I came here for lunch because my lunchbreak was short, and it's near my work. I ordered a chicken and mushroom wrap, toasted - and it was absolutely delicious! Sometimes you can't judge a book by its cover ... yes, it looks like a daggy 'deli' style cafe, but the staff are friendly, and there is plenty of seating (especially for those rainy days). Of course they sell other deli-style items (as well as some Chinese food), but I haven't tried anything past those chicken and mushroom wraps ... they're just too tasty :)

It's a very narrow road, made more narrow by the fact that cars are parked along it pretty much the whole way on both sides. So once I finally worked out where this place was, I was really very desperate for a milkshake and a break. OMFG. What a great place! The menu, while not huge, is packed full of extremely appetizing foods and drinks. The chocolate milkshake I had might well be the best I ever experience. It's hard to describe how good it is. I did get a couple of the handmade chocolates to try, and like the milkshake, they were delicious. Service here is excellent. Really friendly. The shop itself is a converted house, and it's beautiful. It really is. It's surprisingly large. If you look at it from the street, you'll have no idea how many people can fit into this palace of chocolatey pleasure. I'm another who would give this place ten stars. Or more.

Joe's is definitely an institution in Henley Beach, frequented by local celebrities and politicians having a quiet time out. Joe is a celebrity himself, everyone knows him and he certainly knows all the regulars. He loves to have a chat and put little Baci chocolates on the ladies coffees and gives out the odd chuppa chupp to the kid's of the regulars. Joe's daughter, Bianca, is delightful also and usually working in the cafe keeping Joe on track. The coffee is delicious and if you are into toasted sandwiches, his are the best I have ever tasted. The location is heaven, the beach here is pristine and, in summer there is a constant stream of people walking up the steps to order some refreshments. If you are looking for a place to have a coffee while the kids play safely on the beach this is as good as it gets. I love sitting at the outdoor tables soaking up the sun and atmosphere of the cafe and the beautiful surrounds. Word to the wise, in winter if the weather is bad Joe's is often closed as there is no indoor seating. Heaven on the beach.

They have a fairly simple set-up; a small open kitchen and a few tables inside and then a few more tables outside. My first visit was on my brother's wedding day when the three of us bro's went out for breakfast beforehand. The breakfast wasn't huge or elaborate but was well cooked and the coffee was fantastic. I've been back for coffee and cake and the quality is still high. They sell all sorts of jams and spreads made locally in the hills and have a rack of plants out the front for purchase. I also read that they have a barter system there; so when we visited they were asking for lemons and were offering food or coffee in exchange. I like that initiative. If you live in the hills and have driven past on your way to somewhere else and thought "is that place any good?", the answer is yes, so you should pop in and support your local hills cafe. You never know how long these places will stay open if you don't.
