I'll admit that this review is as good as it is as much for the gig itself as the gig venue…read more Church gigs are awesome. Well, church gigs with suitably atmospheric music are awesome, anyway. I got to see Bohren & Der Club of Gore here who made the most of the setting, impressive considering they'd be equally at home in a smoky, dimly lit bar: as a dark jazz outfit, the minimalist and contemplative sound were a perfect fit for the setting. Making this more impressive was how they followed up an absolutely earth-shattering Stephen O'Malley showing (dubbed by the headliners as "the guitar inferno"). SO'M is one of the pioneers of drone metal, best known for his work in Khanate and Sunn O))). Drone metal is not for everyone, it's not easy to listen to, and quite frankly is often a bit flat on record. However, it's possible to create a really powerful experience with one man, one guitar, four amps, and profound projections. Part of it is the overwhelming of the senses with a wall of chords, part of it is the projection and the setting itself, and part of it is the fact that the church resonated in a way that you just wouldn't get with most normal gig venues. It's stuck with me since, feeling the sound wash over me was similar to standing on a cliff edge in a howling gale. Anyway, enough about that particular gig - if you get the chance to see an act you like here, I'd highly recommend it (although be warned - the line for the loo can get pretty long). St John's Sessions put on a lot of experimental/ambient shows which are so well suited to the space and it really adds a lot to the overall experience. In fact the show was so good that I totally forgot that they kept us waiting for an hour past doors open times (in a light sprinkle) for no discernible reason. Now I should knock off a star, but I don't reaaaally want to. Because I think more people should go see experimental music in churches.

On the nights I've been here, there's also a chill, neighborhood-y vibe--I get the impression a lot of the audience are local and regular.

The acoustics are phenomenal with the dome ceiling and stone walls, and the seating is accessible with a large octagonal ground floor and wrap around balcony. You're always right up in the action and though the building is massive, they certainly did a fantastic job maintaining the intimate vibe. I mean, Victorian Gothic architecture is all the rage these days for true expert concert goers... With all of the nightclub-come-churches that try unsuccessfully to pull this dual purpose venue thing off, Union Chapel does so flawlessly, allowing people to participate in worship of their choice (whether it be religion or rock) on a weekly basis.

This is a friendly church with a diverse congregation. The people are very friendly and whenever I go I feel very welcomed. The pastor, Mark Shelton is American and brings a vibe to the church that I'm used to. He is also funny, personable, and a great preacher, I always get something from the message. When I attend church he and his wife always ask how I've been and what I'm up to. It is nice to know that they recognize me and wish me well. It is not always easy to find a friendly church but Cross Street is just that, a friendly, warm church not far from the business of Upper Street.

Monday athletics during the winter and swimming at Tottenham during the summer Tuesday Boy Scouts, Wednesday Choir practice and evening service,Friday choir practice.Saturday afternoon fortnightly country walks Sunday 2 services and Sunday school. the choir consisted of some 45 all male. All boys had Christmas prizes (presents) The organist and choir master ( I believe was Proff Boddington) had been there for 52 years but resigned just before my family moved away. History The nave was built in 1880-1 and the sanctuary in 1893-4 by the prolific church architect George Frederick Bodley (1827-1907) and Thomas Garner, with whom he had a 28-year professional partnership. A planned tower was never built. St Michael's subsumed the parish of All Saints in the 1950s, and since 2003 has been part of a team ministry with St Pancras Old Church, St Mary's Somers Town and St Paul's Camden Square. The church The church is orientated north-south, with the liturgical west end facing the road. The church is built of yellow stock brick with stone dressings in the Decorated Gothic style. Both the west window and the clerestory windows over the aisles have delicate geometric tracery and have recently been restored. Inside, the stone-lined interior consists of a nave of 5 bays, which draws the eye to the large sanctuary: Bodley did not include a chancel arch in the scheme, so the nave and sanctuary form a single, large space. The height of the nave is emphasised by the fact that the floor is lower than the street outside. There is a small, stone-vaulted chapel to the north. The interior has decorative stencilling, but is need of repair. Fittings and furnishings are relatively limited, but include the original altar of 1880, and a selection of statues, some in the pre-Raphaelite style, though that of St George dates from 1939; an attractive coloured pulpit; a marble altar and Easter Sepulchre in the north chapel; and a brass to Edward Bainbridge Reynolds, incumbent, who died in 1907. The church has a flourishing congregation in the Anglo-Catholic tradition, and the adjacent centre provides a range of outreach services for the local community.
