History
Established in 1861.
The Plough began in 1861 when Alfred Smith relocated his weatherboard shop to the site it still occupies. After a fire destroyed the hotel and stables in 1901, then-owner John Foley rebuilt it in enduring bluestone from Ballan. Another blaze in 1977 saw licensee Clarrie Jose restore it once more. In 2010, Mark Mills revived the long-neglected hotel, breathing hospitality back into its heart. Today, with his wife Ruth, they continue the legacy—most recently adding a stunning new function venue, perfect for celebrations where lasting memories are made.
