I attended my first class with the Paint Bar yesterday and couldn't be more delighted. I'm impressed how they were able to quickly bring the program online in light of the unexpected challenges of the virus. They even offered to deliver the supplies until shipping was available so people could participate. The teacher broke the steps down to simplify a complex painting, and carefully demonstrated each of the techniques. They even broke the class out into breakout rooms so friends could work together from home. Overall, it was a terrific experience. read more

The Paint Bar is a lot of fun, and no matter how little talent you have (I can't draw a circle without Powerpoint), you can indeed create a masterpiece (ok, maybe it will only sell for $2 at your garage sale in 10 years, but your very small children will be impressed). I suggest arriving 30 minutes early, so that you don't get stuck in the line waiting for paints and can focus on importing things like buying a glass of wine. It also helps to be seated near the small stage in front so that you can easily see the example completed painting on the wall. They rotate through a selection of different ones, which are specified on the website when you buy your tickets, so don't pick a class that will paint a lame one like the happy dolphin! Also, you need to see the instructor, who will demonstrate painting an additional example on the stage. The instructor was quite funny, and fairly clear in explaining the individual steps one by one, although she went pretty quickly. The full 2 hours are necessary to complete the painting, and if you fall behind, you will miss some of the tricks or paint combinations. If you bring a date, be sure to praise how much better his or her piece is than yours, over and over again. Artists are sensitive, and who knows, you might get lucky later. If you have talent, maybe your painting will end up in Somerville's Museum of Bad Art, and not in a garage sale! read more

I had only done 1 previous paint night when I went to the Paint Bar with my friend. So, obviously, I kept comparing the two. And Paint Bar wins, hands-down. At my previous experience, you picked a seat and the paint & aprons were there. Here, Jill (the owner/founder, who is SO friendly) shows you to your reserved spot and gives you a plate. You then fill up the plate yourself with the paint (following the directions of how many pumps/color) and get your own apron. This gets you immediately involved and mingling with other painters. My previous paint night gave you 1 brush (which was pretty thick) and that was it. Paint Bar gives you 5 different brushes (which the instructor explains) and we use each one. You can also just go up and get more paint whenever you want, as opposed to getting the owner's attention and waiting until she brings you more. Ari, the teacher, was young, enthusiastic, hilarious and talented. He helped us (especially the Type-A people, such as moi) relax and not get so uptight. And the best parts of my painting are the ones I did when I let go and just had fun. And the music he played was very fun. Positives: they had several of the example paintings around the room, so that everyone could see it. And Ari was standing on a raised platform while painting, and had a huge piece of white paper to show us examples of what to do. Candy and water are only $1 (I don't know how much the alcohol is, and I think soda is only $1 too). Negatives: the stools are not only a bit high for the tables (and I'm short), but are SUPER uncomfortable after 2 hours. My booty was KILLING me. Everyone had a blast - including me! I came here with my mom last Wednesday after we won a Paint Bar gift certificate from a silent auction for one of our favorite local nonprofits, Girl Scouts! So thank you to Paint Bar first of all for supporting a great cause. My mom and I picked this class since you get one free glass of wine for 21+ attendees on Wednesday (#WineWednesday). We got aprons to wear and we set up our palettes based on the number of pumps of each shade of paint listed. We could see and hear the instructor clearly. It was relatively easy to follow along, however sometimes I felt a bit rushed filling in some of the larger portions of the painting. I almost wish we had either a slightly smaller canvas or a little bit more time, so I didn't have to hustle quickly to fill in the background before we moved on. I wanted to come here for date night, but the new guy I was seeing said painting wasn't his thing... that relationship didn't last long. I then decided to ask my good friend to go with me and she was as excited as I was about the whole thing. We went on a Friday night and we were the first ones there. We were immediately greeted by the instructor - I apologize I don't remember her name. She was so friendly and explained how paint night worked. Because we were the first one there we got to choose where to sit. About 10 minutes later, more people started showing up... couples, singles, families. It was great to see everybody so excited and wanting to learn something fun. The instructor was wonderful! She went through each step not once, but twice, and she went around the room to ask if anyone needed help. She played great music that made the experience even better. They do sell wine, beer, water, and snacks. I got a beer which was $6.00. People around us drank wine. They even raffled off a bottle of wine at the end of the night to those who "liked" them on Facebook or other social media outlets. My sister took me to The Paint Bar today as a suprise early birthday gift since I'm going to be the dirty thirty and I wasn't sure where she was taking me or what we're going to do. I arrived, and there was a lot of cool art, great music was on and a wine bar right by the entrance. Yes, I was excited. I'm always up for something new. I was a tad bit nervous because i'm a virgin when it comes to painting. I have to say that the artist did an excellent job guiding and navigating us amatures into Van Gogh himself. I've wanted to come here for a while, but just haven't made the time before, which is too bad because it's a lot of fun. I came with my wife & 2 friends to paint the Frog Pond scene. Not my first choice, but we based it more on date than anything. I'm really surprised by how easy it wound up being and just how great the staff & other painters were. Something which really stood out for me was how gracious the instructor was when a couple came in almost an hour late (the roads were pretty bad that night). There was no exasperation in her voice as she welcomed them & guided them to settle in. During our break, she gave the couple some personal attention to help them catch up. That's service you don't see every day. It's definitely a little hokey, but it's a great time, especially with a few friends. Don't come with a super large crowd though (unless you're booking for a private party), it gets a little unwieldy & can be annoying to the other patrons. read more

This past weekend I just celebrated my Birthday with the "Paint Bar" with 25 of my friends and family. Like I would have it anywhere else!! No way! The atmosphere is nice. Its a little cramped though. There isnt much elbow space between people which makes it a little hard to paint sometimes. The instructors are friendly and helpful. They use a music streaming app, Spotify I believe, and take requests which helps get everyone involved. They also do a raffle which is fun. The drinks are a little expensive. The wine I had was so-so and the snacks (candy/chips) were way too overpriced but the great thing is YOU CAN BRING IN YOUR OWN FOOD/SNACKS. There is a pizza spot right next door you can grab a slice at during the intermission which is nice.I've been here 2 times and both times I has a wonderful time. Long Story Short.... This place is AWESOME. Probably the best date spot in the city. Short Story Long.... The other day my friends and I were looking for something completely new and fun to do and we randomly heard from a friend about this new place that opened called the Paint Bar. The story with the Paint Bar is that for some super inexpensive price, (I forget what it was in the end but I think it was like 35 bucks or something) they have someone teach you how to do famous painting, give you all the paints, canvas, etc you need, and when you are done you get to walk away with your own little work of art. Going into it, i was initially kind of hesitant cause the last time I painted anything I was in 7th grade, but between the awesome instructor (Jackie was HILARIOUS) and the fact that me and my friends all had a glass of wine/beer in our hands, I must say it is exponentially more fun than I ever would have expected. We report our experience in which we believe that manager/owner Samara(?) took advantage of an unfortunate situation where my non-English speaking nanny racked up a $233 bill within 1.5 hours, because she did not understand the "rules" of the place (i.e. we must pay for each piece that the child paints). We had called to talk to Samara about this situation and let her know that her staff might have been able to clarify to the nanny that each item will cost money. The manager defended herself by name-dropping a celebrity and stating that she wouldn't want to insult wealthy nannies whose "norm" is to rack up bills similar to ours. We understand that we are financially responsible at the end of the day and have already paid the bill, but this manager's lack of empathy was remarkable. read more

The staff here are EXTREMELY Friendly and down to earth. they also appear to already know a lot of their customers as they keep coming back which is one of the best things for a business. I absolutely adore the Paint Bar! Jill and Jackie have really hit the jackpot in terms of location, concept and variety of paintings. You need to sign up quickly because some of the more popular paintings (funky tree, wine, etc) tend to fill up fast! The atmosphere is one of fun, relaxed and totally creative. Everyone is encouraged to just enjoy themselves and leave those Type A personalities at the door. Even if you don't have a creative bone in your body (or at least don't think you do!), The Paint Bar will walk you through creating your own little masterpiece. I am a crap painter. I have no experience painting at all. I came into this situation feeling a little bit scared because I thought that my painting would look like a 2 year olds scribbles compared to everybody else. Boy was I WRONG Most people came in with no painting experience. The teacher (Mia) was jolly and excited about her job. She created a very positive/anti-stress atmosphere. I had a great time, and so did my friends. I came out with a painting that didn't look like crap. The painting that are offered are clearly ones that are up to interpretation. Mia didn't allow us to be negative about her paintings. She played great music too. The drinks were priced okay. Pretty normal price for the drinks. The sangria that night was POTENT! haha. Went here for the first time! I'm not much of a painter, but wanted to surprise my Girlfriend because she loves to paint. So we go in, we were greeted by Arianna who was super friendly and fun. She told us exactly what to do and how to get started. We got comfortable and also got some wine from the counter where the owner was. She was also very friendly and nice. Once it was time to paint, Arianna taught the whole class and did an amazing job, very clear and concise instructions. My painting actually came out great because of how well she taught. I scheduled a corporate team building event here with 11 people to create a mural. They require 2 weeks to create the custom mural but were so accommodating that they had it done for us in the time that we needed which was a little more than a week. We had a ton of murals to choose from and found the perfect one for our company. All of the staff was so friendly and helpful in the planning of our event and I can't thank them enough. Even after the event, the staff was helpful; I needed to have my invoice changed and they did it right away. This event was so much less expensive than we had expected (and less than paint nite) and so worth it! Our instructor Meghan was truly a pleasure to have around and was very supportive throughout the whole process. My whole team had a fantastic time and 11/11 said that they would go back on their own. What a great spot this is, and such a cool thing! I discovered this place through co-workers and the ladies of my family all went together last month. We all loved it! Such a unique thing to do with a group. The mother and daughter team are great! The daughter was our instructor and what a riot she was! She was easy to follow, kept us laughing, and played some great pop hits in between steps. The whole process takes about 2-2.5 hours, is normally $35... no set up, or clean up required. I went here on a company outing and was not sure what to expect. It was a lot of fun! Everything from atmosphere to supplies to staff and instruction was spot-on. There was a lot of grumbling and mumbling about how no one knew how to paint and how disastrous their paintings were going to look... it's also pretty ingenious that there's a small bar where you can purchase some alcohol and break the tension and get painting! Even if you don't drink, you can sit back and enjoy the music and admire everyone else's work. At the back are bottles of acrylic paints, the front of the studio is filled with tables, stools, and pre-stretched canvases on easels. Depending on the painting-of-the-day, you have a pre-determined number of colors and amounts to choose. They'll guide you through everything step by step, so by the end of the class everyone's paintings will look similar, but individually unique. read more

I have to admit it's a creative - and good - idea for a business. I came here with my coworkers on a staff outing as the guests of our Director. I was one of only two men in the class, and the other looked like he's retired...which did make me feel a little self-conscious, but I got over it. This is definitely not a place for a bachelor party or "boys' night out," but guys, if you're looking to impress a date or score some points with your lady, I think you should consider coming here. Don't worry, they have a good beer selection. Our instructor, Jackie, kind of made it feel like I was getting painting lessons from Kathy Griffin. She definitely has a "silly and quirky" personality, but it's all part of the experience. She showed an example of the painting that she was going to teach us how to create, and I didn't believe her...but she did it, she taught me how to recreate it. This is NOT an elaborate painting course, it's more like participating in an episode of Bob Ross' Joy of Painting or something like that.
