It's been a while since we got some pastele, so decided to phone order for lunch. Simple order, #5 one pastele (hot) and gandule rice, 1 small order of pastele stew, and 1 side order of bacalao salad, and 2 pastele lumpia. Hubs picked up the order and brought home lunch. Side note, the last time I ordered the stew/rice combo, it wasn't enough for the Mr, and since there was rice at home, he ordered the stew separate. I was in a meeting, and would enjoy my food after I was done. As I stepped out of my home office, I see hubs hardly at any stew, and I asked him if he was waiting for me to eat. He said no, and told me "if you want the stew, you can have it". Oh no, I know exactly what that means, so I offered him half of my pastele plate. He said no, and he looked bummed out. I knew I would need to reheat my plate, as it sat for 20 minutes before I got to eat it. While I was reheating my plate, I took a bite of his stew. I had to stop and look at the stew and it looked different. So I took another bite. The taste was ok (not like the amazing stew in the past), but the meat had a different texture. One more bite.....that's when I realized and then asked hubs, "Is that ground pork? Is that why it's different?" And he agreed, "that's what it is! ground pork!" The flavor was a bit off too, but the meat made all the difference. My reheated #5 plate was fine, a little bit salty, but just fine, no complaints. Finished up with the pastele lumpia, which was greasy (usually is unless its fresh) and asked hubs about the bill. Well, I understand inflation is a terrible thing for small businesses and consumers, but my jaw dropped when he said it was $50. And he wasn't a happy camper about the price or the stew. -Sigh- I don't give up easily on places I've enjoyed for years, so I will be back, eventually. read more

Pastele stew was sooo salty and had a burnt taste. Had this before and was extremely disappointed. No one could eat their plate and bowl. It was salt overload. Not ordering from there anymore. Wish I could get a refund for amount I paid. read more

Sad,sad,sad Face. . When I opened my takeout container was was shocked. Where's my two pasteles??? I scraped the rice and saw what looked like one pastele or was it one pastele split in two. I've been coming here for years. This didn't look right. I've always had the pasteles on top of the rice and not buried. See my picture. The taste was also lacking. Tried the pastele and the pastele empanada and both were so good. The pastele was flavorful and comforting, with that perfectly seasoned filling and soft, savory masa that tastes like it was made with care and tradition. The pastele empanada was a fun twist--crispy on the outside, packed with flavor on the inside, and not greasy at all. Same delicious pastele taste, just in a crunchy handheld form. Everything tasted fresh and homemade, and you can really tell the love that goes into the food. If you see these on the menu, don't pass them up. Definitely ordering again. read more

Went back after a few years. The Pastele Shop is known by locals for their Puerto Rican version of pasteles - made from masa with green bananas ( not sure what else ) pork, spices, and steamedin banana leaves. I've been a lacto-ovo vegetarian for 1.5+ years now, but I've made the Flexatarian move and ate their Loco Moco Pastele Plate: consisting of Gandule Rice (an option), Pastele Stew, two over easy eggs, and one Pastele. It was excellent, just a bit spicy. Eggs were over hard - I like it soft ( there is a joke but I won't go there. My fault as I waited till I got home. It was enough to feed two but I finished it all in one sitting. Parking stalls are available in a small lot for the businesses in this building...a market ananother (?) business. My coworkers and I ordered takeout for lunch. We called in our order, the worker who took our call was very friendly and helpful. When we got to The Pastele Shop, our takeout orders were ready to go. The staff were very friendly and helpful when we were splitting up the payment for the orders. The pricing of their plates is a little pricey but I think it was worth it. The ambiance is an old school mom and pop store. It was a very welcoming place. The parking lot is small and a little narrow. But at least there's some stalls compared to most eateries along School Street. The food was very tasty. I enjoyed my Spicy Pastele and my Gandule Rice. Man I wish I got a picture of the food we ordered. I love bacalao salad and there's is one of my favorites!!! The Spanish rice with meat so Ono too! I usually get the plate with stew, pasteles, Spanish rice and bacalao salad. Omg so so so yum! Don't forget the side mac salad... or maybe 2 because I'm telling you it's the best combination. Another Family own business located at the corner of Gulick and School St. Long time ago I use to live nearby The Pastele Shop so I use to come here a lot . We're talking about the mid 90's so at least 30 years ago . Good to see that there still in business and thriving. If you haven't had the Pastele Shop pastele before you need to check them out . Hands down they have the best Pastele in town . They also have Pastele lumpia along with Panadesa turnover . The Panadesa turnover is buttery and flaky on the outside filled with there Pastele filling it's one of my favorite. Also you can order their Pastele hot or mild I normally get their hot because it had a little heat in the flavors . Customer service is very friendly and fast once you order before you know it the order is ready . Parking can be a challenge they have 4 stalls right in front of their restaurant . I must have been living under a rock, because I only recently found out about this place. It's kind of a hole in the wall joint with no inside seating. It's grab and go. If you love pastele this is the place for you. I didn't get any of their plates, but did try their lumpia. I got a pastele lumpia and two banana lumpias. I enjoyed both varieties. The pastele lumpia was filled with savory pork. The banana lumpia could have used more banana. I could taste the banana, but it was minimal. Both were very greasy, but crispy and delicious. read more

I stumbled upon this place a couple months ago by accident. Got the pastels stew plate with gandule. Side pastele. Was super ono. Went back a couple more times. My most recent visit was disappointed. They gave me white rice?! WTH? Your menu says gandule. WTH you gonna give me white rice? My excitement went from a 10 to a 5. My excitement to eat the food was done. So thus the 3 stars. I purchased 8 pastele's from this place and I gotta say they make them good! The size of a pastele here is perfect because just two of them were very filling. They have mild and spicy and they both are great. Only thing I wish they would have an option " Super Spicy " cause I know that buggah would be fiaahh!!! Highly recommend this place! read more

The plates are the size of a half plate lunch but it's deep. Don't be disappointed, at first I thought oh oh I hope it's enough food for my Dad but it was plenty enough. I even had leftovers. I was surprised. It was so filling. I would recommend the rice and pastele. If you like pastele stew, get in on the side/separate. I've never had a pastele before. Based off the pictures, it wasn't really appealing to me nor did it look like what I wanted as my first meal off the plane when I arrived in Hawaii. However, I'm glad that it turned out to be both delicious and filling! The pastele is a pork stuffing inside a green plantain masa and wrapped in banana leaves. I had the #1 on their menu, which included pastele, rice, salad, and a choice of sausage or pastele stew; we opted to try the stew. Each item was flavorful and tasted fresh. As with so many other places, it's been ages since I stopped at Pastele Shop to pick up some good eats. I was very happy to see that they're still in business and good for them, less good for me, seems like business is going strong, as they were sold out of a few items that sounded like I'd have liked to try them. I picked up a couple of plates which included pastele stew, gandule rice, patele and bacalao salad. It did not disappoint. The bacalao salad was super fresh, pastele & stew tasty goodness (@Rani R.'s order) , and gandule rice was so good that I ate way more of it than I should have. We also picked up some pastele lumpia, which were toasty hot and delicious. It's been so long that I cannot be sure, but I think it's still the same nice lady who was there last time. Again, it's nice to see that they're doing well, post-pandemic. If I'm in the area, I'll try to get back to support them more. Parking is right up in front of the shop, and I've never been there when it's been full, but can see how that might get crowded sometimes. read more

Did not satisfy my pallet at all. The ganduli rice was tasteless. I didn't see any olives at all. The pastele lacked taste, also. But the texture was even worse. It was like mush! I ordered spicy, but there was no kick to this pastele. There's no substance to the food here. I wish they used quality ingredients. I believe people would pay a little more for quality food. Please don't skimp to keep prices low. There was no one here when I went. That should have told me something. Parking in front. Old storefront. Only one person working in the shop. Not so friendly either. Do not plan on returning here. As much as I want to support small local businesses, there are others that put more effort into their cuisine, and those are the places I will support. read more

First time for me trying the food here at The Pastele Shop. Located in Kalihi, near KPT. It's a small hole into the wall type establishment, which gives that old local mom and pop feel when you walk inside. As you enter, it's not very big. There's a counter and you order right there. The menu is up on the wall. This shop sold Pastele alone or with plates with Spanish rice, Pastele stew, Pastele loco moco, Ham hock bean soup, some breakfast items, Fried chicken and banana & Pastele lumpia. My suggestion, because majority of the food was fried, to eat it while it's hot and fresh! The worker in the front was pleasant as well. She answered any questions I may have had about the food as well to help me make my decisions of what I wanted to order. I did noticed that their rice is Spanish rice and not the traditional Gandule rice, yet the Spanish rice was still Ono to me. I remember my dad took me here after fishing on lana'i. This was back then where you can sit down and eat. The pasteles were so good back then and now it still is good. I go every Sunday like it's a religion thing . I always get the pastels stew and pasteles with white rice which broke da mouth a lot of times. They also added chocolate banana lumpia to the menu which is freaking good. Not to mention the staff is friendly and they get your food prepared fast. When he asked if I liked pastele, I told him I've never had it before... so because he was shocked, that's what we got for lunch! Yay, my first time to The Pastele Shop! Their menu was super organized and easy to read! We got #6 which comes with 2 pasteles and gandule rice. We also got a pastele lumpia and a banana lumpia to share. Everything we got was super yummy! After we shared the banana lumpia and pastele lumpia, I told my bf we needed 10 more of each. I enjoyed it a lot! The pastele and gandule rice was good too!!
