    Crumbs - Roadside charm

While driving out to Stirling with my dad the other day, we stumbled onto this charming little…read moreroadside eatery in Bonnybridge. We were only looking for a coffee, but I was surprised to see some nice looking food on offer. Crumbs is located in a quiet little retail strip and it didn't look like too many people were passing through, but as we sat down and observed the flow of their business, I realised I couldn't be more wrong; they seem to do a very healthy trade with the local builders and road workers for filled rolls and such...the stream of people coming in for their takeaway breakfasts and lunches never stopped! They clearly have a reputation in the area for food that's good and fast, but they also had a pretty impressive selection of actual home-cooked food for the sit-down lunch crowd (only two tables in Crumbs, but great for people-watching!!). I saw some gorgeous homestyle mac and cheese, some sort of toad-in-the-hole type of dish, and various fillings for jacket potatoes, all of which looked quite appetising. One of the things I love most when travelling is finding funky out of the way places like Crumbs where they're serving up "real food that's real good" and the ladies running the place are a bit cheeky with everyone - especially the regulars. It reminds me of all the road trips I've taken through the western half of the US, where places with extra helpings of character aren't hard to find. I don't know when I'll be passing though Bonnybridge next, but I'll definitely make a point to come hungry so I can stop at Crumbs for more than just coffee.

For such a big chain of burger restaurants I felt down by our visit to this store…read more Our visit was just before the mid week lunch time rush, but there only appeared to be four staff on, two on the front (taking orders and pulling together those orders), one cooking and the last dealing with the drive thro'. The place was quite noisy with a few families in with young children but I guess that was to be expected for a week day lunchtime (Note to self: must remember to a avoid it at those times ;-) ) Since there were so few staff on the service was slow and once we were shouted over to pick up our order we noticed one of the drinks was wrong, a quick walk back quickly fixed that though. We weren't the only ones to be shouted over to pick up our order and it didn't help the noisy atmosphere, I'm sure that the families also appreciated having to leave their children alone at the table to pick up their food from the counter ;-) The only hint at an apology I can remember receiving was from the server explaining that they had got new tills and couldn't find the vegetarian option as it was no longer called a Been Burger.. I'm sure that if they had only taken two seconds to apologise that they were short staffed and there would be a short delay and actually brought the food to the table rather than waiting for us to pick it up, the experience would have been a bit more pleasant. Putting myself in the staff's shoes I suspect that they were just having a bad day and with so few staff on I guess that it was a tough shift for them. I am just glad we arrived before the lunch rush, most of which appeared to leave as there was no one was at the tills to take the orders after a few minutes of waiting.
