At some…read morefests, I like to make it a tradition to provide some pork buns and the like, but this past year I didn't have the opportunity to do so as the cities we raced in didn't have a chinese bakery available or just plain open when I want to pick it up. Imagine my surprise to find out that there's an asian Supermarket in Kelowna, only 45 min from Penticton, and was on the way down. Curious to see what it was like, I took a gander. As I walked in, the place was actually a good bit larger than what I expected. While by no means the size of say, a T&T Supermarket in a city, it was still a good enough size to offer rows upon rows of honest to goodness asian ingredients and more, such as frozen dim sum and baked goods from Vancouver, utensils, cooking tools and dried spices from the Orient. I honestly didn't expect such a decently supplied store in the middle of Kelowna, especially considering the city's relatively small population and that of the surrounding towns. While I found the baked good prices to be high, when compared to prices I am used to in Calgary, it is imported probably by truck from Vancouver, so that's to be expected. Still, if someone wanted to make a genuinely authentic Chinese dish, it's good to know that they won't be lacking for ingredients.

It's Chicken Schnitzel and it's in a sandwich, but it's pretty good albeit it a bit thin. Served simply with mayo and cheese, it still hits the spot. My husband got the European Donair which he was pleasantly surprised by the sauce, the pickled cabbage (or was it onions...) and the roast beef. It was totally different than a normal donair you'd find at a typical Donair shop. We both added on the soup of the day which was delicious. It's no frills but not hole in the wall by any means. Go up and order at the bar and wait for your order to be delivered to your table. There's seating in the corner with a decent amount of chairs. Very modern inside. This is a market/butcher/deli restaurant. You can browse some neat European goods for taking home as well.

There's a bakery next door that also has a lot of great European rolls/breads and even desserts but also mixed in are North American treats as well so as much as this probably started out as an authentic German bakery and deli, it's now turned into a heavily German influenced bakery and deli. Still, for Kelowna, it's a good find for German products. Like many German delis, prices on packaged goods are obviously high as they are imports but where else are you going to find these products anyhow?
