I spent 10 nights based at this hotel and on the whole it was ok…read more The bedrooms are well appointed ample electrical points for those on business trips, the beds are comfortable and I had no problems sleeping, even on the first night which is usually my worst nights sleep when away. The food is of the standard hotel variety but it does the job. The meal selection is decent and has fish through to steak for those who enjoy their meat. They do have a gym on site which has the latest machines for all those gym junkies who might stay there. The room service was quick and pleasant but it does add £3.50 to your bill. There are lots of seats in the lobby area as I saw many people conducting business meetings over a coffee. The bar is open late however after 11pm all drinks have to be charged to your room no cash is taken after this point! The staff were all helpful and there was always someone around if you needed assistance. My only real bug bear is that the free wifi wasn't the strongest or the most reliable. If it was better I would have given them 4 stars ;-) but hey at least it was free and not an additional cost as in some hotels I have stayed in!

I had traditional Christmas dinner with soup, turkey and vegetables then Christmas pudding. The soup tasted like it came from a can, the vegetables were over cooked and rubbery, the meat was dry, but to be fair, the pudding was ok. Service was slow with a number of staff being a bit clumsy as plates were dropped more than once and a few messes made. The DJ (which consisted of some guy and his 12 year old son)was an improvement however, playing a good mix and not too much cheese. Can't say what their normal restaurant is like, nor what the hotel rooms are like, however, the meal here was enough to put me off ever coming back again.

Some of the double rooms have four poster beds and all of the decor is very oldy-worldy but still nice and not in disrepair. The bar is adequately sized and service goes on through the night. The conservatory is huge with plenty of comfortable seating and loads of sunshine if you're lucky! Breakfast the next day was brilliant with almost anything you wanted on the menu. At only a 10-15 minute cab ride into the town centre I'd recommend giving this place a shot.

A small path leads through the garden towards the hotel which is almost completely covered in Ivy. The entrance is through a huge conservatory, which houses a variety of comfortable seating, perfect for retiring with a coffee after a sumptuous meal. Through the conservatory is a bar area, where you can sit and peruse the varied menu. After recovering from the price of the meals we made our choices and were entertained by the gregarious owner, as we waited for our starters to be served to our table. The restaurant itself is impressively furnished, if a little old fashioned, however, the whole place oozes class, making you feel like your meal is a special occasion. A sociable round table aided the evening, and my starter of mushrooms and bacon in a light cheese sauce was impressive, however, my wife's prawn cocktail was less so. Good course spacing before the main course is always a good sign, as are unobtrusive but efficient waiting on staff. My main course of steak tournedos was sublime, with a good selection of vegetables and saute potatoes. But again my wife's seabass was a little dry, which when you're paying this kind of money is disappointing. Desserts were selected from a very large sweet trolley, which reminded me of the 1970s and were again a little disappointing: the Jamaican cheesecake was a little too fatty. Not the best all round meal we have eaten, but the whole experience at the Brookhouse just gives it an extra star. The prices are too prohibitive for regular visits, with a three course meal and drinks, not much shy of £50 per person. Still for a special occasion, it takes some beating.

We booked online several months in advance and paid only £29 for a double room. We did not check-in until almost midnight as this was a one night stop to avoid a long drive home after a party. The only member of staff present that late a night was a girl in her late teens. She did not remove her earphones to serve us, but did quickly find our reservation and ask if there was anything else we needed. There was a vending machine with crisps, chocolate, toothpaste, and canned drinks in the lobby. The room had the usual shower over a bath. There were towels provided as well as a small bar of soap, and plastic glasses. We had a double room, which has one double bed, and a sofa bed. There was a television, but as the remote control did not work we had to use the buttons on the front of the unit. The room was however spotlessly clean, and very quiet. Although we had been told when we checked in that reception was 24 hour, when we left at 11am the reception desk was unmanned. There was a post box for the room key, and a notice saying that from 7am to 3pm assistance was available from the cleaners. Breakfast was available from the next door Little Chef. We chose to drive into Swadlincote to a Wetherspoons instead! I would go back to this hotel for a one night stop due to the cleanliness, price and convenient location. For a longer stop I would want to find a hotel with more facilities.

The chicken wings were surprisingly good though the club sandwich was standard. Breakfast was ok though they were out of a lot of options and didn't seem to refill them that frequently. My room was where I wasn't totally happy. I was directly next to the fire doors and could hear them quite well which wasn't too good when people decided to go in and out around 3am. I could also hear everything going on in the hallway. The beds were stiff as an ironing board. There was also a faint whistling sound from air blowing from somewhere. I also could hear people out in the parking lot. The room was clean though which is a definite plus. I'm not sure if I would stay here again. I'm a pretty light sleeper so it's very important to me that my room is near silent. I'm not sure what the hotels are like in the are so it may not be bad comparatively, but it's not for me.

Our extended family met for a reunion and spent the week crying with joy at how beautiful our old home looks. The new addition of the glass atrium is a modern version of what the original architect had intended when it was built in 1849, but was never realized. The glass room used as a restaurant is brilliant. It has a classy, cozy feel yet allows diners to enjoy an unobstructed view of the rolling hills and fields dotted with grazing sheep, in a climate controlled environment. Well done Wildhive! The hives dotted in the wood behind is an excellent use of the forest and is cleverly done. We toured one cabin and were amazed at how trendy, modern, and comfortable they are. We stayed in my old room which had been updated to top quality standards. I have never slept in such a comfortable bed in my life. Somehow, Callow has been transformed into a hotel but has kept the feel of a home, which is the highest compliment I can pay. We ate a number of meals during our four-night stay and each one was cooked to perfection. The menu had a variety of yummy choices and we toured the diverse offerings. Five star all the way! A toast to the chefs for their talents. But it was the staff that deserve the greatest compliments. They made our family feel like we had come home and they are a credit to the Wildhive team. Everyone was amazing from the initial reservationist, Jane, to the general manager Jeremy, the bartenders, the waitstaff, the housekeepers, and of course, Dup, the right-hand man/valet/everything else, who became a friend. There is now a pub/family restaurant built next door so you don't need to travel too far for food. It's a little outside of the city centre but it only takes 5/10 mins by bus/taxi to get there. It's within walking distance of Riverside retail park which offers a reasonable selection of shops.
