Despite the unforeseen detour we enjoyed visiting the creek and the parts of the trail we could. There are lots of bugs in the woods near the creek but other than this I recommend visiting. It's very peaceful.

Cheeney Creek is a nice nature area just south of downtown Fishers. This area features paved and…read morenature trails with tall trees to keep things cool in the summer. If you prefer to walk/hike in the shade, Cheeney Creek is a good place to visit. The trails aren't particularly long, clocking in at around two miles. There is more to see with the nature trails since they run adjacent to a large pond. There are several spots and a dock that are ideal for fishing. Cheeney Creek was moderately busy during a weekend visit. I ran into a few folks here or there and some bikers, but that's about it. Afterwards you can take a short walk or drive to 116th street for some refreshments.

The park is also dog friendly. The park was well kept. The bridge was nicely constructed. My first sight to see this type of bridge. This place offers the following: Aerial Adventure trails, Archery Range & Pro shop, Bike trails, Canoe launch, Equestrian center & trail, Fishing, Green space, Hiking trails, Natural History center, Nature trail, Prairie, Sport and target archery. The park encompasses 800 acres with 8 miles of multi use trails and 3 miles of white river. The restored Native American village was pretty neat to see how they lived. Another great park in Hamilton County!…read more Strawtown Koteewi Park is one of the more unique parks that I've visited in Indiana, as it has multiple Native American structures outside to explore. This is a really neat park to visit with kids, because they can go in and out of the huts, climb in and out of the archeology excavation site, and just have a good time learning about how people used to live on the land before we came along. There is also a very cool visitor's center with artifacts and treasures from a time long past, like a life-sized dugout canoe, animal skeletons, pottery shards, tools and weapons, and lots more. I took a foraging class here this summer, and it was really great learning about the edible plants that are on the park property. Best of all, it was free! But the class was so good that I would have paid for it. Different classes happen all year long, and many of them are free or very little cost. This park is actually very large, and there are different sections where you can hike, go zip lining and horseback riding. The zip lining and horseback riding areas are seasonal, so they're not open all year long.

It's pristine, clean, decent and clean restrooms (when they get around to adding the TP), and although the roads are in bad shape in many places, it's a fine spot for forest bathing. Your cellphone might not work in some parts of it. Put it away. If you simply must, go to the top of most hills. There are no gas stations or stores within ten miles in any direction; bring the stuff you need for your visit. In the summer, the amount of oxygen you can get here is almost overwhelmingly delicious. There are playgrounds, picnic tables, and shelters, and hundreds of places for a picnic on a blanket/rug. There are insects; remember your bug spray and tick repellent. Enjoy. It's FREE.

This state forest has two of my favorite longer day hikes within an hour of Indianapolis; The Low…read moreGap Trail and The Three Lakes Trail. The Tecumseh Trail also runs through MMSF. In the last few years, a nice bike trail has been paved in and a new office built. There are also backcountry camping sites for primitive camping-be site to check in and practice leave no trace! The park does not have a lot of state park like amenities so be prepared to use a pit toilet. Bring your own tp and hand sanitizer just in case! The hikes are fairly challenging due to length and have some good hills. Bring plenty of water and keep an eye out for wildlife. Rattlesnakes have been spotted in the area. Hunting is also allowed in the state forest so wear bright colors at all times just in case. If you're looking for a challenging hike that is not overly populated but not totally isolated Morgan Monroe State Forest is an excellent choice.

We originally…read morevisited because we wanted to check out the playground, but we soon discovered that this park has a beautiful nature trail that winds along the back of the park. The Geist Reservoir runs through the park, and when we visited, we saw people kayaking along the river. We had fun just throwing rocks into the water. Be advised that there are signs all around the park near the river that say that you shouldn't swim in the water because there is a strong undercurrent. So no swimming! The playground has a really neat play structure with lots of ropes, ramps and things to climb. My kids had a lot of fun here -- it's set up almost like an obstacle course. There are also slides, swings (including a swing for really young children), riding toys and tunnels. The ground is covered with wood chips, so it's nice and soft in case your kiddo falls. There are also benches all around so you can sit and see your kid play from whatever angle you happen to be in. There are restrooms just off of the playground, and they were relatively clean when we were there. Parking is plentiful and right by the playground.
