We wanted to stay at something other than a big chain and found this hotel. The staff told us this was University of Canterbury at one point and there are still music classes happening today. The earthquake caused a lot of damage but they have since repaired the structures. One of the building became The Observatory Hotel it's very boutique and quite lovely, as you can see from the photos. The location is fantastic, as you're only a few minutes by foot to The Riverside Market.
The decor is updated and modern but has a traditional charm. Amenities are convenient and well done. I loved the reading room, with all the books and a good selection of tea. Rooms are accommodated well, including a comfortable bed and great pillows (for some reason, I find this rare as most hotel pillows are fluffy with no substance.)
We chatted with the woman at the front desk a lot. I'm embarrassed that I can't remember her name. She was so lovely and helpful with the history and recommendations! It's too and we didn't think to stay an extra day or two. read more
