I stopped by the Old Country Store on my quest for a quilt. It is as the name implies, a Country Store selling a multitude of things from books, to kitchen gadgets, to handmade local items, to even puzzles. Backroom is filled with quilting material and supplies. I specifically went in to look at theIr already made quilts. I was greeted but the staff never went out of their way to ask for help and explain what size quilts were where. The store is chock full of great souvenirs and gifts from the surrounding Amish areas but it wasn't a "quilt" store. Great parking though!!! read more

While in my quest for a Amish hex symbol for my barn, I came across The Old Country Store in the heart of Lancaster. I walk in see a cute woman with a homemade mask ringing up customers. I ask: do you have any Amish Hex signs for sale? We do not, we do sell flags. Have you tried Google? Lordy! I shop around, pick up a jar of Chow Chow, Amish peanut butter mixed with marshmallow?? (Sooooo good) I also see homemade dog treats? Both my dogs loved the beef sticks but weren't too crazy over the dried biscuits. Lovely, authentic little place, with genuine people and high quality goods. Stop in to check out all their wares and explore the whole region while you're at it. This store is a treasure trove of beautiful fabric artfully displayed, supplies, tools, quilting books, handmade crafts, cooking tools and cookbooks, and quilts of the finest quality. Unique and special to this store are fat quarter packs assembled on site. They're displayed by color and feature many types, complementary, hue and value arrays, novelty, holiday, thirties, modern, batiks and wools. Fabric bolts are grouped by color and the selection is extensive. Patterns, kits, and books cover many styles as well. It's a friendly place. Customers are welcomed warmly and always thanked upon leaving. Everyone is welcome here, too. I once saw a woman pull up on a motorcycle, pay over $1000 cash for a quilt, and leave with a smile. The store folks were gracious and friendly, never letting on that she was unusual in any way. The quilts are just spectacular in design and workmanship. Very cute store. They have everything from kitchen gadgets to locally made art to fabric to handmade quilts. The quilts are gorgeous. Large selection of nice fabrics in the back and a lot of kits to make your own quilt. The staff are happy to help if you have no idea what you are doing in terms of quilting and will give you space to browse without any pressure if that is what you want. I got a small quilt kit and am having so much fun making it and learning about quilting via you tube videos. read more

Came for the fabric, stayed for the Knick knacks! Great fabric selection for a huge quilt project my mom was working on. We had an idea in our mind, and the staff helped brainstorm different ideas and find just the fabric we were looking for! Nice small watercolor painting selection of birds, Amish, pigs, & chickens by a native Lancaster artist. Reasonably priced. They also had local leather animal, fish, horse, horse & buggy with bells to hang. Very cute. Also bought a birdhouse made from antique tools. Pretty cool! I'd recommend this store for unique local gifts. I used to quilt and they had a beautiful selection priced around $1k. The quilts were more intricate than other places. Stitching was of nice detail. Highly recommend this store to check out. read more

Loved this shop. It was very crowded when we were there, which made it overwhelming, some of the spaces are tight. But it had lots of personality, notions and more importantly fabric. Less fabric than about 6 years ago, when I was there last. Went in to get a book advertised on line at a 40 percent discount. Was not discounted in store. The nice young lady who waited on me suggested I order it on line and pick it up in the store the next day with another 15% discount at that. Be very careful if you purchase quarter yard cuts of fabric at this store. They scissor cut and cut exactly to the inch. While no one expects 10" for the price of 9", when you scissor cut there are human inaccuracies that don't occur if you rotary cut. It is fair to expect 9" of useable fabric for the price of nine inches of fabric. When pointing this out to the staff they were very rude and made us feel badly for just asking for a useable nine inches. read more
