The food used to be WAY better back in the day. They've really gone downhill since then. I used to come here regularly and took a few years off. Was very disappointed in the taste and quality. What disappointed me more was my partner tried to give feedback and the wait staff chose to talk about us and peek at us from around the corner of the serving station and wait for us to leave rather than address our complaint let alone even acknowledge it. This was my birthday dinner and they completely embarrassed us. I unfortunately do not ever plan to go back here. Not even for drinks after the way the staff responded to my partner tonight. Completely unprofessional and unacceptable. I used to run restaurants. I couldn't imagine my staff treating customers that way even for the dumbest complaint. In a smaller town like Lolo there aren't many restaurants, so we were expecting a wait at this popular steakhouse. But because they have a distillery on site it made the wait more than bearable. We headed up to the distillery and ordered a few of the delicious cocktails. The staff gave us a "by the looks of the parking lot" estimate of our wait time and they were spot on. The restaurant is decorated with tons of antlers and taxidermy of the local wildlife. Their food and specials were fairly priced for the amount we got. Friends ordered the rib eye and shrimp special. We got the porterhouse. They were kind enough to split our entrees given the huge portions. Great service and a fun restaurant! read more

My husband and sons drove ten hours with Lolo's as the main destination on a road trip. They called and were told that the restaurant closed at 9:00. They arrived at 8:50 and the hostess told my son to wait while she got a table. When my husband walked in, she told them all that the restaurant was closed and last seating was at 8:45. The restaurant was packed. My boys are 10 and 8 and said they would order immediately. The hostess was incredibly rude to two little boys who just wanted a Montana dinner. Really disappointing. A place that was once a nice memory for our family is now one that we have a very sour taste for. They had to drive 30 mins in the opposite direction to get dinner because a mean woman with a power trip wouldn't let them order (even to-go). Most rude hostess we have ever encountered in our lives. Upon entering, there was a line wrapped around the building so we thought this MUST be the place. Food was good. Service was excellent. Everyone was welcoming and staff was great. I believe we were greeted at the door by Mr Grunow himself. Very kind. The decor was quintessential Montana. Massive logs, mounted deer, antlers, big horn sheep, wolves, bears etc were nothing short of incredible. The menus with the history was a nice added touch. Driving through town, I got recommendation to come try this place. Boy I love this restaurant. Food is an absolutely delicious. Drinks are awesome and reasonably priced. The ambience is definitely Montana. This is an experience that will bring me back. I also appreciate that they bring you raw veggies instead of bread. I'll start this out by saying that based on the setting, I had built up some magical Montana experience in my head. Sam Elliott was going to stroll out from the kitchen and walk me through the pure Western beef I was selecting - steer's name, diet, exercise regimen...all that. My fault for dreaming it up. That said, I wouldn't call this a premium steakhouse experience. The good: The on-property distillery is putting out some good stuff. I tried the bourbon and the huckleberry-infused bourbon (of which I bought a bottle to take with me). The steak I ordered (12oz ribeye) was cooked nicely - nice sear from the suspended grill in the middle of the dining room, proper medium rare with rendered fat. It had really nice, strong beef flavor. The bad: The side salad (included in the meal) was very plain - iceburg lettuce with dressing and croutons. The steak was not seasoned at all. I had to add seasoning 3 times at the table to get it where it needed to be. The loaded baked potato was not loaded...It came uncut with a plate of fixins for me to build myself. If you want to be a knock-off Longhorn or Texas Roadhouse, you're on the right track. I expect to have to season my own meat and build my own potato like I'm at Golden Corral buffet at those places. If that's what you're going for, then charge those prices. If you're going to charge premium steakhouse prices, then season your meat and serve me composed sides. Chefs don't let us build our own meals - they serve complete dishes. Also, if you're going to decorate your place in taxidermy like a hunting lodge, it might be nice to have some game meat on the menu. A bison steak, elk chops, or venison loin, for example. If you're displaying your exotic trophies, I would expect something different than chicken, pork, and beef. read more

We are in Missoula for 4 days of showing dogs. We have heard rave reviews so we decided to venture to Lolo. Atmosphere is very Montana with wild game trophies hanging on the walls rather lodge like feel. Nice vibe. We were seated immediately and our waitress was friendly and efficient. Drinks ordered came promptly we ordered the shrimp cocktail. Was a bit disappointed that it was sitting on a bead of ice and the shrimp was soggy and no flavor. The cocktail sauce was just okayed. Being a steak house I had higher expectations when it comes to the way my steak is cooked. Even the back of the menu had a detailed description of what rare medium etc are and where the cuts came from on the cow, very informative. I have the Montana steak and requested rare. It was medium rare to even potentially medium. One dining company had the Missoula and requested medium rare and that was definitely medium to verged of well done. My other companion had the filet and again over cooked. We brought it our waitress attention and was basically was dismissive. She never came back and has another associate if we may speak to the manager. Mind you they did offer to recook however we felt so bad that three steaks were going to be thrown out. Manager understood our concerns and provided a small discount. My one dining companion is a rancher from the area and said the quality of beef in general should have been much better. When out of town we try and dine at local restaurants and support local. Missoula is full of chain restaurants and we chose not to go to outback etc. I hope this review helps and maybe a learning opportunity for the chefs. read more

I went for my anniversary and I was stunned at how much I spent for such a bad meal. If I lay down over a $100 I want a good meal. Steak was ok, not seasoned, had to cut and put together your own baked potato, cut up the veggies, that they send for an pre dinner eat, so you can actually eat them and the Caesar salads were dry, warm, and wilted with like five croutons. (We were there at opening.) But that's not the worst. I had raw salmon. "Oh, that's the way we prepare it." I shouldn't have to ask to have my salmon cooked through. And finally. A $12 drink of whipped cream. Had two drinks and came out as sober as I walked in. With a distillery on site, do better. Send the salmon back you say? Well, that always bodes well in a kitchen, plus I had already eaten some and they offered to put it back on the grill where other people's food were being cooked. That's gross. They have a specialty wait staff for drinks (brilliant), friendly and attentive staff and great food and drinks-most created with spirits from the distillery in the back parking lot. I haven't been to this place in many years and was back in town for business and thought I would take a buddy there for steak. I called to see if they take reservations and nope. It sounded like the guy answered the phone from his lawnmower, I had to ask if I called the right number. I get relaxed, but it would be nice to sneak a bit of professional in there. They show as opening at 430, so we were there a few minutes before. Imagine my surprise when the place was already full. I asked, and that was due to the Griz game. I then got, "we tried to get the word out," which apparently worked because all his friends and neighbors were there at 4, although he didn't try when I called to ask about reservations because we heard it gets busy. I'm guessing it was the owner who was greeting people because he was not doing any work, just walking around like a prancing pony. We decided to stay for the 20-minute wait, so sat in the bar area and had a drink. The lady working in there was great, she stopped by at the right times and chatted for a minute but was pretty busy the entire time. People came in after us and were seated, while we sat there forgotten for an hour before we got a table. I understand not seating 2 people at a 4 top to maximize business, but try to follow the list. We watched quite a few people leave when they were not seated anywhere near when they should have been. A group of 4 came in and were told 40 minutes....there were 6 pages of people ahead of them. Everyone there knew that wasn't going to happen. Things stepped up when we got to a table. The waitress was very nice and told us about the special and answered a couple questions while we were deciding what tk eat. They brought out some raw veggies and ranch. Which was a nice way to begin. The salad came out pretty quickly and was ok, nothing special, but nothing wrong with it. Some iceberg lettuce and nice croutons, good dressing, and not too much of it. The potato was well cooked and plenty of butter (I ordered it plain, just extra butter.) The steak was good, but nothing spectacular, not really any seasoning but nicely cooked. Overall, it's a bit over-hyped. The owner (if that indeed was him, which is my bet) seems to care more about strutting around than actually taking care of customers. Fortunately, all the other people there are nice and get things done. I can't imagine ever going back, I go to places for the food and the service, and while the service was good and the food was ok, it isn't something to talk about. That said, a lot of people seemed to love it, so you might too. read more

Honestly one of the worst steaks I've ever had. I normally don't post or review but I do rely on Yelp to find great restaurants. They rarely let me down. However, this time I was incredibly disappointed. I ordered the porterhouse, expecting the best of both worlds. The steak had no flavor, a rubbery frozen texture, and was a super thin cut of meat. This place came highly recommended by a friend. I was staying in Missoula so it was about a 30 minute drive at rush hour from Missoula to the Steahouse. I got the Steak and King Crab. The steak was a 6 oz. top sirloin and was one of the best sirloin steaks I've ever had. Deep, rich flavor. The steaks are cooked over an old style open pit fire grill. The crab was very refreshing and good as well. I appreciated the fresh veggies as a complementary appetizer. The salad was not great. The ranch was very bland and flavorless. Wait staff was very friendly and on the ball. I appreciated this cool Montana steakhouse experience. The site is beautiful and the building was very unique. Lots of very good taxidermy inside from pronghorn, elk, and moose, to wolves and mountain lion. If you are in the Missoula area, I highly recommend coming here. Service in the beginning was great up until we got a fly in our food, after that the attitude was terrible the servers basically rushed us out of the restaurant they didn't say anything other than that it was disgusting to have a fly in the food and that's it, I waited for a check and finally got it, I was going to pay with card and waited for ever for them to come and collect the check, I ended up having to come up to the front to pay, not to mention it was my sister's birthday and we wanted to have a nice dinner out but this evening was ruined by the staff and bugs inside our food, big thumbs down for me!! read more

We've been coming here for the last two years, food and service is usually amazing! Not tonight. For my 30th birthday my husband surprised me with a visit here, so I did not bring my ID. When we arrived here, the host was super friendly and acknowledged our 1 year old son. We got seated right away. The host got us crayons and a high chair. The server seemed fine at first, but her service was disappointing. After our food server introduced herself, our cocktail server came to our table. My husband ordered a beer and was not ID'd (We are basically the same age). Once I ordered my drink, the cocktail waitress asked for my ID. We told her I didn't bring it since the drive there was a surprise, since we were celebrating my birthday. Over the past two years since we've been coming here, I've never gotten ID'd.
