Have been visiting Missoula for over 25 years since my daughter came to the university here in 1998. Have tried many restaurants and bars here but have never tried the OX. Here for breakfast and trying their breakfast special of chicken fried beef steak with JJ spicy gravy and eggs. Good portion of ck fried beef steak and was good with the hash browns. Hash browns nice but not overly crispy. And eggs over easy were done perfectly . started with coffee. Terrible...dishwater would be Believe it's been around since 1907. Has bunch of rifles above the bar. Bison trophy on wall. If you want pretty don't come here. my breakfast was very good but pass on the coffee even though it's only $1.75 read more

I have lived in Missoula for 35 years and today is my first time eating at the Oxford. The Oxford Saloon & Cafe, located in the heart of downtown Missoula was established in 1883 and is open 24 hours a day, all through the year. The Ox has been open 24 hours a day for so many years that there are no keys for the entrances. Although they don't serve Brains anymore this is still considered a must stop for breakfast, lunch and dinner. At least once. I got the biscuits with what's called the JJ Sauce! (Spicy gravy) Biscuits were awesome and the JJ Sauce is a must try. You have a stop in and try it. read more

If you're looking for a very local spot with the old school Missoula vibe, you've found it! You'd never expect it from the moment you walk in and see slot machines and a bar that turns into a little diner as you look further down the room. Don't fret! The staff is awesome and the food was even better! We got the special, which was the chicken fried steak with such a tasty spicy gravy, and the Bacon mushroom Ox burger. The serving size reminded me of Texas dining, which we loved because we were quite hungry. I don't know how else to convince everyone to come here but as soon as we finished our meal, we were already trying to figure out if we should go back that evening or the next morning... Our entire meal was $27 (2 full orders), which blew our minds. A MUST TRY. Old school diner inside a full service bar with an impressive gun collection, somewhat of a casino, a dollar a call pay phone and can cover it up with a 75 cent rubber from a dispenser in the bathroom. Been 55 years since I ate at this place. It still has the greatest employees!! The food is superb - and a good variety. Mind you, this is a bar so most of the food is grilled. Lettuce is a token offer. But we did not come there to eat vegetables!! ( Well, there are onion rings and hash browns.) prices are very reasonable. And my grandson even complimented the water ! This is a very unique place having a diner and a bar in the same open room. It also has some very old guns behind the bar, which is really cool and neat to look at. As far as the food, it is excellent the eggs tasted great along with the burger, and Gravy. Absolutely the rudest staff and owner I have ever seen. Unbelievable. Their "self proclaimed famous" chicken fried steak was simply not edible. Meat had a sour smell to it and it was so over fried (deep frier) that it resembled an old smelly frisbee. The place is beyond filthy and the seating chairs are all covered in duct tape. Bathrooms...sit on the toilet at your own risk. I do NOT recommend this place. Not only do they not care about customers but their food is rotten, sour and overcooked. read more

The 10 bikers who walked in before me ready to order were also told as well as me, we are done cooking with one couple in the place! Lock the fucking door then! Help is hard to find but between the bikers and me, as I was ordering two 20 dollar ribeyes for my dog and a burger To go, the server would have got great tips from all of us as well. Walk through the door and step back in time. The Oxford is the place your grandfather would take you as a kid cuz it's just cool. The food is spot on and satisfies that craving for some outstanding, old school diner food. It's always busy so don't get put off if you have to wait for service. It's an old restaurant bar on the corner of downtown reminds me of bars back in Pittsburgh I ordered the mushroom half pound ox no matter where you eat the beef taste better in Montana than anywhere else. I was in Missoula for Christmas. Literally every place was closed except the Oxford saloon. I ordered ribeye steak and that steak was probably the best steak I have ever tried. And comparison is to restaurants of San Diego, Las Vegas, Dubai, London, Seattle, Rio and Barcelona. The meat in Montana apparently something special. First I did not understand if that was a beef. I asked the cook and he confirmed that they use located Montana raised beef. It was soooo tender ! Loved it ! And that steak is not 1 pound as advertised. It was at least 1.5 pounds. read more

I am going to make this fast, because the place isn't worth even the time i am losing to make this bad review. January 10th. 5;30 P.M. My girlfriend and I use to come here every now and then Pre Covid. It has always been a hit or miss there, and always bad service. Tonight the cook out did himself with rudenss, barely any service, and horrible food. He made us pay as soon as he brought us the food. The guy literally comes up, says nothing other than "$16.00". We got a house salad with ranch. This salad was old and was obviously sitting for days not hours, wilted and brown. The famous gravy we got was bottom of the barrel, literally, because we saw him scraping it from bottom of the pot. The cheese fries were microwaved, which made them soggy and greasy. I don't know what is going on here, it use to be tolerable, filled with crazy locals.....which was kinda cool. Now it is empty and the Covid has nothing to do with it. Oxford, I am talking to you. You ripped us off $20.00. You better do something about the people you hire.....they are the conducive thread to your sucess. Warning: This is not an establishment to be in, if you are a) a health-food fanatic, b) think that the Grateful Dead or Phish are the greatest group(s) on the planet or C) are looking for an overpriced, pseudo-fancy Nouveau cuisine dining experience. Opened in 1883, and almost serving continuously 24 hours a day since, The Ox dishes up no-nonsense grub, at a low price- what you see is what you get- and it's all quite delicious. While infamously known for their "brains & eggs," this is a dish that's usually ordered and consumed on drunken dares. So don't bother. Instead, I recomend their cheeburger (if you're in a hurry), or the house-specialty, 'JJ's Chicken Fried Steak' (one of the best I've had in my travels). Stopped in here with a friend for a late night bite over the weekend and we had the jalapeño poppers to start then a bacon cheeseburger and fries and it was absolutely delicious!! The meat was superb as it is in most of Montana I found out on this trip and this place happens to be a really cool old style American diner with great food at great prices!
