My experience started by being shown where my assigned seating was. Next, I went to the shelf where there was a pretty decent selection of ceramic trees to choose from. I had prepaid via Eventbrite for a $50 tree. When I saw a bigger and fancier tree, I chose to upgrade to the $100 tree. I just had to pay the price difference. After this, I received a brief explanation of a couple of paint options I had to choose from and then I started painting! This wasn't set up like one large ceramic painting class. People came and went at different times. Each group that came in would get separate instructions by the staff members. This worked out because painting times definitely varied. I honestly underestimated how long it would take to paint a ceramic tree. I think I must've painted a total of 6 coats of paint. It's partly because of the paint option I chose. I required a base coat to ensure my tree would come out shiny dark green. It took me about about 3 hours to paint! I wanted to make sure all the crevices of my tree were covered. I did this activity after work on a Wednesday night. It was a fun way to unwind and chat with my friend. However, in the future, I would prefer to do this on a weekend instead. I finished painting right before the store closed around 9pm. It would've been more relaxing if I knew I didn't have to work the next day. Once I was finished, I painted my initials under the tree. I was told it would take about a week for my tree to be ready for pick up. When I was reunited with my tree, I was super happy with the result! The wiring for the light bulb was inserted. Light bulb not included. I also received a bag of multicoloured mini plastic bulbs and a plastic star topper to decorate my tree. Overall, I had a good time here! I would definitely consider coming back to paint something else. The staff were helpful and the products are good quality. I know I could've easily bought a ceramic tree instead of painting one. NEVER GO HERE! Unfortunately I have to give them a 1 star. The initial experience was wonderful - I paid for myself and 8 other family members (including 4 kids) to come spend an afternoon painting pottery. We all had a fabulous time. Sadly when I went to pick up my order my own piece and 1 of the kids' pieces was not included (I didn't realize this until I got home). I called as soon as I realized that afternoon, spoke to the owner (can't remember her name but she had an Aussie or New Zealand accent) and she apologised profusely saying that one of her temporary Christmas staff members must have given the pieces (2 mugs) away but that she would happily give me a credit for them. I wasn't super happy that the pieces were lost (considering I had already paid for them) but I was satisfied with her solution. I asked what the expiration would be on the credit and she assured me that no matter what there would be no time limit, no expiration at all and that I could come whenever and the credit would be waiting for me. Well it's been 2 years and I called to verify that my credit was still there as I wanted to come and use it and I was just told that they no longer have it. The worker I spoke to was absolutely lovely and super apologetic but the results remain the same. The owner hired staff that gave away 2 pieces that I paid for and the credit that I was promised (which is the very least that should have been given) was not honoured. I will never be returning here and I will absolutely be telling everyone I know not to come here! read more

I came to Crankpots back in October for a birthday party. Now that I have the finished piece in my hand ( I almost forgot it was there!) I finally feel like I can do a review on the whole experience. We were greeted right as we were coming in the door and the staff working were friendly enough. We might have come on a good night or something because I honestly got no sense of attitude from any of them. They all know what they are doing when it comes to pottery and will give you a detailed explanation of how you can improve your pieces and things to watch out for so perhaps that might come across as an attitude to some...who knows. Anyhow I was quite struck with all the different pieces there were to choose from and all the different price points. If your not that creative or trying this for the first time and unsure it's definitely nice to be able to pick something out for $15-$20 as opposed to a larger more expensive piece. As many reviewers have mentioned it is cash only but there is a bank machine at the nearby convenience store if it slips your mind. Don't forget to make your colors pop you need to use three coats of every paint you use on your piece! When it comes to color as well they also have a great range to choose from and a handy little color chart on the wall that shows you what it looks like once it leaves the bottle and meets your masterpiece. All in all it was a great experience and it was nice to try something new versus spending the same amount of money if not more at the theater or one of our usual hangouts. I loved it and im not all that artistic so I really feel anybody else can pick up a brush and love it too. read more

I am convinced this is a scam. It's a cash only place but I was not told that so I had to walk across the street to take out cash from an atm. When I got back the staff had told me the wrong price and made me go take out more money. I was annoyed because that is now 2 atm charges I had to pay above and beyond the price. My partner and I made 2 mugs and it was 100!! This place adds on fees like crazy. I was also disappointed because the staff would not let me use the glass paint. They would not go get the paint for me and made up excuses. We were told it would take 2 weeks for our projects to be done which is ridiculous. I guess they don't even call you when your project is out of the kiln either. Honestly just go somewhere else, trust me. read more

I finally went here for the very first time to celebrate a friend's birthday. It really was a great experience: we washed up, picked out our ceramics an paid for them (the firing and glazing fee plus the cost of the ceramic is what we paid for -- there are deals for children's parties and whatnot). You MUST pay with cash here, which is inconvenient, but given that they're trying to keep their costs affordable, not entirely unexpected. Just be warned in advance! I painted a lovely travel mug (which came with a lid) that I'm currently using at work. I probably should have painted more of the inside of the mug, as the travel lid does mean that it is easy to stain the ceramic with my beverages where it scrapes the inside of the mug, but otherwise I'm really happy with my first painting job and hope to return here someday as a date activity or otherwise. Staff explained to us the process of painting and the importance of using at least 3 coats of paint. In addition they are discontinuing their speckled paints (my guess is that they can no longer get them as easily) so there was limited amounts of those available. I think next time I do this I will try to do a more detailed paint job than I did this time, and use some more fine paint brushes. It was busy while I was there with a little boy complimenting my painting when he wasn't busy painting his ceramic item. The joy of receiving my item after it was fired and glazed the following week and seeing just how the colours darkened (there are examples of how each paint colour looks on the wall by the paints) was amazing. I also appreciated the fact that they wrapped each item in newspaper and an appropriately sized reused box for transport home. Conveniently located on Whyte Avenue and on good bus routes, this place is a great place to visit to paint and spend quality time with family or friends. read more

My friend Ellen and I went to Crankpots on a Sunday afternoon to paint some pottery. Isn't that why people go here? We were greeted, given the run down of how things work, and were set to make our masterpieces. After careful choosing, we were on the road to artistic brilliance. Due to my friend's time constraint, we had to come back another day, which worked quite well. Crankpots has incredible flexibility when it comes to multiple visits for pieces. Our items turned out beautifully. It's always a nail biter waiting for the finished product, and I was actually quite impressed! Cash only caught us off guard, but that's okay because there is cash machines around. Location is great and it isn't a bad idea to call ahead and book a couple spots. If you are crafty, you will love Crankpots. The original paint-your-own-ceramics studio in Edmonton. First off, you can choose any piece of pottery to paint. They are all individually priced and items range from mugs to plates to ornaments and more. Depends how creative you want to be! After choosing your piece, you pay for the piece, the studio fee ($10 for adults) and glazing fee ($3 per piece). I would suggest painting on a weekday (10am-9pm) for free studio fees. Then it is painting time! The staff are really great at giving instructions and guidance as needed. You can just paint, paint and paint some more. Also, I have brought in food in the past which is great when you need a snack. If you don't finish painting your ceramic, you can always come in at a later date to finish your masterpiece. You can make reservations in advance, which I would definitely recommend as it can be quite busy. Yet, last time I made reservations, the manager had scheduled the booking for the wrong date. Would like to give 5 stars for a fun way to spend an afternoon but pricing structure deters me. The good: Great selection of everything from big to small and function to decor. Easy choices for the expert or toddler. The bad: Was surprised to find it was cash only upon arrival. Who's cash only these days?? Was sent across the street to use the Mac's ATM ($3.15 charge btw) took out enough to cover the pieces we picked out. Upon check out turns out the pricing written on each piece isn't all-inclusive. Was surprised to have been charged an additional $20 for a "studio fee". Total came to over $100....and didn't have enough cash. Kind of put a sour ending on our otherwise fun afternoon. read more

This is a place I normally wouldn't walk into, unless I was forced by an army of orcs, or my best friends birthday...whichever you feel is more realistic. Not because it's a horrible establishment, but because I have no patience to create an awesome masterpiece, and am completely lacking in the creativity department. Plus, I'm really clumsy. Moving along! There are white ceramic pieces that line the walls, with decent prices written on them in pencil (considering that price includes paint and kilning fees). There's also a bookshelf that has a million and a half colours (okay, not really but it feels that way when you're trying to pick which 2 colours to paint a dopey dragon when there's at least 45 of them). Anyways, we had booked a table for 12 people for 2 hours, which was enough time for me...but if you're the type who actually sketches out what you're going to paint before hand, you'll probably have to come back to finish the job. I had to wait a few days to get my dopey dragon back, because kilning takes about a week. All in all, it was a good time. As a regular customer at Crankpots I feel comfortable saying this is not the place for everyone. The owner and her sidekick are incredibly sarcastic, combative and outspoken. It's part of the vibe. They'll even tell you they don't like kids one minute then fuss over the babies and joke with the older kids the next. What ever you do, don't get the owners accent wrong! In fact, don't even make a guess unless your particularly tone-inclined. Where is she from? Nope, I'm not telling you just like nobody told me and I was left to fend for myself once I got it incredibly wrong. It was a great laugh. Do you need to be artistic to go here? No! Will you have fun? If you aren't an uptight person and can handle a little poking and making fun then yes, you'll have an amazing time. Fridays is the cheapest to go, maybe call first to make sure there are no reservations, though, as they tend to get busy. I hadn't been to Crankpots in years and so when my mom asked if I would go with her to paint on a Tuesday afternoon I jumped at the opportunity spend some quality time with my momma and make something fun. We walked in and there were only a few people in shop. We weren't greeted when we arrived, and I mistook some customers as workers, which was kind of awkward - but the owner (I think her name is Shelly) introduced herself and got us all set up. They are a cash only business, so make sure you bring enough or you will have to go find an ATM like I did. Picking the ceramic is harder that you would think! There are tons of options of all sizes and difficulty. There are a lot of decorative pieces, but also plates and mugs and jugs - things that might serve more of a purpose. My mom was torn with between doing a mug and a garden gnome, but went with the mug because she would be able to get in painted in one sitting. That's the other great thing about Crankpots is that there is no rule that you must finish your piece in one sitting. As long as you don't come back on a weekend (at their busiest time) you can add bits here and there to your piece. Once we got painting it was really very relaxing. We both kind of got into our zone, listened to the radio and were left alone to do our work. You could use stencils, sponges and stamps as guides, or freeform designs yourself. There was a great selection of paints, but most of the brushes had seen better days. There didn't seem to be any really big ones to do an overall coat, or really fine ones for writing or details. We were there for a few hours and it seemed to go by really quickly! Afterwards we handed off the pieces to Shelly and were told to pick them up in a week I decided on a piggy bank (see photo!) and I think it turned out really well! The ceramic, the paint and the firing all came to about $35. Definitely a reasonable price to pay to do something for a couple hours and keep what you make. I don't consider myself to be particularly artistic, but there is something very soothing and fun about paiting a pre-made ceramic creation. I took the 3 kids I care for to Crankpots one afternoon for something different to do - and it was a lot of fun! The studio was quiet, with lots of big tables to sit around. I do have to mention that you have to have very obedient, STILL kids to bring them here, as there are tons of breakables around and things can easily get broken. The women working there were knowledgable but not excessively friendly. Considering I had 3 kids with me, it would have been nice to have a little bit of hospitality for their sake. Basically, you pay for a sitting fee and the cost of whatever ceramic shape you purchase. Glaze is included in the sitting fee and you are free to choose whatever colors you desire, and then they fire it for you, and you pick it up in the next few days. I found the prices to be a little bit expensive - picking things out with the kids was hard because a lot of the smaller pieces were around $20 each, which felt like a lot at the time, ontop of the sitting fee. I was kind of bothered that the studio didn't take credit card. I can't recall if it took debit either - things didn't exactly turn out cheap and not everyone is always carrying cash on them. The studio was cluttered and messy, which I would think is somewhat on par with an artist's studio. They ask you to wash your hands before you get started, which I can understand, but the bathroom was dirty and difficult to get to because of all the clutter in the back. I would think that for a place that requires you to use a sink, they would clean up their back area a bit. It was a fun experience in itself, but I do think that the experience could easily be recreated in any other ceramics studio, for possibly a smaller price. read more

I absolutely love this place! Crank pots has been one of my favourite places to go on a rainy or snowy afternoon since my first visit years ago! Most of the time their selection of paintable ceramic goods is pretty good! Especially around Christmas! Whether it's a coffee mug, plate or figurine! There is something for every budding artist! The staff is always there to help you and provide tips and tricks. I'm far from an artist so they have stencils to help you out! Crank pots is a great place for kids birthdays parties too! I've often seen clans of little ones painting up a storm! That being said, be sure to allow yourself enough time to finish your piece. If often takes longer than you'd think! The downside is the turn around time to get your masterpiece back! It has to be kiln baked and depending on how busy they have been, you could be waiting a few days. I had to wait almost a week once! I loved the enormous variety of items available for painting, and found several I would love to return for. I thought the prices were pretty high, but then you need to take into account that all the paint and the cost of glazing and firing is included, so that made me feel better. They also put a rush on mine so I can have it for Mother's Day- so sweet! I had a blast painting a little gnome house, and enjoyed the music and the overall creative and relaxed atmosphere. Booked a team of coworkers here for a team building activity. Everyone really enjoyed themselves, even the men! The owner and her staff are feisty. They gave me a good chuckle a couple of times. If you don't listen, you'll be called out on it. They don't just dish it out, they can take it too! I think some other reviewers may have to lighten up a bit if there were offended by these ladies. There is such a huge selection of items to choose from. Endless! And there are just as many amazing colours to choose from. The prices seem really great, even better if you get a Groupon. Came here for the first time with my mom to paint some ceramics, and had a really good time. The staff were very helpful in helping us understand the differences in the paints, and helped pick out some appropriate colors. They were friendly and chatted with us as we painted. We were inspired to do another piece later that week, and came back and received the same friendly service. When I came back to do another piece on my own, the owner remembered me and asked how it liked the last ceramics we did. Same friendly service again! As others have said, some of the brushes are pretty worn out, and finding a fine tipped brush is sometimes difficult (you have to pick through the multiple pots of brushes to find the right one). But one you're set to go, it's a great way to spend an afternoon. The price is reasonable (better than some other shops in the city, but you have to pay in cash, so bring enough) and the ceramics turn out nicely after going through the kiln. We took my 5 year old nephew to paint pottery. There were lots of pieces to choose from, still nothing with a dinosaur theme. Lucky we found some dinosaur stencils and got creative (crisis averted!). He painted an awesome little triceratops on a lunch plate ($20). We're excited to see how it turns out. I can't decide if I would recommend Crankpots for kids. I didn't feel 100% at ease with all of the breakable pottery lining the walls and although the ladies were friendly enough, I didn't get the 'we love having kids here' vibe. Had a great time with my family on Family Day here. There was lots of options to choose from and prices ranged from about $10 to as much as you want to spend. I brought a family of 5 and it cost us $185.00 which includes glazing and firing the pieces. You don't take the pieces home with you right away. It takes about a week before you can pick it up. The staff was super helpful and explained everything to us so we could just have fun with our family and not worry about bothering anyone. One of the workers there accidentally gave us the wrong colour, and being inexperienced with pottery, we thought it would change in the kiln. It didn't, so we asked about it, and basically she made fun of our inexperience, and was combative! Being with an artist has its challenges, especially when you yourself can hardly draw a straight line. I was especially nervous to check out Crankpots with my guy as it has been years since I've painted anything and I wasn't sure I could paint a straight line either. We went in on a Sunday afternoon with the idea of painting a couple pieces for Christmas presents. I chose a dog bowl for my parent's dog, and Heath chose a truck shaped piggy bank for our nephew. We were given an introduction to the shop and seated at a purple table with a bunch of paint brushes and some water and sponges. We both got to work. Time flew by quickly as we were both so deep in concentration. I was pleasantly surprised to find my lack of drawing talents does not convert completely into lack of painting talents. Mya's dog bowl slowly took shape before my eyes in a beautiful speckled red with her name printed in bold letters across and little paw prints all around the bowl. Zack's truck got some wicked lettering and flames. We weren't able to finish our pieces that day, but both left feeling so "zen". We went back the next day when there was free painting (on Monday's and Fridays) and finished our pieces and are looking forward to getting them back in about a week! Crankpots is a great place to go chill out and nurture your creative side. They book parties of all sorts-kids and adults-and you can bring your own food and drinks into the shop. There is a seating fee most days as well as a 3$ glazing fee. They have plenty of paints and pieces so you can really create whatever you like! I look forward to going back and creating more pieces while benefiting from the amazing stress relief that painting can be. read more

They only take cash!!! Know that up front or you will be wandering Whyte ave looking for a more than expensive cash machine. That said they kindly use the money saved from not paying for a debit machine to fund free paint nights. Truth be told though, it is so fun and the great pieces you want likely not easily fitting into your just withdrawn cash budget, I guarantee they would sell more to make up the difference and would make more secure transactions for the business, the customer and the bank. It sounds so simple to just bring cash, but it is a pretty dated way of doing business. At least have a "Square" that mobile farmers markets and craft sales use. read more

I went here for the first time with a bunch of girls. It wasn't as pricey as I thought it would be, especially considering the hours of fun we had. There were lots of different pieces to choose from and there seemed to be something for every price and skill level. The staff were fairly helpful, not in-your-face but also not completely absent. I was a little disappointed that a colour I saw on the wall (they have a couple places where they keep the paint and have a colour wall so you can see how the paint looks after the piece is finished) wasn't available. There seemed to be a bit of ambiguity as to how to paint, even after the brief instructions. There were a lot of paint brushes to choose from, but I found sometimes it was really difficult to find just the right brush, especially smaller tipped ones. Only taking cash or cheques seems incredibly outdated in this day and age. They have signs saying they do this to keep costs down to customers.... Unfortunately that may be something that keeps me away in the future as I usually do not carry cash. I can't wait to get my finished piece back and to see how it turned out. Ceramic painting studios are such a cool idea for a creative date (or friend date). Crankpots is a cute, kitschy little studio with plenty of sitting space and a friendly, bustling atmosphere. Set aside a few hours before going, because painting will probably take longer than you'd expect. We got there around 2pm on a Saturday and the place was fairly busy with a children's birthday party, but there was an empty table for the two of us (and plenty of window seat space, if necessary). The concept is really cool--you pick a piece of ceramic pottery, choose your paints, and sit down to design your masterpiece. Your finished product gets fired in the kiln, giving it a glossy glaze and making it safe to use for food and drink. The only thing to note is that it might take up to a week for your work to get put through the kiln, due to the high demand and ceramic line-up ahead of you. So, no--you don't get to take your piece home that day, but waiting a week to see how it turns out is pretty exciting. We spent about 2-3 hours there painting one piece each. The blank ceramic pieces themselves are absurdly pricy ($38 for a rounded mug, for example), but I assume this is because the studio consistently runs Groupons, where you can pay $29 for $37 worth of ceramics, along with the fire and paint fee (approx. $14). Without the Groupon, you could be paying upwards of $50 to paint your own fruit bowl, which can get a little pricey. With the Groupon, though, it's totally worth it. And they don't charge for the fire and paints on the weekend, so it's a good time to give this place a first try! Make sure your phone is fully charged, because you might want to browse Google and Pinterest while there for painting inspiration. And make note of the fact that they only accept cash (or Groupon)! read more

Over the years I had been there previously for ladies nights ( which I would highly recommend) and decided I wanted the same experience for my birthday. Unlike other pottery places in the city Crankpots allowed me to reserve the space after hours so I could have my own experience. When other venues wished to charge or make me have a ridiculous high minimum attendance Crankpots accommodated my situation. They allowed us to create an atmosphere that was comfortable and fun and adult orientated. Judy our host for the evening assisted those new to painting and offered one on one attention when needed. She listened to our needs and ensured that everyone created a piece they were happy with. I have always recommended Crankpots as somewhere to go when life is stressful and you need to get away. Even if you can't draw a straight line they will have you leaving feeling like Picasso! However after this weekend I would recommend Crankpots for any type of evening including 31st birthdays. Both times I have gone to Crankpots I have thoroughly enjoyed the time. Shelly is a great person to deal with and ready to help and accomodate painters of all ages and experience. I've taken my children there including my autistic son who found the experience very therapeutic. The staff were all great. On my son's last visit he really liked Rollsy, the Shar Pei, who was incredibly friendly and actually helped him relax as my son has a service dog. This is the worst customer service ever!! A group of us went in to create some art. The concept is really cool but the service is horrible While we were painting it was great. The lady stated it would be a week for pickup. However it is now almost 2 weeks I was promised a call which did not happen because they apparently don't call. I still do not have the pieces we painted. No resolution just a horrible apology. They say word of mouth helps a business it can also damage a business Do not waist your time. read more

This was a fum experience!!! My girlfriend and i along with our boyfriends went to Crankpots for their date night special. It was a buy one mug get 1 free which we thought was a great deal. We spent over 2 hours painting and chatting and were quite suprised how much the boys enjoyed it. The staff were happy to help in any way they could , and they had loads of stencils to choose from, which clearly helped us. We had to wait a week to get our mugs back and when we did we were so delighted with our achievements. We will definately be going back,as they have so many items to choose from and will spread the word of this fantastic place!! read more

I used to love this place until I had a horrible experience after they misplaced one of my pieces. I tried to be patient depite the fact they seemed to be acting like my missing peice was a huge inconvience for them. I calmly asked if there were some finished pieces I could look at and maybe I would spot it. The owner rudely responded by stating "unless you want to go through 300 boxes" I was so taken back I may have accidentally sworn when I said you wow you don't have to be so Fn Rude" She claimed she was joking all i said was it didn't seem like a joke but I stayed calm while they looked, they asked if they could have more time and I suggested I step out for a bit and come back in 30 as I live far away and didn't want to make the trip twice if I could help it. when I came back the owner stated they still hadn't found it. I told her at that point that I not upset with the missing item but I was upset with their service as they had been providing in that they still had not even said sorry we misplaced your piece. The owner then became aggressive and told me I never gave her a chance (I had been there for over 45 mins at this point in and out) at this point I became very agitated and swore before leaving. The owner stated I didn't even have the right to be upset since I had used a coupon (from a coupon book I paid for and still paid the sitting fees). I reported them to Better Busienss Beuru and have written other reviews where they have tried to claim that I was agitated and aggressive from the start and completely out of control while they were calm and polite. I would never recommended them, they are so old school and disorganized (no debit, credit card machine or computer system) I am not surprised this happened and am betting it happens often read more
