You can tell by the way his hands work that he's been in this business for years. There are a couple of good butchers in New Farm, all offering great meat selections. The reason I go to Petersen's is because it makes me feel good to support that business. The shop is awfully quaint, and looks like the kind of place your grandma would have gone to get T bones for your grandpa because they were his special treat. (It's impossible not to get romantic about this store). On a busy day, I'd almost consider it fun to stand in the narrow customer area with every other man and his dog, breathing in that flesh smell, waiting patiently for someone to serve me. It's the atmosphere of this place that gets me more than specialty or novelty items they sell here (anything 'duck' is not ever a problem here). The prices are more than reasonable, and the meats are delicious. The butcher experience is a happy one here.

The store is conveniently located on the corner James and Kent Streets in New Farm, and the prices are much better than other places in the area. Plus, the meat is fantastic! I have bought great lamb shoulders from Petersen's, as well as some of the best steaks I have had at home. So if you live in a bit of a carnivorous household then cease your trips to the supermarket giants and buy your fresh meat from a local butcher like Petersen's.

Known for it's intriguing combinations, This store offers amazing Liqueurs, spirits, fortified wines, oils and vinegars for you to fill up and take home in whatever size bottle you need. I remember being stumped for good gift idea's for my manly man friend, but after talking to the friendly sales staff I got to take home white port in a bottle that had a GLASS SHIP IN IT. (Needless to say it's so boss it still resides on the kitchen counter.) With liqueurs ranging from mango melon, pineapple, rose, limoncello, cognac and walnut, AND melon (as well as a yummy chocolate vodka.) This place definitely has you spoiled for choice. I tried their 56% iced chocolate drink at 156 Adelaide St., which was fantastic. Would definitely stop by for a chocolate drink any time I am back in Brisbane. Highly, highly recommend. I bought chocolates at 156 first. Everything I saw was $6 for 100 grams, but I didn't know what 100 grams of chocolate looks like (darn Imperial system) so I ended up getting a pre-packaged and wrapped pack of 4 random goods for $30. Mixed bag whether it's worth it or not. Buying the 4 packs separately would have been cheaper, but the milk chocolate-covered strawberries in the gift set weren't in stock individually at the 144 store.

Their specialty is wine, which happens to be my poison, so it's a pretty good relationship we have going on. One staff member, John, is great with his wines and has a really refined palate, so if you have a question about vino, he is your man! This is a boutique bottle shop in every sense. There are some exceptional wines and limited edition beers that you will be hard pressed finding anywhere else. If you enjoy a tipple, Chalk n Cheese is a great place to find something you may not have had before.
