I had a mixed experience with The Perfect Workout. I'll start with the highlight of my time there--working with Josh. He is an excellent trainer: knowledgeable, patient, and highly attuned to where I was in each movement. He consistently adjusted appropriately and created a sense of safety in the sessions. I only wish I had started my six-month training with him. When I first joined The Perfect Workout, I made it clear to my then-trainer that I wanted to avoid injury and progress slowly since it had been 5 years since I had done strength-based workouts. Unfortunately, during my first session with her, I strained my upper trapezius muscle after being pushed beyond my comfort level in weight. In later sessions, this trainer continued to encourage me to push myself with upper body machines despite my concerns and reminders to her that I was in pain and believed I needed to rest my muscle. After several tries assuming the trainer was more knowledgable than she actually was, I requested to limit our workouts to lower body only so my injury could heal. This trainer left after several weeks because she injured herself working out. Because of this, I strongly recommend requesting Josh and sticking with him. The consistency and level of attention and attitude of listening made a big difference. I was also disappointed there was no real acknowledgment or support from management after the injury, especially given the cost (~$600/month). After six months, I do feel stronger in my lower body. However, for the price and short sessions (20 minutes, twice a week), I didn't experience the results suggested in their marketing and I decided to work 1:1 with a professional trainer who is an expert in functional movement as well as strengthening. In summary, if your primary goal is strength training and you can work with Josh, this may be a good fit. If you're looking for a more comprehensive, functional approach with a strong emphasis on injury prevention, it may not be the best long-term option. read more

I have been working out here for several months now with both Gio & Gary and it has been one of the best exercise commitments I have made. The place is a specialty gym where you work out for 20 min, 1-2x/week with a personal trainer doing high weight, slow repetition exercises on machines for all parts of the body - arms, legs, abs, etc. Most of the clients are actually middle-aged to elderly. In my late 20s, I have still found that this workout has increased my overall strength. I began at 145 lbs on the leg press and can now do 205 lbs! Both Gio & Gary have been enthusiastic, encouraging and knowledgeable about how to increase success of the program. They are always ensuring my safety, proper form and push me to the maximum, even when I feel like giving up. The Perfect Workout would not be the same without all of its amazing staff. I started working out at The Perfect Workout about a year ago. I knew the style of weight lifting using maximum effort for a short time was the way to go. I was motivated to get into a routine where I could "grow stronger as I grow older." I wanted to see results that would make a difference in my daily activities. I work with personal trainers Josh and Kerry. They both motivate me to do my best at each workout. The facility is quite, encouraging and very positive. The workouts are closely monitored so I have no worry about hurting myself. Each machine is adjusted to what I need. They make sure you're doing the motions properly, and getting the most out of your workout. The Perfect Workout gets you results, and fast. In less than 6 weeks I was able to Double the weight on the leg press and have lost a total of 6" with no additional changes to my routine. I'm active, and enjoy the gym but there is something intimidating about trying to build your own workouts and execute them in such a public way. I love The Perfect Workout! Years ago I studied the Slow Motion/High Intensity concept and applied it to my own gym workouts with success. Then I got infatuated with swimming laps and taking Yoga and QiGong classes. Recently I felt I needed to get back to weights as I was losing muscle strength as I aged, and osteoarthritis was progressing alarmingly. I wanted a trainer's guidance to avoid harming my aging body. I am surprised this method isn't more widely practiced as it is a brilliant concept, brief yet effective. After just a few months with one guided session a week, I am feeling notably stronger and more toned. If you are looking for maximum results in minimum time this might be just the perfect exercise for you. Twenty minutes twice a week is the MOST time recommended (how counter-intuitive is that!), and while those are very intense minutes, they rarely leave you feeling achy, but rather energized. I have many friends who relish their devotion to running, biking, weight lifting, etc., but long sessions of repetitive motion can really take a toll on one's body. Amelia is my wonderful trainer, but I have worked with several others at the Mission Valley gym and they have all been friendly and encouraging. This is also a great form of exercise for rehabilitation from joint surgery. My hope is by strengthening my muscles I will be able to avoid joint replacement altogether. They offer free introductory sessions and information packets, so you have nothing to lose by checking it out. Whatever your age it could change your life. P.S. It sounded too good to be true, but it is! It is "the perfect workout". a Work out is only successful if you make time for it and you don't quit. It would be hard to imagine that you can't make time for 20 minutes twice a week! Not only are they conducive to a busy lifestyle, the workouts actually do what they say they will do. . . Build muscle and strength. don't get me wrong, the workouts are extremely difficult, but knowing that it will only last for 20 minutes makes it doable. The trainers are so personable and motivating! they make you feel good about yourself no matter what level you are on. Highly recommended. The trainer was very attentive to my goals, past experience, and limitations. I especially appreciate the new techniques to maximize limited time to workout. I have worked with a few trainers over the years. This offers the best technique for me. I wish I was trained in this 10-15 years ago. I find it harder and harder to make it to the gym and keep a regular schedule. I see how Perfect Workout has me reconsidering their format, providing a more efficient, fast-paced (done in 20-30 minutes) without having to warm up, cool down, shower, change clothes, etc. My mid-20-year-old son also worked with a trainer here and was very pleased with the fact he can go in jeans - get in, get it done, get out. I have been working out at the Mission Valley location since March 2015 and am ready to sign up for another year. Gary has been with me the entire time and continues to be supportive and inspiring. But that describes everyone of the trainers. No matter who trains me on a particular day, they always start by asking how the body is feeling today. Depending on the response, they know how to make tweaks that are most effective for you. While I have standard workouts scheduled on Monday with Josh and Thursday with Gary, I like being able to make changes in the day or time of my workout depending on my schedule. No matter who you work with, they know exactly what you did at your last workout and what is scheduled for the current one. There is no loss of effectiveness. You don't have to coach them through what you usually do. They know it because of the meticulous records that are maintained and available to them. I have never really enjoyed exercise and I wouldn't use the word fun to describe this workout, but it is definitely effective. I will be 69 this month and am in the best shape of my life. I have battled weight gains since youth, but now find that it isn't a problem. And though we are warned of losing muscle as we get older, body scans in January and May 2018 showed a muscle mass increase of .7% in that 5 month period. So I know it works. Most days I do get in and out in 20 minutes. Nothing else is that efficient! read more

I'm a long-time client - almost 8 years! I've worked with Anna nearly the entire time, although I occasionally have one of the other trainers fill in (most recently Amelia and Jamie). It's the best workout with the shortest time commitment. My two session per week are programmed into my calendar and I will keep doing it for as long as I can. I've never had a weight problem, but worried about bone density issues. The Perfect Workout has made me stronger, more toned and even slimmer. It's worth the cost. Another reviewer here said that the amazing trainers are like family. It's true - they're all friendly and care about you and your well being. I joined The Perfect Workout almost 2 years ago. I was overweight, weak, tired and 68! I loved the fact that the workout was just 20 minutes which fit into my busy schedule. The first few months were tough as I slowly rebuilt muscle and rebooted my metabolism. My trainer was patient but pushed me to put in my best effort and had confidence in my ability to change my thinking and achieve a level I wouldn't have though possible. I now leg press about 325 pounds! I'm happy to report that almost 2 years later I've lost over 15 pounds, toned my muscles and feel strong and empowered!
