Closer inspection drew disappointment when we found that the garden itself was shut "because it's too hot today". It was 38 degrees. Quite normal for this time of year in South Australia I thought? Anyway, we were able to peer through the gate and it was left to the vivid imagination of the 5 year old as to what lay beyond! We decided to stay and have a latte and sat in the courtyard. The service was very good and the prices were reasonable considering that we were in a hot tourist area. I'm sure that we'll go back there - perhaps in winter to see if it's open. And I'm sure that an excited 5 year old's mind can magically wander.

When I went here I had a simple poached eggs with avo on rye toast. Unfortunately the eggs were a little too firmly cooked for my liking, but the dish was still fresh and filling. The other meal we shared was the Vienna schnitzel, with a few French fries, a little greens salad, and a side of mushroom gravy. Everything was delightful and tasty, perfectly cooked, and full of flavor. Looking out over the main street through town, with beautiful autumn colors on the leaves, was wonderful.

It's well priced and just really tasty. Their tasting room is also worth visiting, it's comfy and the staff will look after you. Some are a little up tight, but maybe I would be the same if I constantly had bucks parties coming through. The other let down was the food. Not as good as my last visit which was a shame as I had interstate guests. We had the radish salad dish, which was just confusing. Big chunks of radish with a weird sauce? Radishes should be sliced thinly, so as to not overpower the palate. The tasting plate was ok, nothing really stood out. Just some pickled veggies, olives and a couple of dips. No cheese? Why no cheese? Croquettes were ok as well... Did not taste like anything special. In fact, they were a little big so inside they were really pasty. Meh... The best of the bunch was the duck parfait. It was well seasoned, creamy and quite tasty. However, a little on the grainy side. The bread biscuits served with it were a little over toasted though. Oh well... It's not all bad though. If you manage to score a table inside (which is always well booked in advance) it is really lovely and quiet. I think that most of their other customers know what goes on outside and try to avoid it by going inside. Hmmmm.... after three chances I think I might just stop here to buy a couple of bottles of their Shiraz. I am just not going to bring guests here again in fear of disappointment. The Management staff here need to really consider when they are letting in certain guests. This doesn't really reflect well on their brand. Let alone, are the drunk bucks really going to be returning customers and buying their wine? Surely not. They are up for a winery tour to get on the piss. p.s. This little gem is nestled in a little corner of the Adelaide Hills which takes less time to get to from the CBD than some of the suburbs on the flats. I'd say this has been my favourite spot in the Hills to eat since I was old enough to appreciate its original owners larger than life personality. I've celebrated a few of my birthdays here, as well as other memorable family events like anniversaries..And it is where we have chosen to hold our wedding next year. It is literally like another world inside at Max's. Coupled with the renovations recently completed out the back and the cellar door sporting the delicious sidewood range of wines (and a cider!), this restaurant/venue has it all. During the summer, the outdoor/function area is effortlessly free-flowing, with a cheeky spot of golf for the keen punter to try and win a $2,000 prize (if you can throw a key in a lock from a decent distance that is!) The food is sublime and the service is always expert. That's really all that needs to be said...although I will provide an update after we've tied the knot next year! You can come here for a really decadent dinner treat, or a light bite and a bottle of wine, either way you'll be on a winning ticket.

They have chosen the right place to set up shop too. They are offering a modern styled cuisine in an area that is traditionally serving German and pub styled food. So for the locals, I am sure that it is a breath of fresh air. The restaurant is earthy styled with the use of a wooden cladding, furniture and decorated tree branches. The walls are painted in blackboard paint and cool chalk art is on display. They have a really creative menu; I was fortunate enough to try the prosciutto wrapped nectarine served with a salad full of yummy fetta, radish, mint and lettuce. It was a real treat, sweet and salty, and just the way I like it! If you are after a coffee and cake, this is also a really lovely destination. They served Kitchen 2C branded coffee and a beautiful selection of cakes and cookies. Yummy gluten free options too. The first time I went to dine was just before Christmas. Just wanted to also note that they were selling the most amazing home cooked Christmas puddings. What a great festive addition. Hearty soups and huge baguettes caught my eye on a cold winter's day in Stirling. My seasonal veggie soup came out with crusty bread and steaming hot. All I wanted to do for 15 minutes was eat that bloody soup but I had to wait for it to be less than burning. That soup-er temptress was worth the wait as she was peppery and full flavoured and very filling. I'm currently planning my return for a less heated affair and one of their big brekkies. It's a tad overwhelming but I prefer this to the chain sandwich store, production-line style of ordering. Also, The Essence baguettes are well over a foot long with heaps of filling all the way to the end. No need for a tape measure. The staff are really friendly, and it seems genuine. Even when they aren't having the best day, the inner awesome shines through. Given the success of the place in it's hidden location, it would seem the fickle people of Stirling agree. The baguettes. They're just that good. All the ingredients look, taste and smell super fresh. I haven't been able to decide on a favourite, but all that come with pancetta are droolworthy. Crispy salty awesome with fresh herbs, it sounds simple but it's done so well. The chicken ceasar is really good too, as are the turkey cranberry and the chicken avocado. The philly cheese steak owns my stomach, so filling, so good. The smell alone makes my mouth water. When I tried The salami baguette I had my standards set pretty low (I'm not a mad salami fan) but upon recommendation I had it toasted. To say I was impressed is an understatement. Possibly the best cheese toastie I've ever had. There are two vegetarian baguette options on the menu, both are really good quality full of roast vegetable and herb deliciousness. I haven't looked for a vegan option, but I'm sure these friendly folks won't bight your head off if you ask nicely. They also do good coffee, and like most places in Stirling these days they do breakfast. Unfortunately I'm yet to have the Essence Breakfast experience but it's certainly on my to do list.

For me it was "The King has no clothes". The lovely waitress rapid fire parroted off the description of each dish, intertwined with French or food jargon words most of which I had to ask her to repeat or explain. Many dishes were Minuscule wafers of air dried beef, mouses, tiny scraps of slightly over soused produce and chef's ego concoctions to justify the price. Then amongst the minuscule portions an unexplained giant sugary sour milk roll (potentially a palate cleanser). The desert with the old 'fizz wizz' trick was good and the petite fours nicely presented, although the chocolate tasted of pure white sugar. The wine by the glass was shot out of a ridiculous syringe argon gas contraption that lacked ceremony. Surely in a large busy degustation restaurant, draining these not so expensive bottles quickly and using a gas blanket preserver would avoid this?! In contrast, the Magill Estate takes great SA produce and doesn't muck with every dish quite so much and dishes are just big enough to justify a half serve of wine with each course.

The little chocolates were beautiful to look at; they had little patterns on top- the sort of thing that you think is too good looking to eat. The macaroon I had was salted caramel. I love salted caramel and it tasted good. Not the best macaroon I've had but definitely in the top 5! The shop itself does not have much seating especially outside. So it is possible that you may not be able to find somewhere to sit. But, you can get the desserts take away! Luckily enough we found a little table outside.
