After FOUR ugly years of feeling bullied and enduring repeated threats of partition action through probate, we were finally allowed to buy out my deceased sister-in-law's portion of our family-owned rental properties last year. My sister-in-law's widower was administrator for her estate, and he was represented by Robert Cohen. The first whiff of trouble was when Cohen chastised my husband for not keeping his living sister (also a co-owner) updated on details of the probate case. My husband had no such responsibility to administer on behalf of the probate estate. That task sat solely on the shoulders of the administrator and his attorney. Brother-in-law has always been a huge procrastinator, and apparently Cohen wanted to pawn the responsibility off on someone else. This was when it became apparent, we needed to hire our own attorney for protection and boy did we ever need our own attorney! In the beginning, we were forced to sell the first three properties. Then, we initially agreed to sell the rest of the rental properties. They repeatedly demanded some sort of "agreement" to financially penalize ourselves if we somehow jeopardized the sale of the properties. Because we were on a strict timeline trying to make a 1031 exchange happen (to buy them out of one apartment building at a pre-agreed upon price) we repeatedly submitted drafts of this vague demand, but it seemed it was never quite harsh enough for them. It felt like they intentionally ran the clock out on our 1031 exchange, and we had to eat those capital gains taxes. That said, having it drag on & on for so long, we were able to save enough money to buy out the 1/3 portion of all properties held up in probate. That is the only good thing that came out of this ugly experience. Not having to sell our family business after all. After all we were subjected to, my opinion, in a nutshell, is that I have never had such a toxic experience with an attorney in my life, and I say this with years of legal secretary experience under my belt. It was such a relief when we closed escrow, knowing we were finally rid of these two individuals. I will acknowledge that the brother-in-law seemed to be trying to take revenge on my husband, so it is likely he directed Cohen to be ugly with us. There was a family disagreement over one property that my father-in-law left (through the hands of my mother-in-law) solely to my husband. This was my MIL & FIL's way of compensating my husband for the early years where he ran the rental properties (he's run the properties for 45+ years now) being paid a pittance due to the sisters needing money because of divorces, lost jobs, etc. It did seem that any time a mistake was made in Cohen's office, he threw a family member under the bus. I fully expect that type of response to my review in 3...2...1... I definitely, very highly, recommend Robert, The Probate Guy! He just completed 2 concurrent rather messy probates for us & I'm very, VERY pleased with the results. I'm in NC, the estates were in CA, my sister & I were co-executors (I do not recommend assigning siblings as co-executors...read on). I was able to sign most documents online and a few through the mail. It was a smooth but very long process (you can't rush the courts & we started in 2020 so Covid had slowed the courts even more). Patience is imperative during probate, even during "normal" times. So, Robert was my sister's choice, and in the beginning, Robert rubbed me the wrong way. I did not want to deal with an insensitive pushy attorney AND my unreasonable, argumentative, co-executor sister through 2 lengthy probates, with good reasons - my brother, 2 years younger than I, just died (I had to make the call to end life support) and I was also caring for my partner who was on hospice/cancer (he died 2.5 months after my bro). I had neither the time (my partner needed and deserved my full attention) nor the emotional fortitude to fight my sister about which attorney to use so I gave in. And, lol, 3 days after my partner died, less than 3 months after we hired Robert, I get a call from a lady who says my sister hired her as a liaison because now she didn't like Robert and wanted yet another attorney. Sigh. I said F no, she can do what she wants but I'm sticking with Robert. He was doing all the right things so why would I want to go through more BS with my sis 3 days after my partner of 21+ years died?? You know when you fire an attorney during probate, you then legally owe that attorney for all the hours they've logged and other monies they've spent on your case up to that point, and Robert had already put a lot of hours in, plus I had already had to pay off (4K+) the first attorney that my sister decided she didn't like. Total surreal absurdities. And I just did not want any more unhinged arguing which I despise. Eventually, because Robert always riled me up on the phone, I corresponded with him only via email; if I called I only talked with Matthew or their accountant. That worked V well for me. So, I will probably not take Robert to lunch when I go to California, hahaha! BUT, he greatly exceeded my expectations (our final inheritances were a bit more than I had expected), and I would definitely hire him again if I needed to probate again! Remember, if you create a will or a trust, choose 1 executor and a backup, but do not make 2 people, especially siblings, co-executors. read more

After the difficulty coordinating plans and working with a mortuary totally overwhelmed from covid we were left with a new daunting task... his messy and confusing estate. My experience with Robert and his colleagues have been nothing less than great! When my mother passed I was stressed and flustered thinking about the time commitment and process of handling her affairs including the cleaning out and selling of her home. Since her and I did not live in the same city it complicated things more so. Robert told me not to worry, he has working relationships with professionals that aid in every avenue of this process, that really help to make MY stress minimal. He recommended a realtor, accountant, financial advisor, etc... for me it was a one stop spot and I didn't have to call around or pay out of pocket for advice. Additionally, my mother's home was a mess and in need of deep cleaning and repairs. As much as a stressed about cleaning and decluttering her home to get it ready for sell Robert kept insisting it was okay, don't worry about it. Sure enough the realtor had a contractor that finished cleaning/trash disposal, handled repairs, replaced carpeting, etc... I really didn't have to worry. And the house sold in less than 3 weeks on the market! I chose him based on his Google Reviews and Yelp, and I was not disappointed. He is the penultimate professional. He answered all my questions. He knows all the in's and out's of the law. I wrote him emails at 10:00PM on a Saturday night and he would reply at 10:01PM on the same night. The guy never sleeps. It's because he left out what was supposed to go to the city. He left that out altogether! Apparently his math skills are that of a second grader! DO NOT USE THIS GUY! Mr. Cohen, I'd like to know what "back door deal" you did with my "father" Paul N as relatives and another attny had proclaimed. My sister may have convinced him to take me out of his will....but I still have to ask, what deal did you do with Paul N and Steven N of Satellite Beach Florida? Earlier, I gave you a positive review since you asked me to....even if you didn't "answer all" my questions like you protested. You never responded after I'd asked when his brother Dr. Ricky N died. To be fair, I did send you and another attorney about my issues with some of these critters who I believe may have even tampered with my parents meds, etc. But I don't think I will ever know. I've already gone through a few attempts to get them to at least know that I suspect them. I understand our "father" was on his way out due to stage 4. But I've grown up with one of them and their issues with abuse, theft, and even more sociopathy. After my dad past away, he's been working on my family's estate for the past 6+ months. There has been no proper communication. It takes him days to respond back. After a devastating tragedy in our family, we needed someone to help us through the probate process. I am not easy at trusting someone else to handle our family affairs. I tend to ask a ton of questions to ensure that we all completely understand what is happening, what the impacts are, and make sure we all know the expectations (sometimes I can be difficult to deal with..LOL). After the probate was closed, months later, we received an incorrect tax bill which Robert was able to quickly have resolved due to the taxing authority error.
