I am rarely this impressed by steak quality outside of the US. And the wine list! Orin Swift (the famous maker of Papillon), Stag's Leap, and lots of lesser known but still excellent brands from around the world. This is going to be my first stop next time I'm in York. My only comment -- but maybe this is just from an American used to farm-to-table food -- is that just like everywhere else in England, I wish there were fewer fried things and more vegetables on the menu (although the tomato side salad was amazing). Onto the other staff, waiters and waitresses etc, very impressed, well dressed, very polite, tentative, good vibe overall and we were looked after. The food, actually really nice, steak was massive and cooked to perfection. Large portions, exactly what we expected from a steakhouse. Veg was cooked well however the cauliflower cheese should be advertised as "cauliflower with cheese on top" as the cheese sauce was merely drizzled over the top of boiled cauliflower. But I would say we were (4 of us) all very happy with our food. Front of house lady didn't spoil our night (I suspect it was she who took my reservation phone call too) though it would have been a lot nicer if she met the same standards as the rest of her crew and food.
