The blank canvas for your creative juices.
    Jennifer P.

I have so much fun in The Paint Spot. It's an artist's blank canvas. They have every kind of supply you could want - water and oil paints, pastels, paper, pencils, markers, artists magazines, how-to books, crafty kits and more. I came in here with no real intention to buy anything. I was just feeling a little creative. It didn't take much to get the creative juices flowing. I saw some colourful clay blocks that can be molded like Plasticine then baked in the oven to harden, and had a Martha Stewart moment (but cooler). I bought 5 blocks in different colours and plan to make tiny yoga figurines doing different poses, then baking them and giving them as Christmas gifts to my fellow yogis. Then I saw a mosaic coaster making kit on sale, and immediately started looking for tile clippers, but they didn't have them, which was kind of annoying, since the kit doesn't come with them. But the sales lady was super helpful and looked up a place I might get them and wrote down the address for me. Yay, projects! Nothing better than a good session of arts 'n' crafts to put me in the holiday spirit.

I am not an artist-- nor do I pretend that I am one, but I am quite sure that this is where the artists shop for art supplies. You can get anything here, lower end or higher end stuff. My boyfriend and I went here in search for some paints and a canvas and the people who work here are very knowledgeable. They were committed to getting us the best deal and saving us the most money.

I like Paint Spot. They carry certain items that I haven't seen at Michaels or DeSerres. For example, they sell tubes of Van Gogh watercolors that are way cheaper than tubes of Winsor & Newton. The store also sells tubes of gouache paint that come in a wider selection of colors. Another thing I observed are the prices. While some items are reasonably priced others are too expensive. For instance, I can go to Michaels and get Arches watercolor paper half-priced with a coupon. I have a 24-pan Koi watercolor travel paint set that I got off Amazon for $25. At Paint Spot this same item is locked up behind a glass case with $60 price sticker. I know there is a reason prices are set the way they are, but Art supplies can be pricey and I like to look for deals. However, I still like this store and I will continue shopping here for my art supplies.

I had a horrible experience at this store. I was ignored and staff was more interested in talking to each other or stocking the shelves.

Review Highlights - The Paint Spot Fine Art Materials

It was a blast :-) Kim, the teacher, was unbelievably awesome with my kiddos and I would not hesitate to come back here for any art class taught by her!

I really like the new location as there is lots of parking, the store is spacious and bright inside and the staff is very friendly and helpful. The wall on the right side of the entrance changes with difference themes periodically. The store is laid out so there is lots of room to look around without getting in other people's way. The paper is displayed by theme along with stickers and embellishments. They carry some unique papers like printed acetate. Ink, markers, ribbon, stamps and die cuts are located near the back of the store. What I was so excited about was to see stamped images on watercolour paper. There was a selection of different images and greetings for cards, each sheet was $1.79. The images can be coloured with Copic markers, watercolour pencils or aqua painters. You cannot walk in and not buy anything. If you spend over ten dollars and you get one scrap buck which does not expire. They offer Saturday crops as well as the occasional weekend crop. They had more dies, more stencils and to my amazement they even carried gilding flakes ! The staff are wonderful and friendly. I was also impressed with how good their website is. I spent a fair bit of money there but was very pleased that I was able to buy products that even Michael's doesn't carry such as Tim Holtz Distress Oxide ink pads and the inkers to go with them. The selection of dies to be used with Cuttlebug's, BigShot's etc. are AMAZING ! I LOVE this store!

But the experience with the service/repair dept. or in this case person was something else. After having been misled and purchased a part that didn't solve the issue with our machine, contacting the manufacturer ourselves to diagnose what was wrong with the machine (which should have been the job of the repair person - troubleshooting) we finally found out it to be the timer relay. Dropped off the machine to get fixed in August and not even 4 months later the same part needs replacing. After contacting Halfords and informing them that the machine is down again, it took 3 days to get a reply which included a statement that the part that had been installed might be faulty. As this is a machine that is in use daily we opted to buy a machine that was available to us immediately to continue our work. So today we were told we have to pay for the part and the shipping. When I questioned it and refused to pay I was schooled on "how warranty on electrical items work and as I bought a machine somewhere else, to go and let these people repair it". We have never been treated that way at Halford in the past. Maurice was always helpful and pleasant to deal with and always found a solution. Today's treatment was the opposite of customer service.

I found my stand and a ton of smudge sticks right near the front door. I didn't need any smudge sticks but I know where I will go when I need them next. When I went to pay for my purchase I was pleasantly surprised to see products from Mother Earth Essentials as I have only found them at the Royal Alberta Museum until today. I would give 5 stars but they are closed on Saturdays. I was told today by staff due to the owners religious beliefs that is their day of rest which is cool, I give them credit for their convictions.

She explained that everything was FREE and the items need to be weighed prior to leaving the store. The items were organized into categories and many of the bins were clearly labelled. They had shopping carts available. There was plenty of space to move around. Some items were picked over but I was able to find some cool stuff. The selection of items depends on what's been donated. You need time and patience to look through everything. Some items were in good condition while others were not. I found a Happy Birthday banner which I've been wanting to buy at the party store and was happy to find here for free. They also had various tablecloths, weights to anchor helium balloons, streamers, treat bags and more! The Christmas decor was also great! I found some cute little plush tree ornaments. They even had Christmas trees! There were decorations for Halloween, Valentine's Day, and St. Patrick's Day. I needed a cylinder container for a craft project. I was hoping to find something I could use here. Again this was something I almost bought at the craft store. I was happy to save some money by finding the perfectly sized container here. They had books, photo frames, office supplies and more. I love that this place helps people to reuse and recycle items that might otherwise be thrown into landfills. My favourite item was a musical Grinch toy that was missing batteries and the battery cover. I knew there was a chance it was broken. I'm happy to report that the toy did indeed work when I put some batteries in!! What a find! I'll be back!
