Having changed ownership a number of times over the years, it has weathered the resilience of changes in cooks in the consistency of its food quality. When I was working, Au's Garden was often used by the white-collar union, HGEA, to feed its members when having presentations or special events. You can also dine-in and take-out, with the restaurant doing a lot of take-out orders. They are known for their generous portions and reasonable prices. Their Chinese menu is also known as old-school, as they have certain dishes that have been around for a long time and not often offered by other Chinese restaurants: stuffed duck, bird's nest soup, sweet sour pig feet, lamb stew. Hubby and I would occasionally have lunch here when in the area. We enjoyed the Peking duck, honey walnut shrimp, sweet sour cabbage with beef, steamed fish filet with ginger onion, chicken with mushrooms & snow peas on cake noodles, jumbo shrimp with egg noodles (no longer offered due to change in ownership). However, we were also disappointed in several dishes that lacked tastiness: bat jun tofu, oyster sauce chicken on cake noodles, beef chow fun. In fact, on occasion some of the previously-mentioned dishes were not consistent and also lacked flavorfulness, but perhaps it was due to ownership changes. The lemon chicken could use some improvement, as chicken slices were thin and chewy. Just need to know which dishes are good and reliable. We have yet to try their popular xiao long bao. The restaurant has posted on its wall daily Happy Hour specials from 10a to 3p that are presently $15. Right next to it is a picture menu of various menu items that appear connected to the Happy Hour items, but they're not. Kind of misleading, but I had to ask and was told that they were regular-priced items. Staff is friendly, attentive, and efficient, and many are still employed after a number of ownership changes. The restaurant interior is clean and spacious, but outdated and shows its age from the 1960's. There are tables with 4 seats and many round tables that are filled for party gatherings during the weekends. Lanterns hang from the ceiling a décor for parties. The atmosphere is a casual, family-friendly environment. Hours of operation are daily from 10a to 9p. Located in the back of Kapalama Shopping Plaza and across Farrington High School, it replaced Jack's Chop Suey. Free parking is available in the private lot that is shared with other businesses; however, spaces may tend to fill up fast during peak dining hours. Here's a TL;DR review for logistics planners like me: Parking: Free, spacious, right in front of the restaurant Prices: A few dollars higher than average prices Service: Kind, friendly, attentive. No issues at all, they were very accommodating. Food: Presentation was really nice. It made us salivate looking at it! The taste for a lot of the tofu dishes were really bland though so we were underwhelmed. Honey walnut shrimp is something that many folks rave about for this spot but it was lacking in flavor profile. It's OK, but I wouldn't pay that much for this kind of flavor. Ambience: Great, lively. A lot of locals and regulars come here and it seems like it's a genuine timeless staple in the community. Warmly decorated. Time for an update, as my last review of Au's Garden Chinese Restaurant is almost 10 years old. Time certainly passes quickly, and 10 years ago my diet was totally different from what I eat today, but luckily whenever I go to Au's Garden Chinese Restaurant, Au has an array of items which will fit my dietary needs. Yeah, not doubt this restaurant looks dated, but that's part of the charm if you like old skool diners. I must say the Chinese food here is pretty good (check out all my pics), but what really stands out at Au's Garden Chinese Restaurant is the service. I found the workers here to be very friendly, and they provide top notch service. From the last time I dined here (earlier this year), we recently went back to Au's to celebrate Chinese New Year. Au's Garden is on the corner of Mookaula Street and Kamenani Street - which is almost like an alley, connecting to North King St. It has an old school vibe - I don't think much has changed since the 70's. I am not sure how long they've been at this location but I would not be surprised of it is 40 to 50 years. Happy Hour Special is from 1000a till 300p daily and at $15 a good deal. Operating hours are from 1000a till 900p everyday as well. I requested the special and got the Salt & Pepper Pork Chop with Chow Mein. The noodles were bland and plain. The pork chop was good. Thinly cut and dredged in corn starch. The only thing is that in most Chinese restaurants...ya can't tell the difference between the pork and beef, in most cases. Food: just average Cantonese cuisine, but there were some dishes that I quite enjoyed: clam with black bean sauce, salted egg yolk shrimp, fried intestines, and Mongolian beef. The clams with black bean sauce were well flavored and umami. The salted egg yolk shrimp is not on the menu. I guess it was a secret menu item. I recommend it without the shell so you can enjoy it with salted egg yolk sauce that coats the shrimp. The sauce is slightly grainy and creamy in texture. Fried intestines might not be for everyone, but I personally love intestines for its fatty, soft, and chewy texture. This was our second time dining here, and once again the staff was warm, friendly, and welcoming. The restaurant offers lots of seating in round and rectangular tables. It can get quite busy--especially when large groups or parties come in. Parking in front can also be limited due to the many nearby restaurants and bars, but there's additional parking available in the surrounding lots. On this visit, we ordered: 1) Hot Ginger Chicken Absolutely amazing. The chicken is topped with fresh ginger and green onions and finished with a shoyu-oil sauce that brings out incredible flavor. A must try! 2) Green Beans with Minced Pork Another favorite of ours. It has a mild kick, and the combination of minced garlic, ground pork, and tender green beans gives the dish wonderful depth and taste. The chicken was so thin it doesn't even look like there's anything in between the batter. Pretty good Chinese food i need to try more dishes to fully give a better review but the dishes i got was take out. Roast duck, comes with a sauce which is very different from other Chinese restaurants. But I like it. Some pieces were dry but the parts that wasn't dry was super good. Salt and pepper pork chops. This is my favorite to order but I felt like they didn't put enough of the toppings on it so it tasted a little more bland than I'm used to. Overall the service was great and pretty quick. Update 6-14-25. Since the town traffic was so bad my hubby said we go back at this restaurant to eat cold ginger chicken. I said ok. We arrive there about 11am and not busy sat down right away. There really wasn't any standout flavors except for their salt and pepper porkchops but the crazy prices for basic chinese food these days got me rethinking the old mom and pop chop suey joints and realizing for a little bit more cash, I might as well eat at a higher quality chinese restaurant. We ordered the lemon chicken and it was thinly sliced, flour and fried but lacked salt or flavor. It was also dry and chewy to boot. We came here for dinner with a party of 10 so we all decided to do the dinner set menu. We chose the set B. All the food was great. Every dish was perfect. This could have been a 5 star rating if for two things, that can easily be corrected. Let's get to the good stuff first. Restaurant was clean and spacious and wait staff were quite attentive and friendly. Always like that. Service was prompt and menu offerings were plentiful. I chose the Kung pao with chicken and it was listed as 'hot' with fire icon, which is not surprising, and I do like hot. When the dish came out I was surprised because it wasn't 'saucy' and appeared to be dry like a stir fry. I was suspicious, but after taking a few bites, I *really* liked it. A lot in fact. It was tasty and not overwhelming with sauce. Now the reason for the dropped star. There was no real 'hot' in the dish. No red peppers to pick out and not spicy, very mild. The other thing was that the chicken, although had a nice taste, was very difficult to cut into small pieces with your fork. Not tender enough, probably overcooked. The food was okay nothing special or amazing just normal Chinese family style food. We ordered 4 dishes and a side rice. The bill came and it was $ 104.80, I explained to the staff that this is not our bill of course it's written in Chinese with no prices next the the words. She argued with me and said no, no that's your bill that amount is correct and had an attitude and walked away. It was not correct, I grabbed the menu and wrote down the prices from the menu on the back of the bill. $17.95+$17.95+16.95+16.95+3.00- $72.80 plus tax. You charging me $ 104.80 like over charged around $32.00. So I walked up to the lady to pay. I explained that they are wrong on the addition. Very rude tone says no, no, no that's correct $104.80. I'm explaining to her -showed her my calculations, she goes to her calculator adds up the 4 items plus side rice. Then goes oh no, you are correct. Oh I charged two times. Oh yeah no apologies --- I say okay, next time listen to the customer and don't try to talk over them because you were wrong and very rude. I give her my card and as I am filing out the slip, she points to the tip portion. Says tip me high and points to the 25% and the 20% saying tip me high, higher better. Like excuse me that is really rude to tell the customer how much to tip you. You almost got away with an extra $30 dollars. How rude ! Demanding a higher tip!!! Based on this. I will not be coming here again! I will go to my favourite Chinese place instead, too bad that they were having a party there today so the parking lot was full, so that is why we ended up at Au's. I love the flavor and taste of Au's Garden Pot Roast Pork with Taro. I bought it twice for the same price, $23 for one order. On 11/22/25, it was great! Perfect 9 slices of pork layered with a piece of taro for each slice lined up in the bowl. Today, 12/6/25, my order was a sloppy mess and only 2-3 pieces of taro with (less) 6-7 slices of pork mushed together than before. Not the same as the previous order. I called the restaurant and spoke to the owner. She said the order was the same and would not listen to me, nor would she do anything to make up the lack of taro & pork in the order. She kept insisting it was the same as before and then hung up on me. I wish I had a photo of the first order as a comparison. I only have the dismal photo of today's order. Was looking for good Chinese food on the island and found this place on a Reddit thread...was shocked to see a good Chinese spot with such high reviews. (In SF, the good places usually average 3.5 stars because of lackluster service...) But everyone who works here is SO nice. We went on a Tuesday night for dinner, and it was pretty empty but it seems like they get a lot of take out orders! They have a good amount of big round tables so it's hard to imagine this place full. But I hope they get that way sometimes! The spot has its own parking lot, and I think it's just outside of Chinatown(?) We ordered the XLB, chicken feet in black bean sauce, chicken and salted fish fried rice, salt and pepper pork chops, and beef/broccoli chow mein but Hong Kong style (crispy noodles). Everything was delicious but technically I might knock off a half star because I've had more flavorful chicken feet elsewhere...but it was still tasty! The XLB was really good, tasty soup, tasty pork, etc! Our other dishes were also really tasty. Not 100% sure but I think the cuisine is Cantonese style, which is one of my favorites. Attended an event here this weekend with 9 tables and enjoyed myself. It's a great place for a party with adequate parking. My aunties enjoyed the pig feet here. My favorite was the seafood noodle dish. I also tried their speciality dim sum won ton thing, choy sum, ribs, beef dish, honey walnut shrimp and chinese chicken salad. All of the food here was decent and this place seemed busy. We had our club Christmas party here and everything appeared to go smoothly and even had some table space for our prizes and games as well as a spot to take photos. The first time I've visited Au's Garden Chinese Restaurant was to celebrate the birthday of a friend. They were easy to find and I was able to secure a large parking spot right in front of the restaurant. They do share parking with all the other businesses in the complex so it can get full during the lunch and dinner rush. The restaurant is larger than expected with lots of tables to accommodate small to large parties. To our surprise, the restaurant was mostly full on a regular weeknight. We ordered a feast and tried a lot of different dishes. Our order came out extremely fast and all the dishes all came out one after the other. This isn't typically the case which shocked all of us. It's a good surprise as we got to try everything at once versus one plate at a time. Service was better than expected as the staff kept coming around to refill water and hot tea. I decided to give Au's Garden a try, and my mom liked it a lot! We tried the crispy gau gee noodles (I asked for Hong Kong noodles), steamed fish fillet with ginger onion sauce, salt and pepper pork chops, and string bean with minced pork. All were delicious! When you type in Soup dumplings, Shanghai soup dumplings, Xiao Long Bao (XLB), xiaolongbao (小笼包), Tan Bao (Soupy Buns) into Yelp Oahu search, Au's Garden does not pop up. I have tired every Xiao Long Bao (XLB) on yelps list since Ming's Garden closed years ago and concluded Hawaii doesn't have a decent Xiao Long Bao (XLB) place until I tried it at Au's Garden. What I'm looking for in Xiao Long Bao (XLB) is: 1. Thin pei (wrapper) . When you pick up the dumpling, the pei should be so thin you can see broth floating inside. If the pei breaks when you pick it up, then it's too thin. When we made XLB at family gatherings, it was a contest among cousins to make the thinnest pei and if your pei broke or leaked soup, you were automatically disqualified. 2. Flavor of soup broth. One of the Great Aunts use to make/bring trays of a gelatinous mixture that was cut into cubes. The gelatinous cube would melt when steamed becoming the broth. 3. Au's Garden - Xiao Long Bao's pei (wrapper) is not super thin, the broth is not as rich as my Great Aunts but it is the only Xiao Long Bao on Oahu that evokes my childhood memories.
