The Point At Rockridge was the third place we looked at for my husband, Alan. We were already on the waiting list for Belmont Village in Albany but Alan wanted to keep looking and I went along. It didn't start out well. Parking is very difficult in that neighborhood and when I called the front desk for information the receptionist working that Friday was clueless and unhelpful. Rather than suggesting I park in the circle in front or in their garage, which has a space designated for people touring the facility, she suggested I park across Pleasant Valley Road in the Safeway shopping center, a nonstarter w/ our mobility issues. I saw a yellow zone, parked in it, hung up our blue tag and hoped for the best. By the time we had signed in and gone through the COVID protocols I was fuming. Sharon, who showed us around, listened to me respectfully and then changed the whole tone of the visit. As we walked through the facility she introduced us to the people we encountered on the way, staff and residents, joking and playing w/ the residents and teasing Alan about being a troublemaker. By the time we had finished the tour we were sold. The place seemed warm and homey and Alan felt at home, particularly liking the resident involvement. We put down a deposit and waited for a one bedroom apartment to come available. We knew one was coming in 6-8 weeks because its occupant was moving to the Memory Care unit on the second floor. It was actually a bit sooner, more like 4-6 weeks. Jeff was the nurse who came to our house to do the assessment of Alan's abilities and needs. I was impressed w/ his thoroughness and his charm. We took possession of the apartment June 28 and Alan moved in July 1. Everything went smoothly. The IKEA delivery was June 28. Mel, from maintenance, was our guardian angel that morning, helping us in multiple ways, small and large, even to the point of bringing up the IKEA furniture so the delivery people didn't have to deal w/ the COVID protocols. She was wonderful and made clear she wouldn't be available in the afternoon. I appreciated her communication, which was clear and warm. Andre was also extremely helpful, particularly in telling us which electric plugs were operated by the wall switches. Every staff member we encountered has been welcoming and warm. Alan reports they call residents by name from day 1. Deborah is the facility administrator and it's clear the tone starts w/ her, warm yet professional. Tammy, Kevin and I helped settle Alan in, putting things away, assembling lamps, hooking up electronics, etc. His new desk won't be delivered until the 16th, so desk-related things are makeshift, but things are mostly organized. They assigned an "ambassador", another resident to introduce Alan to the facility and people and that's a very nice thing. Alan has liked the food a lot and has participated in some of the activities. We got him an alarm device to wear so he can call for help if he falls or has another need for assistance. It's been just a few days, but we agree we made the right choice for him. We talk on the phone at night and in the morning and I have visited every day except today because there's a July 4th BBQ which nonresidents can't attend because of COVID protocols. It's been hard being apart, but I'm not worried about him in the way I was at home. read more

I have been visiting a friend at this assisted living facility for 3 years and this issue has gone from bad to worse. I am honestly shocked by the conditions given how much residents are charged to live here. The most unacceptable issue is the persistent smell of urine and other strong odors throughout the third floor. It is not occasional -- it is constant, and at this point it has become noxious. As I understand residents have complained repeatedly and have requested that something be done, yet nothing ever changes. For a facility that charges exorbitant marrates, basic cleanliness and odor control should be an absolute standard. It is difficult to understand how management expects families or residents to feel comfortable, respected, or confident in the care environment when such a fundamental problem is ignored. If management is unwilling or unable to address something as basic as sanitation and air quality, it raises serious concerns about what other issues may also be overlooked. This is not the level of dignity or care that seniors deserve, especially at these prices. read more

I highly recommend this assisted living facility. My 97 year old grandmother has lived there for three years. The caregivers, dining staff, maintenance crew, cleaning staff, front door greeter, med techs, and management, have all been great. Like truly the heart of this facility are the people who work there. Everyone is so friendly and truly caring about my grandmother like she is their own. The waitresses know her likes and what she usually orders, they have a set menu daily or you can order from the anytime menu. Served on white dining cloth tables with flowers. They have monthly live music bands and entertainment that frequent the facility. There is always something going on. The grounds have a lovely backyard patio with plenty of tables and comfortable chairs to enjoy the outdoors and the pretty landscaping. I feel like my grandmother is in great hands and I visit weekly so I know first hand how it is. Highly recommend. read more

New management is even worse than before. Totally incompetent. Keep an eye on your monthly fees as they love to add fees and will not explain what they are for. The Point continues to be a headache for family members already tasked with caring for aging parents. They can't even handle basic bookkeeping. First they charged an extra month, which I had to have reversed, then the new ED called and insisted we owed the previous month's rent, which we had already paid. Currently, they are withholding refunding 2 days' rent because the hospital bed was not picked up for 2 days (the service only picks up once a week), although they have plenty of empty rooms. They are sticking to the details of the contract for that but when it comes to the services they promised, that's a different story. read more

The positive thing about the Point is the caring staff that actually works with the residents. The people on the ground, actually working with residents are the heartbeat of the place. However, they are bound by administration and its whims, and administration seems to change regularly.There have been at least 3 different administrations in the 5 years that my mother has lived there, with several months of "interium-admin" in between each change. The current administration never sent out a notice that a new, permanent administration was in place. Similarly, when the Director of "Generations" (the Memory Care unit) "left" we were not informed. I heard it through the grapevine a week later, and went to the Point's director to find out that it was true. There was no one person actively overseeing what was going on in Generations (Memory Care) for several weeks. That lack of communication and lack transparency is very disconcerting. The monthly letters that let residents and their family know what is going on have stopped, although, we do receive communication when they want more money. Every year, the price of our mother's care has increased by hundreds of dollars. New residents beware! The price you are being quoted today is probably not the same price you will be asked to pay in the future. (we are now paying well over $2,000 more a MONTH than the original price) Our mother also has personal caregivers - not from the Point, who we pay for ourselves, but the Point has restricted these caregivers' activity so that they can charge us for things that the personal caregiver is hired to do. Again, the staff is caring and friendly. However, this experience with The Point has made us realize that the quality of a place can change rapidly. They have made her transition to assisted living smooth and welcoming. My mom's studio is lovely, the balcony provides a space for her plants and she is already building community with other residents. The Point at Rockridge is under new management and immediately increased rents, without increasing service. Additionally, as of January 1, they are adding a "care fee", to all residents of $600. Many residents here are independent and not receiving any care at all. Management. says everyone must pay the new fee! I have been here for 7 1/2 months.I came for Respite Care and decided to stay on and get an apartment here. I like the people and the activities here and the care is generally very good. It has improved over the past 4 months due to the new management. There were and are some "bumps in the road" getting there, but it is beginning to smooth out. I am Gluten Free (not a celiac) so my needs in my diet are somewhat different than the rest of the population. When Chef Will was hired my needs were more accommodated over a three month period. He made sure the wait staff knew how to accommodate me by asking the right questions or stating that the entree was Gluten Free, or not. Soon we got creative, especially when there were sandwiches or stuffed wraps. I would ask for a plate of lettuce and vegetables and ask them to put the filling on the top. They would give me a dressing, if appropriate, and I would have a meal I could eat. At other times, I would order from the Everyday Menu. Itm is and was more limited for GF selections, but it is and was an option. At first it would take an hour to an hour and a half to prepare, and while my tablemates ate their entrees, I would wait. Chef Will changed that and I now can get special orders much more quickly. The quality of the food is better. We have a lot of pork, shrimp, and beef, but some of that is changing. We have a monthly meeting called Food for Thought with Chef Will and Aubrey, our Dinning Room Manager. The residents are able to tell them what they like, what they would like changed, and suggestions for improvements. For instance, I asked for more fiber in our diet and suggested beans, lentils, baked beans, pinto beans, brown rice, etc. Within the month, Chef Will had his cooks both improve the soups and side dishes, add herbs to improve the flavor. The soups were thicker and tastier, and the side dishes include brown rice and more fiber. I suggested that he thicken soups and gravy with something other than wheat flour, using potato starch or corn starch instead, and he does that some of the time, so I am able to eat the entrees. These are some examples of the positive changes made at The Point at Rockridge in the last few months. read more

This issue has been resolved. My normal rating for this location would be 4 stars which I am updating to now. Normally, I would rate this location higher then 1 stars but the recent actions by management has caused me to question their ethics. The Point at Rockridge are attempting to force their independent residence to pay $600/month for medication assistance and caregiver support-- even if they do not use or require the service. The care staff at The Point are kind and compassionate and have given my family member great care since she moved in over two years ago. I'm always impressed by their upbeat and helpful attitudes, especially given that they're supporting many residents who have a range of physical and cognitive impairments. Their occasional delays in responding -- especially during busy times - are probably caused by understaffing, but generally they can be relied on to provide her consistent, on-time support. Leading the team are a dynamic duo -- David Ayala, Resident Care Director, and Nazmeen Begum, Resident Care Coordinator, who are responsive, professional and go the extra mile to be sure my relative's needs are met. They have also given me a lot of support and kept me informed so that I can be assured that she's in good hands. In general, the Point seems to draw good people who are committed to making it a vibrant, positive place to live: Denice at the front desk, Imani in activities, the Med Techs and the dining and maintenance staff are just some examples. For that reason, I was surprised and sorry to read the very negative review by one of the housekeepers and hope that management quickly addresses the issues she raised. Unfortunately, the constant turnover in management staff over the last two years - including twice in the executive director and business manager positions - prevents the operations from running smoothly and consistently. And as the organization navigates these changes, residents and family members are generally not kept informed. An example is that my family member's billing was mishandled during her first year and then an excellent, new business manager got billing working efficiently, but she has now left. Billing is now delayed and there have been no communications that I know of about the plans to close this critical gap in staffing. Corporate staff were on hand and initially very responsive during these recent turnovers; hopefully they will give the new executive director the support she needs to stabilize operations and will take steps to keep residents and family members better informed. Because of this chronic management turnover, I was tempted to give the Point 3 stars, but am giving it 4 because of the great direct service staff! read more

The Point is a very good place for the price. The staff is so nice and good to the residents. When you tour places look for how many residents you see outside their rooms (activity) and how the staff responds to them (knows their names and treats them). You will see that The Point residents are engaged and the staff are very good. Before The Point, we had our mom in another assisted living facility in Oakland that was very well decorated and clean but charged much more and had service and care issues that were not apparent just by touring it. All facilities have issues, but we recommend the people, leadership, and care at The Point. read more

The Point at Rockridge is a very good and safe place for the residents. They provide healthy food for all meals, administer all medications, clean the rooms, provide care based on the need of the resident, and have several activities daily. When concerns arise, they are responsive in a timely and effective manner, which is comforting for me, since I live on the East Coast. I know that they make a concerted effort to take care of my mother. There were some issues with cleaning of the apartment, which they quickly responded to and rectified. I have been especially thankful for the Care Department and Administrative staff. Also, since my mother only moved into The Point about 3 months ago, they have made an extra effort to help her with the transition. She is still adjusting but adapting to her new home. read more

I moved my mom into the point in the first part of 2023. Sharon was the sales director and couldn't have been more helpful. I have never had to go through this process before and her compassion was what shined not the need for another sale. Once she was in and adjusted the care staff couldn't have been more helpful. My mom has dementia and needs a lot of help and care. Care staffer CC is phenomenal! I can't say enough about how great she is with my mom. Care coordinator Nazmeen has been so supportive and always has what's best for my mom in mind. She really knows how important family is and has that at the forefront of everything she does. What a true professional! Moving on to the business side of things Stephanie Cox director of the business side of things is on it 24/7. As busy as she is she always takes the time to make sure I have the paperwork and documentation that I need to make sure my mom's care plan is safe and secure. There are so many people there that are working hard to ensure my mom's care, safety, and longevity. I have no regrets at all! After a very unsatisfying stay at another, supposedly top-rated (and more expensive!), facility in the area, I moved my mother to The Point at Rockridge in June of 2019. It was the best decision we could have made. I only wish we could have been there from the start. Even when the coronavirus pandemic hit, I knew my mom was in great hands. The Executive Director Deborah Savoie was all over the situation. I remember trying to reach her at the office and being told that she was out scouring the Bay Area for PPE, in order to ensure that the staff could continue to safely care for the residents there. I would like to comment on The Point at Rockridge, for assisted living and memory care.. I have a friend who has now been there for five years. I visit almost every day. You walk in and are greeted with a warm hello, and a smile. I know these are little things but very important. When I get back home, I know my friend is getting the best care available. And that the center and its staff cares 100% about the residents. Kati, the Director, is always available to answer any question or to help with any situation. The building is clean, and has lots of activities for the residents. The second floor Patio is beautiful, take a book, sit out in the sun, or under a tree and just relax, with a loved one. This place is terrible!!!!! The woman who interviews families lied about the services they could provide for my mother, whom suffered from dementia, and also recovering from a stroke. She guaranteed that mom would receive top tier care for the exorbitant amount of money we were spending. My mother didn't get anything promised. What she did do was regress. Once this dump opened up after the COVID-19 lock down, I had the chance to do a room visit. When I went in her private bathroom, there was prescription medication for someone else. I was livid. NOTE TO YELP: This may look suspiciously like a planted review. lt isn't. l just happen to have more than half a centuty of editing and writing behind me, and my enthusiastic account of The Point at Rockridge reflects my actual experience as a resident. lt would be a pity if seniors and families looking into assisted living were deprived of the information l share here. Who's writing this review? l'm a 76-year-old man , a retired editor, who uses a wheelchair as his substitute SUV. Covid, sadly, put communal life at The Point into lockdown for a year, suspending most of the activities that make this place such a delightful home in normal times. Now that life is beginning to reawaken, we have a lot to look forward to, especially the many activities designed to keep us fit, active, entertained, and involved with each other. My regular favorites have included "brain games," drumming/singing sessions, and a writing group that l hope will return. There's much else: outings to shows, gentle exercise groups, movies in our mini-theater . . . For relaxation outdoors and a top-up of vitamin D on sunny days, we have a charming patio. I'm told that Happy Hour is . . . happy, but l spend that time of day sipping Crystal Geyser in private! l was very taken with the look of the facility on my first visit. As l walked in, a side glimpse of residents taking their lunch in the dining room gave me the unexpected feeling that l was in a four-star hotel. Touring the rest of the building confirmed that impression: all the design elements were in excellent taste, there were amenities of all kinds, from a gym to a library, and upkeep was immaculate. l was shown a few apartments. One-bedrooms would have overstretched my budget, but studios were within my reach, and when l eventually moved in a few months later, it was into a spacious one on the top (sixth) floor, with an expansive view of the sky and, in the distance, the Marin Headlands. l consider myself lucky to have this apartment, but it can't be that superior to others in the building because l haven't met anyone who was downbeat about theirs. Catering became a bit of a challenge when Covid made supplies less dependable, but our cuisine has now returned to its former, enviable standard, i.e., meals are delicious, varied, and served with grace. ls there anything about our food that l'd like to tweak? Yes. l would give greater honor to the vegetable kingdom. Not that l'm a vegetarian, and not that any vegetarian would go hungry here, but l think veggies have more to give us than our menus acknowledge. l'm grateful each day for the conscientious, loving teams that support our lives: caregivers, medical technicians, meal servers, chef's crew, program leaders, maintenance staff, administrators . . . l'm more than satisfied at the Point. l enjoy the abundance of services the community has to offer. l like and love the people of all kinds with whom l share a home. l appreciate the freedom to set my own degree of privacy. And l feel secure in the care of a warm, responsive staff under the guidance of enlightened management. So, would l recommend The Point? You get three guesses! read more

Please please do not put your loved one here. My mother in law was here for about a month before we took her out and moved her to another home. We never once felt that the communication was good between the staff and families; we would get different responses from different staff members and were always in the dark The first red flag was our move in date - there was feces in the toilet!!! First of all, this is the time of COVID so sanitation should have even higher standards. But even in the worst apartment rental for a regular person- feces should not be in the toilet!!! The staff was nonchalant about this when we complained- "oh sometimes we have residents get confused about their rooms" they said. I don't care. This obviously shows the toilet wasn't cleaned before my mother in law moved in! Lightbulbs were also out in the room- hello, where are basic standards here? Especially considering the hefty price we were paying. We had been told the staff would help us with the movE in. My husband had packaging from the new furniture, and he asked for it be cleaned up (what are we supposed to do, walk it into the street, pack it into our car and drive it home?). A staff member handed him a broom and told him to clean it up himself The sales team and the management team need to be aligned in their covid protocol, because the sales team told us completely different rules when we signed the contract. Once my mother in law was moved in, we were told by the director all these rules that were totally the opposite of what the sales director had said. Talk about a bait and switch Some of the staff members have zero experience in health care or working with the elderly -I understand these aren't the highest paying jobs but wow, I do not want my loved one , who's already confused with Alzheimer's, to be taken care of by someone who's unfamiliar with the disease. In addition- a man kept coming into my mother in laws room late at night. It was another resident. She was horrified and screamed and he put his hand over her mouth . This happened THREE times and Everytime, we called the staff and they had some excuse. Can you imagine being a woman, sound asleep; and you look up and a man is standing over you covering your mouth?! I'm a young strong woman and that already is horrifying enough- now imagine being a fragile elderly woman who is already confused with Alzheimer's. Once we made it clear we wanted to move her out, the staff was bending over backwards to "make things work for us". Too little, too late . I consider this facility abusive and am so relieved that we moved my mother in law out. I could go on and on about the other bad, unprofessional things that happened here. read more

Despite these unprecedented times, Deborah Savoie and her staff made his transition into his new home and community a smooth and welcoming experience. I cannot say enough about The Point and the lovely, genuinely compassionate people who work here. They went way, WAY above and beyond to help my me and my Dad during a profound crisis that was initiated by a malfunctioning fire sprinkler and snowballed into a totally insane disaster (I could write a novel about it. And might). My Dad is not your average cat. He is an old Berkeley hippie with rough edges and not everyone's cup of tea. We were referred to The Point by Mona at Exceptional Senior Placement (please see my review - 5 stars!) and he was embraced by The Point's marketing director, Tyler, who has impressed me as a generally exceptional human being. At every step along the way I have been bowled over by The Point's compassion and willingness to help families in crisis. Tyler and the Executive Director, Kristen, worked with me patiently while I triaged legal matters, my dad's temporary homelessness, water damage repair work, oh and my own full time job and life on top of it. They were gracious, kind, generous, and really did me a huge solid, working with my Dad to find a unit that would be a good fit and accommodating our needs and limitations (including letting him bring his adored senior kitty cats). My Dad just moved in this week. After nearly 30 years of living in the City, he is finally back in his beloved East Bay and I'm hoping it will be a new lease on life for him. I can't tell you what a HUGE DEAL this is for him and what a relief it is for me. I'm really looking forward to visiting him there and updating my review on the facility itself. This is an update to an earlier review. I continue to be very happy with the Point for my 93 year old mother. My mom has been at the Point for almost three years and has recently had an acceleration in some of her symptoms of dementia due to a "brain bleed". The caretakers have been there for my mom, providing extra care when she needed it. The Point has gone out of their way to provide her the care she needs while keeping her costs manageable. It's actions like these that make the Point like a family. They really care about the well being of the residents. I see this over and over again when I watch how the Caretakers treat other residents. Last night, I took my mom to dinner in the dining hall but she was really reluctant to stay. I explained the situation to the chef and he immediately focused on my mom, giving her the kind of attention she needed to feel comfortable and happy, right through desert. It's actions like this that make the Point a remarkable place. As my mother becomes less able, I see that The Point provides well for residents with a range of needs. I consider it to be a tremendous advantage for her to be able to stay in the same environment as her needs become greater. At the same time, there is a whole new group of younger residents moving in who are contributing nicely to the community's diversity in age and background. My elderly cousin was moved to The Point when he developed dementia. Before deciding, I explored about 7 other options, and actually decided initially on a different place. Although I was quite impressed with The Point, I was dissuaded by several unfavorable reviews on Yelp that it tuns out were written several years ago. So when I found out that The Point is now under completely new management, I decided to take a chance. It was a truly great decision. I am extremely pleased and impressed with the quality of care given my cousin and the truly compassionate attitude of all the staff, from top to bottom. My parents both live at The Point. I was terrified when the first reports came out of massive COVID clusters at nursing homes. As the months have gone on, I've continued to hear stories of severe outbreaks at other facilities around the bay, and I have 2 friends with parents at other facilities that have contracted COVID, but--while there's always reason to be anxious during a pandemic--the excellent management at The Point has assuaged my fear considerably. They've done an excellent job of managing an impossible situation and keeping their residents safe. The staff are kind and helpful. The facility is comfortable and well-designed. My parents are much safer now than when they were living at home, and, because The Point has been so scrupulous about COVID safety, they're able to maintain a safe social life with other quarantined residents! They're enjoying themselves. I'm happy we decided on The Point. The staff are heroes, truly. read more

My husband has been at The Point for five years, during which the management changed several times. Deborah Savoie has made innumerable positive changes. Deborah's warmth and attentiveness set a high standard, and the staff she has assembled is excellent. I particularly appreciate the kind thoughtfulness so many staff members have shown as my husband's physical and mental health has gone steadily downhill. Having been a vociferous complainer for most of his stay, he now expresses gratitude for the friendly care that he receives. My daughters and I admire how Deborah and her staff have managed the Point during the pandemic, especially given the often bad news about Covid at residences for old people. My brother, who is a problematic individual, was taken in at The Point in Rockridge 2 years ago after a TBI. They made him very welcome in spite of his crabby attitude. He made good friends with many of the staff and they did everything they could to help him fit in and find a way to live there. Eventually he really turned his attitude around and he decided that he actually liked living there, all I believe because of the unending cheerfulness and patience of the staff. I really respect their solid systems for everyone's health and safety, and it is a pretty place, with many details that make it a nice place to visit. This is an update to my review of 7/2016. My mother has now been at The Point over 2 1/2 years and I stand by the 5 star review I wrote in 2016. Since then, my mother has moved to memory care at The Point. Memory care at The Point, called Generations, has it's own floor, director, med techs and care staff. It is a welcoming, homey and cozy place where residents with severe dementia are safe and coddled. In Generations, everyone feels like one big family and the staff has the opportunity to really, really know each resident - their likes, dislikes, moods, and special needs. I am still visiting my mother at least 3 times per week for a few hours at a time including lunch. It's actually fun there. I adore the caregivers. To a person they are warm and caring with our loved ones. The new Program director, Mary Ann, and the new Activities director, Jessica, are great additions to Generations. I trust them and the Generations staff completely. When the weather is nice, I picnic with my mother on the large patio. The birds-of-paradise are lovely. In the past year, the executive director, Deborah Savoie, has made The Point even better. She has a great team. A shout out to Fabio, the director of dining, who goes out of his way to provide residents with a delicious and customized dining experience. He makes residents and family members feel as though they are at a resort. This week, The Point invited family members and staff to attend a 6 hour seminar with Teepa Snow - an expert on every aspect of dementia and the challenging caregiving the condition requires. Teepa Snow was amazing. The 6 hours flew by. This was a fantastic perk and I learned so much. The Point is committed to the residents AND their families. They host several gatherings, holiday barbecues, happy hours, informational sessios and entertainment, not to mention the weekly over-the-top Sunday champagne brunches. The Point remains committed to their residents and family members on every level. What goes into the smooth running of a place like this is astounding - maintenance, housekeeping, concierge services, business services, dining, hydration, activities, medical and pharmaceutical needs - to name a few. My father moved to the Bay Area, and needed light support for things like cooking and medication management. The Point has been an excellent home for him for three years. The staff are attentive and consistently friendly. They call each resident by their name, and genuinely care. The Executive Director works tirelessly to see that staff and focused and engaged, and she works well with family members to ensure the right level of care for the seniors. In the aftermath of a stroke that posed ever-changing challenges in developing appropriate support, she was communicative, caring and kind. During the weeks of hospitalization I dropped by several times, and both staff and residents asked after him. The community of residents are a second blessing. What an engaged, kind, bright group they are. My dad enjoys his happy hour with a large group, and they sing and swap life stories while looking out at the Bay. I highly recommend The Point, and deeply appreciate the care they demonstrate. read more

This is a long overdue review for The Point Senior Living Residence in Oakland. I moved my mother here from FL just over a year ago; it was the best decision ever! All staff members are kind, supportive and compassionate to the residents...especially now during these challenging times of the Coronavirus. Although my mom, like everyone else at The Point, is now quarantined to her room, she still calls to tell me about the ongoing love she feels on a daily basis. I feel so fortunate knowing my mom is safe, well and happy thanks to the tireless efforts of the staff at The Point - from Custodial to Housekeeping to Dining Room Servers to the Front Office Staff to the Administration to Everybody- a HUGE thank you for all you're doing and please know it's immensely appreciated! read more

I see the positive reviews and am stunned. My dad has been here over two years and ahev seen the care go down steadily as another reviewer says-high, high staff turnover. I go there at last once a week and I sometimes don't see the same person twice! My father's clothes 'disappear' in the laundry that is one of the services I pay- and others-not his- sometime reappear, though I have yet to see any socks reappear so I bought him another pack. When it was Monarch it was much better. If your parent needs any kind of care or dietary restrictions this is not the place- after almost three years tonight they brought him sherbet (Yes it contains milk). Here are some of the things that I've experienced: My father had an 'accident' of diarrhea in his bed. The sheet was pulled up over it and left. I pay for him to get help dressing in the AM and PM so I know someone was in there that morning. I ordered a new mattress, checked in with three people including maintenance told them it was being delivered tomorrow as I was leaving town, could they unpack it from the box and set it up . They said no problem they would unbox it and put it on the bed for him. I returned 10 days later to find him still sleeping on the soiled mattress and the new one in the box next to his bed and feces still stained his carpet. On another occasion they sent him to the hospital in an ambulance with chest pains and never called me, not then, not when he was brought back- and I am there every week and have medical power of attorney and a DNR on file- so I guess I'm lucky he didn't die that night. I am in the process of looking for another place for him though I know this will be hard on him but I can't stand to see him so poorly treated. read more

I have been going to The Point since 2011 when it was called The Monarch. A close family friend moved here from LA after his wife passed away to live closer to his son. On Sundays the family brunch is quite a delight. Mimosas and omelets made to order as well as Italian and a great array of desserts! My grandpa, as I refer to him, was not much for going on the outings, but he did mention the friends he made and one female resident who was a not-so-secret admirer. His room was always clean and tidy. But the most important and best thing about this place is the staff. I always found them to be attentive during brunch and on his 92nd birthday they surprised him with a cake and sang to him. Sadly, my grandpa passed away last week and his funeral was in LA for him to be buried next to his wife. A celebration of his life was held at The Point for local family and friends including residents and staff. A couple residents said very genuine things that made me realize he developed true friendships and around 5 staff members shared very touching memories of working with him and cried with us. Their stories of him showed that they really listened to his stories and cared for him. I didn't really think that the staff would be so heartfelt seeing as there are many residents and they are probably busy, but they were and this brings me so much comfort knowing his last years were spent here. read more

My parents are new residents at The Point and it has been nothing but a wonderful experience for everyone. My mom has mild/moderate dementia and I was looking for a place that would keep her in the same apartment as my dad. The staff was very compassionate to and understanding of their situation and knew that keeping my parents together would be beneficial to both of them. Other places I looked at took a more institutionalized approach, but from the minute I walked through the door I could see the connection that the staff had with the residents. I felt respect, kindness, compassion and geniune interest from everyone there. There are quite a few mentions of staff turnover in the reviews, but it seems like many of the people that we have spoken to have been at the The Point for years. They always ask for feedback and have been very attentive to any needs or questions that have been raised. They have been very helpful with paperwork and making the transition as smooth and seamless as possible. Aside from my positive experience with the staff, my parents love it there and are so happy. They are exhausted at the end of each day from all of the activities and socializing they're doing! My mom's mood and condition is improving since she is exercising the social part of her brain (as opposed to sitting alone with my dad in their old condo all day). This was the best move we could have made. I am so relieved to know that my mom and dad have other people looking after them and making sure they are well. The residents and staff are so warm and happy - it brings me comfort to know my parents are safe and well there. And most of all, my parents love it too. read more

Watch your $$. A family friend was a resident here and his companion became close to Alec DeJesus the Dining Room Supervisor. After our friends death Alec continued the relationship with the companion. During this process Alec convinced the companion to give him a car and over $100,000. We reported this to the Point but they decided no rules were broken and Alec remains working at the Point. The companion was 79 years old when he began asking and taking the money. read more

It is now @ 2.5 years since we initially brought my mother to live at the Point at Rockridge, in Generations, the memory care unit on the second floor. During the time she was there, she was humiliated, condescended to, lied to, made fun of, stolen from, gaslighted, ignored, ordered around, made to feel she was "crazy" and treated with contempt by various, ever-changing, underpaid, overworked caregivers who, aside from a brief class before they start on the floor, are uneducated about memory care. Her nice sheets and towels, which I believe went home with someone working there, were replaced with cheap ones, but only after I made a big deal about it. Every time I visited my mother, her room was dirty. On one visit (I live out of state), she had a large sore on her shin that any caregiver bathing her would have seen, and raw sores between two toes, where they rubbed together. She was dehydrated. Her clothing disappeared and a pair of orthopedic shoes that were not hers appeared in her closet. The caregivers stored stained, threadbare sheets that were not hers in a pile in her closet. (Her next door neighbor's closet shelves were stuffed with them. I talked with and visited with this lady as much as I could whenever I visited because she only seemed to get visitors on Sunday for religious purposes. She seemed terribly depressed all the time. She was able to verbalize and told me that the caregivers were disrespectful and that she was always "in trouble". The first time I met her, she was sitting dispiritedly in a group in the "recreation" room and I noticed that her knee brace had slid all the way down her leg. There were at least three caregivers in the room at the time, sitting in a group away from the residents, not paying any attention to them, checking their phones and talking amongst themselves. I adjusted it for her and talked to her for awhile. One evening, I heard a caregiver yelling at her after she had blocked her toilet and caused it to overflow which, apparently, she did often, probably as an act of protest. I once found her in a chair at the end of her hallway, completely slumped over the side of it, with her head, torso and arms dangling down. I ran to her and helped her sit up. She said she was alright and I took her into her room. She was not alright, though. She was extremely unhappy.) After my mother started trying to escape the facility, I wrote a letter to the facility director, Kirsten, about all of these things and received a hostile response, denying everything, suggesting that I thought I could run the facility better than she could, and threatening to add extra charges to my mother's care because my mother's cat, Leona, who was had been allowed to come with her but who they refused to look after, would throw up on the carpet in my mother's room. There were, thank heavens, always a few caregivers who truly loved and cared for the residents but they were not the majority, by far, and they were always leaving, too. When my mother arrived, the unit was new and there were only about a dozen residents. I can't imagine what the Generations Director was having to do, sitting in her office all day, barely able to step out to check on the residents and have a meal. She was kind and highly overworked. She was replaced by another director who was very good but who, like the first one, would hardly ever return my phone calls. My mother's spirits improved markedly under this woman's directorship. When she died unexpectedly, she was replaced by a director who, I believe, is cut out of the same cloth as Kirsten. My mother's spirits plunged. The more stressed she is, the more difficult it is for her to express herself verbally and she begins acting out physically. After one of the caregivers couldn't get her to calm down one night, she called 9-1-1, my mother was strapped to a gurney and taken to Kaiser in Oakland, where she was heavily sedated, kept overnight and sent home the next morning. People who are educated in memory care do not call 9-1-1 when a resident becomes agitated. Once back in Generations, still under the influence of the drugs, my mother was not looked after and fell onto her forehead, causing a huge contusion. For the second time in less than 24 hours, she was put into an ambulance and taken to a hospital. When she returned, she was given an untrained 24-hour a day attendant from some agency, who was so terrible that she was fired immediately. The second one complained to me that it took my mother forever to do anything and I heard her order my mother around, over the phone. I complained to the Generations Director, after which she was let go and no one replaced her. My mother was so stressed and frustrated by then that she began lashing out at people who were not the causes of it. She was accused of abusing her cat, which I know did not happen, the cat was kicked out and, a couple of days later, my mother was kicked out. Generations is a sham. Do not put anyone you love there. read more

I'm very happy with the care my mother received at the Point. The staff were outstanding and considerate. Nursing director Amy Lund is outstanding, and there are so many caregivers on staff who really do care. My mom was in a comparable facility in LA that was not nearly as well run, and that gave me great appreciation for the Point. The staff treats the residents as you would want your family to be treated, with love, respect and integrity. read more

My uncle moved into the Point a few months before turning 100 when he was still ambulatory and sometimes a bit of a trouble-maker. The staff was most attentive in helping him while respecting his desire to be independent as long as possible. With their excellent care he was able to enjoy the last seven months of his life, eat great meals whenever he wanted, socialize with other residents and visitors, and know that there were friendly, supportive people to assist him when he needed help. After living alone for most of his adult life, he easily adjusted to being in a community and was able to die peacefully in his own bed. Since I live on the East Coast, I was greatly relieved that he was well-taken care of at the Point. read more

Mixed experience. Both parents live here. Under new management and now called the Point at Rockridge. High turnover of employees, especially those involved in running activities and preparing meals, in the name of saving money. Some activities are now run by one woman who speaks to seniors as if they were retarded, when the attendees are smarter than she is. Some laundry machines broken. Some food is unhealthy- one day I was there, lunch was pepperoni pizza followed by very fatty spare ribs (50% fat). There is not much in the way of healthy fruit and vegetables, one exception being the slices of oranges in the salad bar, which are superb. Valet parking has been eliminated as too expensive and it is not so easy to park in the basement garage, so this is a shame. The transportation has been a problem- there is ONE town car and ONE van, often ONE driver on duty so only one vehicle is available.This is insufficient for the needs of the residents and often rides are not available. One driver recently was relocated to a desk job when it was discovered she was driving the van on an expired driver's license. There was an outbreak of a GI infection last year (when it was under different management still, as Monarch), and all activities were cancelled for a month. PROS- very nice residents, occasionally a meal is good and there are options off the standard menu when the daily offering is bad, there is a good brain- exercise class offered now. The apartments are a nice size with good sunlight and there is an on-site hand yman to fix things. Weekly housecleaning does a good job. Outings to Oakland As and San Francisco Symphony are fantastic. read more
