Although in a similar price bracket to some of it's competitors like Diva and Accessorize etc. I think the quality of Colette's products is a little better and their appearance a bit more classy. Colette Accessories often has great sales on their brand new items as well as their last season stock. Sales like buy 2 get the 3rd free, or 3 for $20 are just some of the ways the products are marketed. I find Colette's a great option not only for jewellery for myself but also great as gifts for my friends.

I took it to the guys at Ringwood Jewellers, and for a good price they did a fantastic job cleaning up the ring, bringing it back to its original sparkle and glory. They also did an evaluation on the ring, and were happy to have a chat with me about it, as they didn't get vintage stuff like that it everyday. Since then these guys have resized rings for us, and on one occasion fixed my watch. I found the watch fixing price a little steep, as it was only in need of a small part, however they went ahead and gave my watch a good clean up as part f the service too, something I wouldn't get it I had gone for a cheaper option.

The glass is so shiny you can even use it as a mirror - be prepared for an annoyed glance for staff members if you so much as breathe on the glass however. The staff (and the pristine cleanliness and obvious wealth) are what deters me from this shop. I have never actually set more than three footsteps down inside due to pure intimidation. The day I did take those few steps I was met with a staff member dolled up to the nines behind the counter. She slowly raised her head, looked me up and down just as slowly and then looked away. The only other person in the shop was a customer who was similarly dressed to the staff member and was being shown a variety of wedding bands by a male staff member. Immediately my jeans and a t-shirt felt out of place and I backtracked hastily out. It shouldn't matter whether or not you can afford the items in a shop, you should never be made to feel so uncomfortable by staff that you actually leave before looking at anything. I have never wanted to go back since. The prices are exorbitant and it is clear they are trying to attract wealthy or upper society customers. There is nothing bad about the shop itself, I just wouldn't recommend it to the average shopper.

I also like the buying something that has been locally made and not mass-produced in some factory. Some of Metal Couture's jewelery is over the top, rings like cathedrals, necklaces in the shape of bird skulls, or earrings like chandeliers, but all of it is very finely crafted and incredibly detailed. This is not cheap costume jewelery, like much of the stuff in this style. It is handmade in the studio behind the shop. I was shown studio, it is like an alchemists laboratory with animal skulls and other items. Unfortunately the jeweler, William Llewellyn Griffiths was out on that day, so I wasn't able to see the master at work. The style of their jewelery is reflected in the shop fittings, lots of red velvet drapes and the large gilt frame where the jewelery is displayed. Metal Couture has the aesthetics of the decadence. The silver heart is hallmarked and silver chain is a good weight and thickness. And most importantly C. loves it. It really fits with her style and looks so good on her.

I've bought some pieces from this little store and am always impressed by the wide range of stones and metals. They always have excellent pearls, amber, garnets and silver. The cabinet devoted to rings and different sort of bracelets and bangles is always exciting; it includes enormous silver cuffs and more masculine and edgy designs. The pearl collection is also really fantastic. The last time I was there Portobello's had some drop pearls set into silver flowers, they were around $40, and there are colour combinations from the creamy white to deep purple. The service is friendly and genuine, although considering the size of the store the service can be stretched when it gets busy. Portobello's also do some lovely gift-wrapping.

I love how going through the generous display cabinets, while examining the inspiration behind some of the most talented jewellery designers. Check out the intricate pieces by Kathryn Wardill, Nicola Bannerman, Jennifer Braithwaite, Linda Hues and Jin Ah Jo. You won't find traditional jewellery here though so if that's what you're looking for - keep looking.
