from mango melon, pineapple, rose, limoncello, cognac and walnut, AND melon (as well as a yummy chocolate vodka.) This place definitely has you spoiled for choice. And oh, what a place full of delightful, alcoholic things! But first there's the amazing oils (I don't cook, but even I was impressed). I totes wanted the Mandarin Infused Extra Virgin Olive Oil to dress some of my Christmas Day salads with. Or perhaps even the Raspberry Caramelised Balsamic Vinegar to dip breads in? Then I realised that I was loitering right beside a huge bottle of chocolate Port. Yes, you read that right. It's Port and it's chocolate flavoured. You can even soak strawbs in it. Then there were the other amazing liquers, just ripe for adding into cocktails: watermelon, rose, mango, macadamia nut). I underestimated you, Liqurious. Respect.

However there is something about the vast array of chocolatey delights at Max Brenner that often draws me in. The chocolate fondue comes with a pot each of milk and dark chocolate and a selection of fruits and treats to dip in. Max Brenner Hamilton is always very busy but you get served very quickly. Your chocolatey delights come out within 10-15 minutes which I was surprised at because of how busy the place is. I am loving the ice cream sundaes they have through summer. A great place for dessert if you are a local or even an out of towner. Good quality chocolatey goodness! The only negatives I can think of is that it is a ittle pricey ($38.50 for two sundaes and 2 hot chocolates) but for ggod quality, it is worth it. Also, the tables could be cleared a little quicker but still a great place to go.
