I don't buy a lot of stuff here, but it's the first place I go when I need anything crafts-y like. The coolest thing I bought was fabric printer paper. I like paint pens as well. I have not been to any of their art classes, but they always look well attended. The angle parking out front is always full. Absolutely blown away by this little Gem hidden just off of Whyte Avenue on 81st Ave between 100 and 101 street. Popped in today as part of Yelp's Shop Local campaign for Christmas! My kiddos got to partake in a card making craft that included print making and layering with paints! It was a blast :-) Kim, the teacher, was unbelievably awesome with my kiddos and I would not hesitate to come back here for any art class taught by her! Although I'm not an artist myself, I like to come here for quick supplies like craft glue if it's urgent. You can tell there's a real art subculture happening here; I usually hear the staff talking to other customers about their latest project, or they'll ask you what kind of art you do. They have a wall full of all kinds of paints, more than the average person like me can comprehend. Their canvasses and other textiles are all kept in the shop's back room, and the friendly staff will help you find what you're looking for there. I have so much fun in The Paint Spot. It's an artist's blank canvas. They have every kind of supply you could want - water and oil paints, pastels, paper, pencils, markers, artists magazines, how-to books, crafty kits and more. I came in here with no real intention to buy anything. I was just feeling a little creative. It didn't take much to get the creative juices flowing. I saw some colourful clay blocks that can be molded like Plasticine then baked in the oven to harden, and had a Martha Stewart moment (but cooler). I bought 5 blocks in different colours and plan to make tiny yoga figurines doing different poses, then baking them and giving them as Christmas gifts to my fellow yogis. Then I saw a mosaic coaster making kit on sale, and immediately started looking for tile clippers, but they didn't have them, which was kind of annoying, since the kit doesn't come with them. But the sales lady was super helpful and looked up a place I might get them and wrote down the address for me. Yay, projects! Today's Shop Local route for Yelpers included a card-making adventure, which the kiddos loved, and teacher Kim was so patient and made it such fun for them. We got to choose a huge sheet of handmade paper to take home as well, and I can't wait to chose a project for mine. One of my favourite giftables at the store would be water colour journals, with great thick pages, in a variety of sizes, to journal your life in paint. Gotta get me one! The Paint Spot is really a complete art store. From easels to canvases, acrylics to watercolors, books to classes and workshops .... and a lot more. I'm not particularly into art work as such but do find it very relaxing to concentrate on something without it amounting to anything more than a hobby. The location is also perfect. It's like an old warehouse building on 81st Ave in the east Whyte ave area. Not too much vehicular traffic there and I hope that's not something that works against them. The high ceilings and wall hangings all around makes for a very warm and inviting studio feel. The other good thing is that they have variety. From the cheaper end of painting tools, watercolors, pencils, paints to the expensive varieties. Thus, it makes for a good visit whether you're an amateur or a pro. I ended up buying some liquid acrylics and along with acrylic gel. Will try and work on some abstract forms when I get some time do so. It's worth mentioning that if you check in with your yelp app (on an smartphone) you can receive 20% off on art supplies. Not a bad deal. I am in love with The Paint Spot! I don't consider myself a fabulous artist, but I've taken an art class or two and it's one of my hobbies. As a "just a hobby" sort of thing, I'm not an expert on brush types or the differences between brands. That's where the awesome staff at The Paint Spot come in. I like Paint Spot. They carry certain items that I haven't seen at Michaels or DeSerres. For example, they sell tubes of Van Gogh watercolors that are way cheaper than tubes of Winsor & Newton. The store also sells tubes of gouache paint that come in a wider selection of colors. Another thing I observed are the prices. While some items are reasonably priced others are too expensive. For instance, I can go to Michaels and get Arches watercolor paper half-priced with a coupon. I have a 24-pan Koi watercolor travel paint set that I got off Amazon for $25. At Paint Spot this same item is locked up behind a glass case with $60 price sticker. I know there is a reason prices are set the way they are, but Art supplies can be pricey and I like to look for deals. However, I still like this store and I will continue shopping here for my art supplies. read more

I am not an artist but my guy is so despite my lack of talent, I still frequently find myself in The Paint Spot looking at paints and brushes. This store is stocked with everything an artist might need. They have canvas, many many many types of paint, moulding gel, brushes, books, paper and models. I really enjoy what comes out of these visits even if i really don't have much to do with it! The staff are very helpful as they often have to explain to us the differences between acrylic paints and why one is worth more than the other. Well I ordered online linen canvas and paid for it and never received an email to say whether or not the order was received so I had to call back 4 days later to see what was happening . Well today I get a phone call telling me that there was a large price discrepancy from their website to what the price was and they forgot to adjust their price online ( a 10.00 price difference ) I fail to see anything positive out of this - if you have a website and are selling product online , then should you not be making sure that pricing is correct - BAD management as far as I am concerned . I won't be dealing with them again as the price the should be honoured ( any other retail store has to honour wrong pricing ) read more

Went to The Paint Spot today. In town on business to talk at a conference. I was so very surprised at the shop as soon as I walked in. I was the kid in a candy store and for a bit went up and down every isle just taking it all in. Took a few things to the check out counter so I did not have to carry stuff while looking and pawing over all the goodies. That is where my interaction with the staff happened. Got a heads up on specials and we got to talk about product and what might work best for my applications. I could have stayed a bit longer than I did, but I had a cab waiting for me. This place is amazing. Everything a person could ever want for all kinds of visual arts is right there. The staff know their stuff (artists themselves very often) and even the little gallery is always interesting. Quality of products is always high even for an artist of modest means. Their enthusiasm for what they do is also evident by the way they address your needs with probing questions and helpful suggestions. I've been a patron since it used to be right on 105 and Whyte Ave. Regardless of the art medium, the staff is always very knowledgeable. Last year, Paint Spot was extremely helpful in helping me gather materials for a pastel chalk project I had in mind for WhatIsArtJam.ca. I've done a lot of sketches, but have never attempted anything on canvas, so I was nervous. She showed me samples of canvas paper to see what textures chalk could create. It was like having a buddy who is helping you to shop! Each step of the shopping process was inspiring ideas. (If you plan to start a chalk pastel project, I highly recommend the chalk pencils to accentuate lines!) I explained that I have never done a serious art project that gets mounted. She helped me walk through the process of cutting and gluing (or staple-gun). When I dropped off my project for submission, I explained it to one of the staff members that I couldn't get the chalk protected after multiple coats of protective acrylic spray. I am absolutely WOW-ed by the way they handled my art and marked it fragile; protecting it with wrapping paper. read more

A nice enough store with a fairly decent selection. I do warn you however, their markup on some products is pretty silly! I saw a fountain pen that I own and had paid $25 (new) for being sold for $45! So do some price comparison shopping beforehand. I did really like their selection, and they store is VERY clean and organized! It makes it easy to find what you're looking for. The staff is hit or miss. One gentleman working there was very friendly and helpful while another lady looked down right irritated that I wanted to pay and she had to stop working on her personal project to ring me up. read more

The store is deceptively big and has a TON of stock so if you don't see what you need don't leave! Ask someone to help you because the staff always knows where everything is. Very involved with the community with the Whyte Ave Artwalk, great folks. I am deeply saddened that they changed their Old Strathcona discount from 20% to 10% but it's still nice. So I love the fact that they offer the opportunity to learn new things here. For example I got to learn about the techniques involved in marbling paper for book endpapers when I visited during Yelp Shops Local this year. That said, I find the shop intimidating. All the art supplies seem so ultra-high-end, and there does not seem to be the types of items here that I can feel free to potentially destroy in the process of my making something so there's that. But the staff are kind and helpful so if/when I get the courage to ask them questions about things, I think they'll be super helpful. I guess part of it is that I get overwhelmed as an adult in a store where I could conceivably get all art/craft-sy! I'm more used to seeing such items relegated to a corner somewheres and my selecting things based on the fact that they are the only options. So really, this place is a gem, or it would be if I stopped thinking that only "real" artists shopped here and actually came up with a project for which to buy supplies. read more

Michaels is even worse, even with a coupon it's cruddy canvas and more $. They have cleaned up since the move but being an artist I can't afford to pay the kind of money they want.
