After class, the owner and that class's teacher, Master Kim, as well as Lydia (who works there) came over to talk with us, which was pleasant.

This workshop introduces you to the postures, breathing, and healing sounds of the body's meridians that correspond to each organ. We learned how this practice can help and alleviate illnesses of the different organs. Sifu/Dr. Torres explained how in Chinese Medicine each organ and sound correlates to the different seasons and and elements of nature. We also discussed the different positive and negative emotions associated with the organs, as well as, the different senses and tastes. He even discussed the different foods that can be eaten to nourish each organ. I always enjoy this workshop. This is my 3rd or 4th time attending, but every time I attend, I always learn something new and I enjoy being able to practice with other participants. If you are looking for a new type of meditation to add to your repertoire, then this is for you. I am hoping that Dr. Torres/Sifu Torres will continue offering this very beneficial workshop.

I have become a lot stronger and more agile than I've been in a very looong time; It feels amazing. I have now earned my green/gold sash and am continuing to learn and grow. The classes are still tough and demanding of your body, but I can actually get through them a lot better than when I started. I also attend regular acupuncture sessions which compliment my training. They keep me healthy and strong. I still highly recommend this school to come learn very traditional Northern 7 Star Praying Mantis. I guarantee if you put in the effort you will understand. do it!

The level of instruction is top notch, the facilities are extremely clean and well looked after, and the environment is really friendly but without sacrificing an ounce of legitimacy for the martial aspects of the martial arts. All of the instructors both know their s***, and present the principles of each art in a way that anyone at any level can benefit from. I've seen absolute beginners come in and get coached to join in the fun really quickly, and have trained with other folks here with years of experience - people at all levels learn something new every time. There is no testosterone-fueled ego trips going on here - people are treated respectfully across the board, and have fun with training. Even while sparring hard, testing each others' skills, egos are left at the door. Sadly, I can no longer train here, as I moved away from Chicago. But fortunately not too far, and will definitely be back for the awesome workshops they often offer on weekends. If you're anywhere in the Chicago area, and want to train serious but fun martial arts, get in great shape, and meet some great people, then Tandang Garimot is the spot.

She is a talented capoeirista and an all-around amazing person. As a teacher, she knows when to push and when to be patient. For folks who are not as familiar with the capoeira universe, ABADA-Capoeira (the group she is affiliated with) is based in Rio de Janeiro and, over the past 25 years, has expanded to a number of countries across North America, Europe, and Asia. What makes this group unique is its philosophy of being all-inclusive and its strong emphasis on technique. Sucuri is a student of Mestra Marcia, an extremely accomplished capoeirista from Rio, who is in turn a student of Mestre Camisa, the president and founder of ABADA-Capoeira. In other words, she is the real deal. Her classes expose students to all aspects of this rich art form - martial arts, acrobatic movements, music and rhythm, and Afro-Brazilian culture. Try it out - you will not regret it!

I had taken…read morekarate, aikido and jiu-jitsu about 10 yrs ago and wanted to get back into a martial art again. The only thing I knew about JKA was that it was Traditional Shotokan Karate (and I didn't even know what that meant.). I just knew I wanted to study a traditional form of karate and I was hoping to find a dojo oin the north side. I have so many positives to talk about that I don't think this page has enough room. First, the Sensei, Sensai Michael Arab, is fantastic!! (Senpai Lopez is as well!). The class is a mixed level and his skills at teaching reaches everyone in the room. He takes his time to challenge, encourage, push, watch from afar as you work and teach and explain traditional Shotokan movement and movement concepts. I smile in each class watching this true master of the art form teach multiple level classes, approach each student for personal growth and encouragement. I feel truly blessed that I have found his dojo, this traditional form of shotokan karate, this teacher and the fellow students because I am learning so much from a serious teacher. Secondly, the other students in the class have also been warm, welcoming, friendly, and encouraging. They have each taken a moment to introduce themselves and help me when I'm confused or not completely aware of what I was doing. Thirdly, the JKA is inside the Japanese Cultural Center on the second floor and the dojo is steeped in tradition without being intimidating if you have never been in a traditional dojo setting or if you are a beginner. The dojo is clean and comfortable in this setting. It is located 1/2 block west of the Belmont el and super easy to get to. My only complaint - I want to now take class every day and they don't offer classes every day.
