The pub, named after a bakery which used to occupy the site, serves a good rotating range of real ales, which seems to attract a wide range of punters, from students to 40-somethings. Sadly, School Lane isn't what it used to be, what with all the charm demolished by Liverpool One and all the tramps forced to pee and beg elsewhere. I was told that various buildings in School Lane were listed, and The Old Post Office was one of them, meaning it couldn't be demolished along with Quiggins. Which was great for little old steak-lover me. It was never a particularly busy pub, what with being at the back of everything, but now with the new shops around it I hope business is booming. Now, back to the steak. Served on a sizzling red hot metal platter, you need to leave it a while before you add any sauces, otherwise it will just dry up or disintegrate. I found this the hard way when I put a generous portion of mustard next to the steak, looked up to resume the conversation I was having, and when I next looked back, the mustard had reduced to a dry brown scab on my plate. However, the meat itself is cooked to perfection and as I've already mentioned, the price is right! Apart from the steak, everything else is standard pub issue, with the faded old pictures of days gone by and typical wooden fittings and fixtures. I am so full and ready to to take another stroll past the River Dee before turning in for the night. If you have to chose a place that gives you that perfect slice of quality English cuisine this is the spot to start putting you in the right mood! There are loads of other restaurants and shops but this is a clear winner and easy to miss if you don't look carefully! Don't forget to stop in, hidden gem by the river.

Mum frequently can't finish her meals, but bruv and I rarely struggle from that affliction, so you know the portions were generous, as well as being tasty.
