For my first visit to London, it was great to be so close to Waterloo Station. I booked the Premier Inn again for a trip with a friend in my most recent visit to London. And nostalgia for my initial London visit could not save this experience we had at The Premier Inn Waterloo. Aside from the great transportation option of being so close to Waterloo Station, it's also right in eyesight and walking distance to the London eye (5 mins), Westminster Bridge/Big Ben (10 mins), and County Hall (right across the street). The Premier Inn hotel is built right into a historical landmark, The "General Lying In" (maternity) Hospital. First off, the lobby is not in the best shape, with many broken check-in machines and furniture that has seen much better days. As a plus, though, there is a Starbucks in the County Hall plaza right across the street, which we visited often, on our most recent visit. The room was ok, but it seems way more cramped than on my first stay all those years ago. Our room did have a nice view out to County Hall with a semi-view of the Eye behind it, so that was nice - and the large window did let a lot of natural light in. The bathroom was ok sized but right next to one of the beds (if you do the two bedroom configuration), so you better be very close friends or spouses to stay in that type of room, because you'll be going to the bathroom right next to them with a thin little door between you. We also saw a tiny bug in the bathroom too, so that was not the best. Another issue we had was that we stayed for an entire week and were told by the front desk that they do not change any sheets or clean your room if you weren't staying there 10 days or more. My friend even had a womanly spotting issue with her sheets and they still would not change or clean them! I've never heard of anything like that and it made the entire visit very uncomfortable. The old phrase "location, location, location" does not save this one, because the location IS great but I don't think that alone was worth all the issues we ran into here.

He was delightful, always cheerful and so helpful! We loved the traditional English breakfast, the afternoon tea, and it backs up to a wonderful walkable area called Pavilion Toad, which has coffee, pastries, restaurants and shopping. The waiter failed to bring out all items ordered and when the pastry baskets came out all of the pastries were cold and not warmed as before. The poached eggs were hard boiled and needed to be replaced and water was never brought to the table after three requests. I would give this restaurant a 2 overall rating if I had not previously rated it a 4 all along.

The hotel location is fabulous as well. You are conveniently located at the edge of Hyde park. It was less than a mile to Oxford street. We thoroughly enjoyed this property and we are already planning when we can return!!

If you're use to the Ritz, then stay there. Otherwise, if you prefer character, charm and something with a home-style feel, then the Main House is for you. It's maybe 100 yards from Portobello market. On the corner near the market area is an ATM and bakery/cafe. In fact, there were cafes all over as you'd expect. Just a wonderful place and when we return to London, we will be booking a room there again.

A drink machine is also required during lunch. I am very disappointed that the staff benefit breakfast is not included every morning; it's just dry bread and milk, which is not enough. Please consider the care of staff. We feel mistreated. More salad is required for staff at lunchtime. Enough is being made brown rice dish needs to be included every week, rather than just potatoes. I had a recent stay here and had a good experience overall. This is a typical Firmdale property -…read moretypical in the sense that although each property has its own character and design elements overall, the room interiors feel almost identical. To that note, the rooms felt smaller in this location with either no view or a terrible view. I'm sure there are a handful of rooms that overlook Charlotte Street which would provide the best views of all the sides. The windows are large but no sense if nothing to look at. My room this time was on the smaller side - again as compared to other Firmdale properties like Covent Garden, Haymarket or Soho. The rooms tend to be very quiet with terrific sound baffling and the bathrooms are typically very welcoming and clean. My bathroom was tiny where you could practically sit on the toilet and wash your hands. Staff seem happy and are mostly informed. There is a bar and restaurant that gets super busy at all hours and they also offer a hospitality room with an honor bar and a screening room for ~75 (must book ahead). Firmdale highlights include the complimentary pillow mist (a favorite of mine!), clean/welcoming bathrooms with Kit Kemp wonderfully smelling products, perhaps the most comfortable overstuffed beds out there and just so beautifully appointed overall.
